    A General Framework for Recursive Decompositions of Unitary Quantum Evolutions

    Decompositions of the unitary group U(n) are useful tools in quantum information theory as they allow one to decompose unitary evolutions into local evolutions and evolutions causing entanglement. Several recursive decompositions have been proposed in the literature to express unitary operators as products of simple operators with properties relevant in entanglement dynamics. In this paper, using the concept of grading of a Lie algebra, we cast these decompositions in a unifying scheme and show how new recursive decompositions can be obtained. In particular, we propose a new recursive decomposition of the unitary operator on NN qubits, and we give a numerical example.Comment: 17 pages. To appear in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.     Multiscale models of colloidal dispersion of particles in nematic liquid crystals

    We use homogenization theory to develop a multiscale model of colloidal dispersion of particles in nematic liquid crystals under weak-anchoring conditions. We validate the model by comparing it with simulations by using the Landau–de Gennes free energy and show that the agreement is excellent. We then use the multiscale model to study the effect that particle anisotropy has on the liquid crystal: spherically symmetric particles always reduce the effective elastic constant. Asymmetric particles introduce an effective alignment field that can increase the Fredericks threshold and decrease the switch-off time

    In a highland province of Burundi, indoor residual spraying and long-lasting insecticidal net distribution were targeted in the valley, aiming also to protect the population living on the hilltops. The impact on malaria indicators was assessed, and the potential additional effect of nets evaluated. After the intervention--and compared with the control valleys--children 1-9 years old in the treated valleys had lower risks of malaria infection (odds ratio, OR: 0.55), high parasite density (OR: 0.48), and clinical malaria (OR: 0.57). The impact on malaria prevalence was even higher in infants (OR: 0.14). Using nets did not confer an additional protective effect to spraying. Targeted vector control had a major impact on malaria in the high-risk valleys but not in the less-exposed hilltops. Investment in targeted and regular control measures associated with effective case management should be able to control malaria in the highlands

    The additional-mode garden of RR Lyrae stars

    Space-based photometric missions revealed a surprising abundance of millimagnitude-level additional modes in RR Lyrae stars. The modes that appear in the modulated fundamental-mode (RRab) stars can be ordered into four major categories.     PIXE and ToF-SIMS analysis of streaker samplers filters

    This paper presents methodological innovations introduced in the characterisation of urban aerosol collected in Italy in a recent campaign. Two complementary ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques were used to analyse Nuclepore filters used in continuous streaker samplers to collect airborne particles in four Italian towns. Na to Pb elemental concentrations were obtained by particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE), while time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) produced, on the same samples, time trends for several elements and molecular fragments. In addition, light attenuation measurements were used as a tracer for black carbon. The data produced by these three techniques was merged into a unique data set to address the characterisation of particulate matter sources. Correlations between elemental concentration trends (PIXE) and relative trends for molecular fragments (ToF-SIMS) and black carbon (light attenuation) have been studied by cluster and principal component analysis

    Short report: molecular markers associated with Plasmodium falciparum resistance to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is the first line antimalarial treatment in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Using polymerase chain reaction, we assessed the prevalence of mutations in the dihydrofolate reductase (dhfr) (codons 108, 51, 59) and dihydropteroate synthase (dhps) (codons 437, 540) genes of Plasmodium falciparum, which have been associated with resistance to pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine, respectively. Four hundred seventy-four patients were sampled in Kilwa (N = 138), Kisangani (N = 112), Boende (N = 106), and Basankusu (N = 118). The proportion of triple mutations dhfr varied between sites but was always > 50%. The proportion of dhps double mutations was < 20%, with some sites as low as 0.9%. A quintuple mutation was present in 12.8% (16/125) samples in Kilwa; 11.9% (13/109) in Kisangani, 2.9% (3/102) in Boende, and 0.9% (1/112) in Basankusu. These results suggest high resistance to pyrimethamine alone or combined with sulfadoxine. Adding artesunate to SP does not seem a valid alternative to the current monotherapy

    Impact of positivity and complete positivity on accessibility of Markovian dynamics

    We consider a two-dimensional quantum control system evolving under an entropy-increasing irreversible dynamics in the semigroup form. Considering a phenomenological approach to the dynamics, we show that the accessibility property of the system depends on whether its evolution is assumed to be positive or completely positive. In particular, we characterize the family of maps having different accessibility and show the impact of that property on observable quantities by means of a simple physical model.Comment: 11 pages, to appear in J.     Kinetic Inductance Detectors for the OLIMPO experiment: design and pre-flight characterization

    We designed, fabricated, and characterized four arrays of horn--coupled, lumped element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs), optimized to work in the spectral bands of the balloon-borne OLIMPO experiment. OLIMPO is a 2.6 m aperture telescope, aimed at spectroscopic measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. OLIMPO will also validate the LEKID technology in a representative space environment. The corrected focal plane is filled with diffraction limited horn-coupled KID arrays, with 19, 37, 23, 41 active pixels respectively at 150, 250, 350, and 460\:GHz. Here we report on the full electrical and optical characterization performed on these detector arrays before the flight. In a dark laboratory cryostat, we measured the resonator electrical parameters, such as the quality factors and the electrical responsivities, at a base temperature of 300\:mK. The measured average resonator QQs are 1.7×104\times{10^4}, 7.0×104\times{10^4}, 1.0×104\times{10^4}, and 1.0×104\times{10^4} for the 150, 250, 350, and 460\:GHz arrays, respectively. The average electrical phase responsivities on resonance are 1.4\:rad/pW, 1.5\:rad/pW, 2.1\:rad/pW, and 2.1\:rad/pW; the electrical noise equivalent powers are 45aW/Hz\:\rm{aW/\sqrt{Hz}}, 160aW/Hz\:\rm{aW/\sqrt{Hz}}, 80aW/Hz\:\rm{aW/\sqrt{Hz}}, and 140aW/Hz\:\rm{aW/\sqrt{Hz}}, at 12 Hz. In the OLIMPO cryostat, we measured the optical properties, such as the noise equivalent temperatures (NET) and the spectral responses. The measured NETRJ_{\rm RJ}s are 200μKs200\:\mu\rm{K\sqrt{s}}, 240μKs240\:\mu\rm{K\sqrt{s}}, 240μKs240\:\mu\rm{K\sqrt{s}}, and 340μKs\:340\mu\rm{K\sqrt{s}}, at 12 Hz; under 78, 88, 92, and 90 mK Rayleigh-Jeans blackbody load changes respectively for the 150, 250, 350, and 460 GHz arrays. The spectral responses were characterized with the OLIMPO differential Fourier transform spectrometer (DFTS) up to THz frequencies, with a resolution of 1.8 GHz.Comment: Published on JCA
