Generalized Results on Monoids as Memory
We show that some results from the theory of group automata and monoid
automata still hold for more general classes of monoids and models. Extending
previous work for finite automata over commutative groups, we demonstrate a
context-free language that can not be recognized by any rational monoid
automaton over a finitely generated permutable monoid. We show that the class
of languages recognized by rational monoid automata over finitely generated
completely simple or completely 0-simple permutable monoids is a semi-linear
full trio. Furthermore, we investigate valence pushdown automata, and prove
that they are only as powerful as (finite) valence automata. We observe that
certain results proven for monoid automata can be easily lifted to the case of

Human tularemia in Italy. Is it a re-emerging disease?
In order to evaluate whether tularemia is re-emerging in Italy, data on mortality and morbidity (obtained by the National Institute of Statistics; ISTAT), Italian cases described in the scientific literature and data concerning hospitalizations for tularemia (obtained by the National Hospital Discharge Database) were analysed. From 1979 to 2010, ISTAT reported 474 cases and no deaths. The overall number of cases obtained from the literature review was at least 31% higher than that reported by ISTAT. Moreover, the number of cases reported by ISTAT was 3·5 times smaller than hospitalized cases. The real frequency of the disease should be carefully investigated and taken into account in order to implement specific prevention measures.Tularemia is a contagious infectious disease due to Francisiella tularensis that can cause serious clinical manifestations and significant mortality if untreated. Although the frequency and significance of the disease has diminished over the last decades in Central Europe, over the past few years, there is new evidence suggesting that tularemia has re-emerged worldwide. A General Framework for Recursive Decompositions of Unitary Quantum Evolutions
Decompositions of the unitary group U(n) are useful tools in quantum
information theory as they allow one to decompose unitary evolutions into local
evolutions and evolutions causing entanglement. Several recursive
decompositions have been proposed in the literature to express unitary
operators as products of simple operators with properties relevant in
entanglement dynamics. In this paper, using the concept of grading of a Lie
algebra, we cast these decompositions in a unifying scheme and show how new
recursive decompositions can be obtained. In particular, we propose a new
recursive decomposition of the unitary operator on qubits, and we give a

Confining properties of 2-color QCD at finite density
We study the confining properties of QCD with two colors across the finite
density phase transition. A disorder parameter detecting dual superconductivity
of the QCD vacuum is used as a probe for the confinement/deconfinement phase

Multichannel operation of an integrated acousto-optic wavelength routing switch for WDM systems
Polarization independent acousto-optic tunable filters (PIAOTF's) can operate as transparent wavelength-selective crossconnects to route signals in wavelength division multiplexed optical networks. In this paper, a new low power PIAOTF is characterized as a switch in multiwavelength operation, using four equally spaced lightwave signals with wavelengths between 1546 nm and 1558 nm. Interchannel interference due to sidelobe excitation is lower than -11 dB for single wavelength switching and is equal to -6 dB in the extreme case of simultaneous switching of all wavelength channels. Sources of interport and interchannel crosstalk for single and multiple wavelength switching are identified
On the phase diagram of the Higgs SU(2) model
The Higgs SU(2) model with fixed Higgs length is usually believed to have two
different phases at high gauge coupling (\beta), separated by a line of first
order transitions but not distinuguished by any typical symmetry associated
with a local order parameter, as first proved by Fradkin and Shenker. We show
that in regions of the parameter space where it is usually supposed to be a

Observations of microglitches in HartRAO radio pulsars
A detailed observation of microglitch phenomenon in relatively slow radio
pulsars is presented. Our analyses for these small amplitude jumps in pulse
rotation frequency () and/or spin down rate () combine the
traditional manual detection method (which hinges on careful visual inspections
of the residuals of pulse phase residuals) and a new, and perhaps more
objective, automated search technique (which exploits the power of the
computer, rather than the eyes, for resolving discrete events in pulsar spin
parameters). The results of the analyses of a sample of 26 radio pulsars reveal
that: (i) only 20 pulsars exhibit significant fluctuations in their arrival
times to be considered suitable for meaningful microglitch analyses; (ii) a
phenomenal 299 microglitch events were identified in and/or :
266 of these events were found to be simultaneously significant in and
, while 19 and 14 were noticeable only in and ,
respectively; (iii) irrespective of sign, the microglitches have fractional
sizes which cover about 3 orders of magnitude in and
( and ) with median values as

Spatial and temporal hot spots of Aedes albopictus abundance inside and outside a South European metropolitan area
Aedes albopictus is a tropical invasive species which in the last decades spread worldwide,
also colonizing temperate regions of Europe and US, where it has become a public health
concern due to its ability to transmit exotic arboviruses, as well as severe nuisance problems
due to its aggressive daytime outdoor biting behaviour. While several studies have
been carried out in order to predict the potential limits of the species expansions based on
eco-climatic parameters, few studies have so far focused on the specific effects of these
variables in shaping its micro-geographic abundance and dynamics. The present study
investigated eco-climatic factors affecting Ae. albopictus abundance and dynamics in metropolitan
and sub-urban/rural sites in Rome (Italy), which was colonized in 1997 and is nowadays
one of the most infested metropolitan areas in Southern Europe. To this aim,
longitudinal adult monitoring was carried out along a 70 km-transect across and beyond the
most urbanized and densely populated metropolitan area. Two fine scale spatiotemporal
datasets (one with reference to a 20m circular buffer around sticky traps used to collect
mosquitoes and the second to a 300m circular buffer within each sampling site) were
exploited to analyze the effect of climatic and socio-environmental variables on Ae. albopictus
abundance and dynamics along the transect. Results showed an association between
highly anthropized habitats and high adult abundance both in metropolitan and sub-urban/
rural areas, with “small green islands” corresponding to hot spots of abundance in the metropolitan
areas only, and a bimodal seasonal dynamics with a second peak of abundance in
autumn, due to heavy rains occurring in the preceding weeks in association with permissive
temperatures. The results provide useful indications to prioritize public mosquito control
measures in temperate urban areas where nuisance, human-mosquito contact and risk of
local arbovirus transmission are likely higher, and highlight potential public health risks also
after the summer months typically associated with high mosquito densities
