Structure and ionic conductivity in lithium garnets
Garnets are capable of accommodating an excess of lithium cations beyond that normally found in this prototypical structure. This excess lithium is found in a mixture of coordination environments with considerable positional and occupational disorder and leads to ionic conductivity of up to 4×10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature. This high value for total conductivity, combined with excellent thermal and (electro)chemical resistance makes these candidate materials for operation in all solid-state batteries. This review looks at garnets with a wide range of stoichiometries and lithium concentrations and the impact of complex lithium distributions and crystallographic order/disorder transitions on the transport properties of these materials
Structural and magnetic study of order−disorder behavior in the double perovskites Ba2Nd1−xMnxMoO6
The synthesis and structural and magnetic characterization of the site-ordered double perovskites, Ba2Nd1−xMnxMoO6, 0 0.3, no deviation from the ideal cubic Fm3̅m symmetry is observed. Furthermore, dc-susceptibility measurements confirm that Mn2+ is being doped onto the Nd3+ site, and the associated oxidation of Mo5+ to Mo6+. For all compositions, the Curie−Weiss paramagnetic behavior above 150 K indicates negative Weiss constants that range from −24(2) and −85(2) K. This net antiferromagnetic interaction is weakest when x ≈ 0.5, where the disorder in cation site occupancy and competition with ferromagnetic interactions is the greatest. Despite these strong antiferromagnetic interactions, there is no evidence in the dc-susceptibility of a bulk cancellation of spins for x > 0.05. Low-temperature neutron diffraction measurements indicate that there is no long-range magnetic order for 0.1 ≤ x < 0.9. Ba2Nd0.10Mn0.90MoO6 exhibits additional Bragg scattering at 2 K, indicative of long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Mn2+ cations, with a propagation vector k = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The scattering intensities can be modeled using a noncollinear magnetic structure with the Mnthe Mn2+ moments orientated antiferromagnetically along the four different 111 directions
ACT Family Violence Intervention Program review
This paper reports on a review of the Australian Capital Territory’s Family Violence Intervention Program, which provides an interagency response to family violence matters.
The scope of the review was to analyse the program’s activities and outcomes using 2007–08 data provided by participating agencies, supported by in-depth interviews with key stakeholders including victims whose matters had been finalised in court. After the completion of this report, additional data from 2008–09 and 2009–10 was made available by some Family Violence Intervention Program (FVIP) participating agencies. Although not within the scope of this evaluation, these data pointed to some preliminary improvements in the FVIP
Domestic family homicide in Australia
Updates Mouzos and Rushforth’s (2003) findings describing characteristics of domestic/family homicides in Australia from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2012.
Introduction
In 2003, the Australian Institute of Criminology published a report that drew attention to the characteristics of domestic/family homicide based on the differing family relationships between victims and offenders (Mouzos & Rushforth 2003).
This report presents data for the period 1 July 2002 through 30 June 2012 and provides an update to Mouzos and Rushforth (2003) and supplementary data to that disseminated in the Australian Institute of Criminology’s latest National Homicide Monitoring Program report covering the years 2010– 12
New compounds and structures in the solid state
This chapter reviews the 2008 literature on new compounds and structures in the solid state
Same-sex intimate partner homicide in Australia
This study uses data from the National Homicide Monitoring Program within a context of national and international research to describe what is known about the trends and key characteristics of same-sex intimate partner homicide in Australia.
Foreword
While there is a sizable body of research on intimate partner homicide in general, there has been limited focus on intimate partner homicide involving people in same-sex relationships.
The present study, one of the first of its kind, uses data from the National Homicide Monitoring Program (NHMP) within a context of national and international research to describe what is known about the trends and key characteristics of same-sex intimate partner homicide in Australia.
An analysis is provided of the similarities and differences between same-sex and opposite-sex intimate partner homicide incidents, including identification of some of the factors associated with these incidents.
Consideration is also given to the role of sexual discrimination and marginalisation in same-sex intimate partner homicide
Irish Households, Assessing the Impact of the Economic Crisis
The impact of the changing economic environment on Irish households has been significant, with net worth falling 30 per cent since 2006. This article uses Quarterly Financial Accounts data to investigate how they have adjusted to the vastly different economic climate with which they are now faced. It finds that households’ portfolio composition has shifted considerably, due largely to falling asset values. Results also suggest that households are now entering a long period of debt reduction. The consequence of deleveraging is a reduction in household consumption; a process that cannot proceed without an increase in the household savings rate. In the wake of the economic slowdown, there is a risk that increased savings could be a drag on consumption and bank lending in the future, with negative implications for the speed of economic recovery.
The Rise and Fall of Sectoral Net Wealth in Ireland
This article is about the loss in wealth precipitated by the latest financial crisis and economic recession has been substantial.
