Statistical Properties of Turbulence: An Overview
We present an introductory overview of several challenging problems in the
statistical characterisation of turbulence. We provide examples from fluid
turbulence in three and two dimensions, from the turbulent advection of passive
scalars, turbulence in the one-dimensional Burgers equation, and fluid

A multicomponent intervention for the management of chronic pain in older adults: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
Background: Studies have shown that physical interventions and psychological methods based on the cognitive behavioral approach are efficacious in alleviating pain and that combining both tends to yield more benefits than either intervention alone. In view of the aging population with chronic pain and the lack of evidence-based pain management programs locally, we developed a multicomponent intervention incorporating physical exercise and cognitive behavioral techniques and examined its long-term effects against treatment as usual (i.e., pain education) in older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain in Hong Kong. Methods/design: We are conducting a double-blind, cluster-randomized controlled trial. A sample of 160 participants aged ≥ 60 years will be recruited from social centers or outpatient clinics and will be randomized on the basis of center/clinic to either the multicomponent intervention or the pain education program. Both interventions consist of ten weekly sessions of 90 minutes each. The primary outcome is pain intensity, and the secondary outcomes include pain interference, pain persistence, pain self-efficacy, pain coping, pain catastrophizing cognitions, health-related quality of life, depressive symptoms, and hip and knee muscle strength. All outcome measures will be collected at baseline, postintervention, and at 3 and 6 months follow-up. Intention-to-treat analysis will be performed using mixed-effects regression to see whether the multicomponent intervention alleviates pain intensity and associated outcomes over and above the effects of pain education (i.e., a treatment × time intervention effect). Discussion: Because the activities included in the multicomponent intervention were carefully selected for ready implementation by allied health professionals in general, the results of this study, if positive, will make available an efficacious, nonpharmacological pain management program that can be widely adopted in clinical and social service settings and will hence improve older people’s access to pain management services
Generalization of the JTZ model to open plane wakes
The JTZ model [C. Jung, T. T\'el and E. Ziemniak, Chaos {\bf 3}, (1993) 555],
as a theoretical model of a plane wake behind a circular cylinder in a narrow
channel at a moderate Reynolds number, has previously been employed to analyze
phenomena of chaotic scattering. It is extended here to describe an open plane
wake without the confined narrow channel by incorporating a double row of
shedding vortices into the intermediate and far wake. The extended JTZ model is
found in qualitative agreement with both direct numerical simulations and
experimental results in describing streamlines and vorticity contours. To
further validate its applications to particle transport processes, the
interaction between small spherical particles and vortices in an extended JTZ
model flow is studied. It is shown that the particle size has significant
influences on the features of particle trajectories, which have two
characteristic patterns: one is rotating around the vortex centers and the
other accumulating in the exterior of vortices. Numerical results based on the
extended JTZ model are found in qualitative agreement with experimental ones in

Methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus producing Panton-Valentine leukocidin toxin in Trinidad & Tobago: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Certain <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>strains produce Panton-Valentine leukocidin, a toxin that lyses white blood cells causing extensive tissue necrosis and chronic, recurrent or severe infection. This report documents a confirmed case of methicillin-sensitive <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>strain harboring Panton-Valentine leukocidin genes from Trinidad and Tobago. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such a case has been identified and reported from this country.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 13-year-old Trinidadian boy of African descent presented with upper respiratory symptoms and gastroenteritis-like syptoms. About two weeks later he was re-admitted to our hospital complaining of pain and weakness affecting his left leg, where he had received an intramuscular injection of an anti-emetic drug. He deteriorated and developed septic arthritis, necrotizing fasciitis and septic shock with acute respiratory distress syndrome, leading to death within 48 hours of admission despite intensive care treatment. The infection was caused by <it>S. aureus</it>. Bacterial isolates from specimens recovered from our patient before and after his death were analyzed using microarray DNA analysis and <it>spa </it>typing, and the results revealed that the <it>S. aureus </it>isolates belonged to clonal complex 8, were methicillin-susceptible and positive for Panton-Valentine leukocidin. An autopsy revealed multi-organ failure and histological tissue stains of several organs were also performed and showed involvement of his lungs, liver, kidneys and thymus, which showed Hassal's corpuscles.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Rapid identification of Panton-Valentine leukocidin in methicillin-sensitive <it>S. aureus </it>isolates causing severe infections is necessary so as not to miss their potentially devastating consequences. Early feedback from the clinical laboratories is crucial.</p
Reconciling surface deflections from simulations of global mantle convection
The modern state of the mantle and its evolution on geological timescales are of widespread importance for the Earth sciences. For instance, it is generally agreed that mantle flow is manifest in topographic and drainage network evolution, glacio-eustasy, and the distribution of sediments. There are now a variety of theoretical approaches to predict histories of mantle convection and its impact on surface deflections. A general goal is to make use of observed deflections to identify Earth-like simulations and constrain the history of mantle convection. Several important insights into the role of radial and non-radial viscosity variations, gravitation, and the importance of shallow structure already exist. Here we seek to bring those insights into a single framework to elucidate the relative importance of popular modeling choices for predicted instantaneous vertical surface deflections. We start by comparing results from numeric and analytic approaches to solving the equations of motion that are ostensibly parameterized to be as similar as possible. Deflections predicted by such numeric and analytic models can vary by ∼ 10 %, and the difference increases to ∼ 25 % when viscosity is temperature-dependent. Including self-gravitation and the gravitational potential of the deflected surface is a relatively small source of discrepancy. However, spherical harmonic correlations between model predictions decrease dramatically with the removal of shallow structure to increasing depths and when radial viscosity structure is modified. The results emphasize the sensitivity of instantaneous surface deflections to density and viscosity anomalies in the upper mantle. They reinforce the view that a detailed understanding of lithospheric structure is crucial for relating mantle convective history to observations of vertical motions at Earth's surface.</p

Turbulence and Fossil Turbulence in Oceans and Lakes
Turbulence is defined as an eddy-like state of fluid motion where the
inertial-vortex forces of the eddies are larger than any of the other forces
that tend to damp the eddies out. Energy cascades of irrotational flows from
large scales to small are non-turbulent, even if they supply energy to
turbulence. Turbulent flows are rotational and cascade from small scales to
large, with feedback. Viscous forces limit the smallest turbulent eddy size to
the Kolmogorov scale. In stratified fluids, buoyancy forces limit large
vertical overturns to the Ozmidov scale and convert the largest turbulent
eddies into a unique class of saturated, non-propagating, internal waves,
termed fossil-vorticity-turbulence. These waves have the same energy but
different properties and spectral forms than the original turbulence patch. The
Gibson (1980, 1986) theory of fossil turbulence applies universal similarity
theories of turbulence and turbulent mixing to the vertical evolution of an
isolated patch of turbulence in a stratified fluid as its growth is constrained
and fossilized by buoyancy forces. These theories apply to the dynamics of
