Apollo experience report guidance and control systems: Primary guidance, navigation, and control system development
The primary guidance, navigation, and control systems for both the lunar module and the command module are described. Development of the Apollo primary guidance systems is traced from adaptation of the Polaris Mark II system through evolution from Block I to Block II configurations; the discussion includes design concepts used, test and qualification programs performed, and major problems encountered. The major subsystems (inertial, computer, and optical) are covered. Separate sections on the inertial components (gyroscopes and accelerometers) are presented because these components represent a major contribution to the success of the primary guidance, navigation, and control system
Magnetism, X-rays, and Accretion Rates in WD 1145+017 and other Polluted White Dwarf Systems
This paper reports circular spectropolarimetry and X-ray observations of
several polluted white dwarfs including WD 1145+017, with the aim to constrain
the behavior of disk material and instantaneous accretion rates in these
evolved planetary systems. Two stars with previously observed Zeeman splitting,
WD 0322-019 and WD 2105-820, are detected above 5 sigma and > 1 kG, while
WD 1145+017, WD 1929+011, and WD 2326+049 yield (null) detections below this
minimum level of confidence. For these latter three stars, high-resolution
spectra and atmospheric modeling are used to obtain limits on magnetic field
strengths via the absence of Zeeman splitting, finding B* < 20 kG based on data
with resolving power R near 40 000. An analytical framework is presented for
bulk Earth composition material falling onto the magnetic polar regions of
white dwarfs, where X-rays and cyclotron radiation may contribute to accretion
luminosity. This analysis is applied to X-ray data for WD 1145+017, WD
1729+371, and WD 2326+049, and the upper bound count rates are modeled with
spectra for a range of plasma kT = 1 - 10 keV in both the magnetic and
non-magnetic accretion regimes. The results for all three stars are consistent
with a typical dusty white dwarf in a steady-state at 1e8 - 1e9 g/s. In
particular, the non-magnetic limits for WD 1145+017 are found to be well below
previous estimates of up to 1e12 g/s, and likely below 1e10 g/s, thus
suggesting the star-disk system may be average in its evolutionary state, and

NAIF Toolkit - Extended
The Navigation Ancillary Infor ma tion Facility (NAIF) at JPL, acting under the direction of NASA s Office of Space Science, has built a data system named SPICE (Spacecraft Planet Instrument Cmatrix Events) to assist scientists in planning and interpreting scientific observations (see figure). SPICE provides geometric and some other ancillary information needed to recover the full value of science instrument data, including correlation of individual instrument data sets with data from other instruments on the same or other spacecraft. This data system is used to produce space mission observation geometry data sets known as SPICE kernels. It is also used to read SPICE kernels and to compute derived quantities such as positions, orientations, lighting angles, etc. The SPICE toolkit consists of a subroutine/ function library, executable programs (both large applications and simple utilities that focus on kernel management), and simple examples of using SPICE toolkit subroutines. This software is very accurate, thoroughly tested, and portable to all computers. It is extremely stable and reusable on all missions. Scaling-up co-trimoxazole prophylaxis in HIV-exposed and HIV-infected children in high HIV-prevalence countries.
Co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) is a widely available antibiotic that substantially reduces HIV-related morbidity and mortality in both adults and children. Prophylaxis with co-trimoxazole is a recommended intervention of proven benefit that could serve not only as an initial step towards improving paediatric care in young children with limited access to antiretroviral treatment, but also as an important complement to antiretroviral therapy in resource-limited settings. Despite co-trimoxazole's known clinical benefits, the potential operational benefits, and favourable recommendations by WHO, UNAIDS, and UNICEF, its routine use in developing countries--particularly sub-Saharan Africa--has remained limited. Out of an estimated 4 million children in need of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis (HIV-exposed and HIV-infected), only 4% are currently receiving this intervention. We discuss some of the major barriers preventing the scale-up of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis for children in countries with a high prevalence of HIV and propose specific actions required to tackle these challenges
Spin Echo Decay in a Stochastic Field Environment
We derive a general formalism with which it is possible to obtain the time
dependence of the echo size for a spin in a stochastic field environment. Our
model is based on ``strong collisions''. We examine in detail three cases
where: (I) the local field is Ising-like, (II) the field distribution is
continuous and has a finite second moment, and (III) the distribution is
Lorentzian. The first two cases show a T2 minimum effect and are exponential in
time cubed for short times. The last case can be approximated by a

First Observation of the Rare Decay Mode K-long -> e+ e-
In an experiment designed to search for and study very rare two-body decay
modes of the K-long, we have observed four examples of the decay K-long -> e+
e-, where the expected background is 0.17+-0.10 events. This observation
translates into a branching fraction of 8.7^{+5.7}_{-4.1} X 10^{-12},
consistent with recent theoretical predictions. This result represents by far
the smallest branching fraction yet measured in particle physics.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Factorizations of Elements in Noncommutative Rings: A Survey
We survey results on factorizations of non zero-divisors into atoms
(irreducible elements) in noncommutative rings. The point of view in this
survey is motivated by the commutative theory of non-unique factorizations.
Topics covered include unique factorization up to order and similarity, 2-firs,
and modular LCM domains, as well as UFRs and UFDs in the sense of Chatters and
Jordan and generalizations thereof. We recall arithmetical invariants for the
study of non-unique factorizations, and give transfer results for arithmetical
invariants in matrix rings, rings of triangular matrices, and classical maximal
orders as well as classical hereditary orders in central simple algebras over

Vortex State of TlBaCuO via Tl NMR at 2 Tesla
We report a Tl NMR study of vortex state for an aligned
polycrystalline sample of an overdoped high- superconductor
TlBaCuO (85 K) with magnetic field 2 T along
the c axis. We observed an imperfect vortex lattice, so-called Bragg glass at
=5 K, coexistence of vortex solid with liquid between 10 and 60 K, and
vortex melting between 65 and 85 K. No evidence for local antiferromagnetic
ordering at vortex cores was found for our sample.Comment: 4 pages with 5 figure
Developing autonomous learning in first year university students using perspectives from positive psychology
Autonomous learning is a commonly occurring learning outcome from university study, and it is argued that students require confidence in their own abilities to achieve this. Using approaches from positive psychology, this study aimed to develop confidence in first‐year university students to facilitate autonomous learning. Psychological character strengths were assessed in 214 students on day one at university. Two weeks later their top three strengths were given to them in study skills modules as part of a psycho‐educational intervention designed to increase their self‐efficacy and self‐esteem. The impact of the intervention was assessed against a control group of 40 students who had not received the intervention. The results suggested that students were more confident after the intervention, and that levels of autonomous learning increased significantly compared to the controls. Character strengths were found to be associated with self‐efficacy, self‐esteem and autonomous learning in ways that were theoretically meaningful
