An investigation into CLIL-related sections of EFL coursebooks : issues of CLIL inclusion in the publishing market
The current ELT global coursebook market has embraced CLIL as a weak form of bilingual education and an innovative component to include in General English coursebooks for EFL contexts. In this paper I investigate how CLIL is included in ELT coursebooks aimed at
teenaged learners, available to teachers in Argentina. My study is based on the content analysis of four series which include a section advertised as CLIL-oriented. Results suggest that such sections are characterised by (1) little correlation between featured subject specific content and school curricula in L1, (2) oversimplification of contents, and (3) dominance of reading skills development and lower-order thinking tasks. An international comparative study of blood pressure in populations of European vs. African descent
Background: The consistent finding of higher prevalence of hypertension in US blacks compared
to whites has led to speculation that African-origin populations are particularly susceptible to this
condition. Large surveys now provide new information on this issue.
Methods: Using a standardized analysis strategy we examined prevalence estimates for 8 white
and 3 black populations (N = 85,000 participants).
Results: The range in hypertension prevalence was from 27 to 55% for whites and 14 to 44% for
blacks.
Conclusions: These data demonstrate that not only is there a wide variation in hypertension
prevalence among both racial groups, the rates among blacks are not unusually high when viewed
internationally. These data suggest that the impact of environmental factors among both
populations may have been under-appreciated
Visual arguments in film
Nuestro objetivo es señalar algunas diferencias entre los argumentos verbales y visuales, y promover la perspectiva retórica de la argumentación, yendo más allá de la relevancia de la lógica y de la pragmática. En nuestra opinión, si ha de ser racional y aceptable como argumentación (visual), un film debe dirigirse a espectadores que tienen creencias informadas sobre el tema visto en la pantalla y sobre las limitaciones y las convenciones del medio. En nuestras reflexiones, aplicamos el análisis retórico al cine como un acto simbólico, humano y comunicativo que a veces puede entenderse como un argumento trazado visualmente. Como mezcla de estímulos visuales, auditivos y verbales, el film exige una interpretación y una (re)construcción activas y complejas. Nuestra sugerencia es concentrarse en cinco elementos diferentes, pero relacionados entre sí. La reconstrucción y la evaluación del argumento visual se basarán en esos elementos, y todo el proceso constituirá una argumentación visual.Our aim is to point out some differences between verbal and visual
arguments, promoting the rhetorical perspective of argumentation beyond the relevance
of logic and pragmatics. In our view, if it is to be rational and successful,
film as (visual) argumentation must be addressed to spectators who hold informed
beliefs about the theme watched on the screen and the medium’s constraints and
conventions. In our reflections to follow, we apply rhetorical analysis to film as a
symbolic, human, and communicative act that may sometimes be understood as a
visually laid out argument. As a mixture of visual, auditory, and verbal stimuli, film
demands active and complex interpretation and (re)construction. Our suggestion is
to focus on five different but interrelated elements. The reconstruction and evaluation
of the visual argument will be based on those elements, and the whole process
will be one of visual argumentation

Pilot Study: HPV Infection Knowledge & HPV Vaccine Acceptance among Women Residing in Ciudad Juárez, México
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the world and it is associated with cervical cancer. The development of a prophylactic HPV vaccine has proven effective in clinical trials and it is now available to the public. The HPV vaccine represents a viable prevention strategy against cervical cancer. However, parental preferences, perceptions, and willingness to use the HPV vaccine are crucial, and if not assessed accurately, may threaten the successful implementation of a broad HPV vaccination program. This pilot study explored the views of 60 adult, Mexican women, all of who were mothers of female children between the ages of ten to 14 years old on the following four areas of interest: HPV knowledge; HPV vaccine knowledge and attitudes; barriers to HPV vaccine use; and potential uses and side effects of the HPV vaccine. Only 7% of respondents knew that HPV was a virus or STI. Eighty-six percent had not heard of the HPV vaccine, but 62% felt that the HPV vaccine would prevent HPV infection. However, 38% said the church would not approve of the HPV vaccine use for 10-14-year-old girls. Twenty-seven percent thought that promiscuous behavior would increase following HPV vaccination. Overall, respondents had very little knowledge of the HPV vaccine, were willing to be vaccinated themselves (83%), but were lesser willing to vaccinate their daughters (63%). Ultimately, understanding the beliefs about and identifying the barriers of HPV vaccine use will influence the effectiveness of the vaccine and its potential impact in reducing cervical cancer incidence rates worldwide
An assessment of existing models for individualized breast cancer risk estimation in a screening program in Spain
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the calibration and discriminatory power of three predictive
models of breast cancer risk.
Methods: We included 13,760 women who were first-time participants in the Sabadell-Cerdanyola Breast Cancer
Screening Program, in Catalonia, Spain. Projections of risk were obtained at three and five years for invasive cancer
using the Gail, Chen and Barlow models. Incidence and mortality data were obtained from the Catalan registries.
The calibration and discrimination of the models were assessed using the Hosmer-Lemeshow C statistic, the area
under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and the Harrell’s C statistic.
Results: The Gail and Chen models showed good calibration while the Barlow model overestimated the number of
cases: the ratio between estimated and observed values at 5 years ranged from 0.86 to 1.55 for the first two models
and from 1.82 to 3.44 for the Barlow model. The 5-year projection for the Chen and Barlow models had the highest
discrimination, with an AUC around 0.58. The Harrell’s C statistic showed very similar values in the 5-year projection
for each of the models. Although they passed the calibration test, the Gail and Chen models overestimated the
number of cases in some breast density categories.
Conclusions: These models cannot be used as a measure of individual risk in early detection programs to
customize screening strategies. The inclusion of longitudinal measures of breast density or other risk factors in joint

The ateneo as an effective model of continuing professional development:Findings from southern Argentina
Despite a sustainable research interest in different forms of teachers’ professional development, scant international attention has been paid to forms of professional development which are implemented in South America. Based on a qualitative research design, this study explores the impact of the ateneo as an innovative model of continuing professional development. An ateneo is a model which supports teacher reflection and change in teaching practices by concentrating on context-responsive practical issues such as lesson planning and delivery. The study was carried out with 22 teachers of English as a foreign language in southern Argentina. Data were gathered through the teachers’ lesson plans, whole group discussions, and the teachers’ final assignments to receive credits for completion of the ateneo. Drawing on thematic analysis, the participants envisaged the ateneo as a practice-oriented, dynamic, interaction-based, and personal as well as collective space for developing teaching skills and professional knowledge. In particular, findings show that the participants exhibited an improvement in lesson contextualization, sequencing and transitioning, maximization of resources, class time management, and reflective teaching. The study argues that the ateneo became successful given the shared teacher identity among the participants and the course tutors and the explicit focus on the teachers’ daily practices
