La critica immanente delle forme di vita: una teleologia emancipatoria anti-essenzialista
This paper focuses on the relation between Rahel Jaeggi’s theory of the Forms
of Life and Hegel’s notion of Ethical Life, as it appears in Hegel’s Philosophy of Right. he
paper begins by highlighting the scission between right and good, which is typical of liberal
approaches to the moral right and excludes the ethical good from the philosophical
debate. I emphasize how such distinction leads to a neutral attitude towards the good,
which is seen as something pertaining only to individual choices. Starting from this scission,
I will analyse Jaeggi’s attempt to bring the ethical dimension of a form of life back
to the center of the philosophical debate, by recovering the traditional emancipatory
approach of the Critical heory and developing it through Hegel’s theory of Objective
Spirit – in particular, thanks to the notion of Ethical Life. I will pay particular attention
to the method of immanent critique adopted by Jaeggi. By exploring its negative aspects
and its transformative ability, I will systematically stress the connection to Hegel. he
negativity of the immanent critique, typical of Jaeggi’s method, will be explained as
process of self-determination and self-realisation – to be understood as a historical-cultural
and not as an essentialist. At the same time, the immanence of the normativity
will emerge as what all enables the dialectic between the individual and the community
Computer-Aided Conceptual Design Through TRIZ-based Manipulation of Topological Optimizations
Organised by: Cranfield UniversityIn a recent project the authors proposed the adoption of Optimization Systems [1] as a bridging element
between Computer-Aided Innovation (CAI) and PLM to identify geometrical contradictions [2], a particular
case of the TRIZ physical contradiction [3].
A further development of the research has revealed that the solutions obtained from several topological
optimizations can be considered as elementary customized modeling features for a specific design task. The
topology overcoming the arising geometrical contradiction can be obtained through a manipulation of the
density distributions constituting the conflicting pair. Already two strategies of density combination have been
identified as capable to solve geometrical contradictions.Mori Seiki – The Machine Tool Compan
Performance evaluation in research departments: from the Balanced Scorecard to the Strategy Map
Notwithstanding a growing interest towards performance management systems for universities, little is known on their application to academic departments. Being an institution dedicated to research, a department presents specific characteristics: creativity, professional autonomy, low degree of repetitiveness, uncertainty on results, unclear relation between input and output. Such peculiarities make the evaluation and measurement of its performance particularly difficult. The purpose of the paper is the exploration and development of a performance evaluation approach which is suitable for the particular features of an academic department. As this paper is explorative in nature, we use a qualitative methodology, to identify dimensions of performance evaluation suitable for application to an academic department. Data are collected for the case study of a department of the University of Padua, Italy. After identifying the relations between the four perspective of the balanced scorecard and identifying the strategic maps, the case study proposes a set of goals and measures which are suitable to satisfy the managerial needs of the analyzed department. The paper contributes to the performance evaluation literature in three main ways. It extends the concept of customer by considering a wider systems of stakeholders; it emphasize the strategic role of the financial dimension as a driver for achieving the mission and it highlights the need to coordinate the different stakeholders involved in the enhancement of strategy, from academic and administrative staff, to different types of customers and the community in general.performance measurement, strategy map, balanced scorecard, university, departments

IDEALIST control and service management solutions for dynamic and adaptive flexi-grid DWDM networks
Wavelength Switched Optical Networks (WSON) were designed with the premise that all channels in a network have the same spectrum needs, based on the ITU-T DWDM grid. However, this rigid grid-based approach is not adapted to the spectrum requirements of the signals that are best candidates for long-reach transmission and high-speed data rates of 400Gbps and beyond. An innovative approach is to evolve the fixed DWDM grid to a flexible grid, in which the optical spectrum is partitioned into fixed-sized spectrum slices. This allows facilitating the required amount of optical bandwidth and spectrum for an elastic optical connection to be dynamically and adaptively allocated by assigning the necessary number of slices of spectrum. The ICT IDEALIST project will provide the architectural design, protocol specification, implementation, evaluation and standardization of a control plane and a network and service management system. This architecture and tools are necessary to introduce dynamicity, elasticity and adaptation in flexi-grid DWDM networks. This paper provides an overview of the objectives, framework, functional requirements and use cases of the elastic control plane and the adaptive network and service management system targeted in the ICT IDEALIST project
