DC-Prophet: Predicting Catastrophic Machine Failures in DataCenters

When will a server fail catastrophically in an industrial datacenter? Is it possible to forecast these failures so preventive actions can be taken to increase the reliability of a datacenter? To answer these questions, we have studied what are probably the largest, publicly available datacenter traces, containing more than 104 million events from 12,500 machines. Among these samples, we observe and categorize three types of machine failures, all of which are catastrophic and may lead to information loss, or even worse, reliability degradation of a datacenter. We further propose a two-stage framework-DC-Prophet-based on One-Class Support Vector Machine and Random Forest. DC-Prophet extracts surprising patterns and accurately predicts the next failure of a machine. Experimental results show that DC-Prophet achieves an AUC of 0.93 in predicting the next machine failure, and a F3-score of 0.88 (out of 1). On average, DC-Prophet outperforms other classical machine learning methods by 39.45% in F3-score.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted by 2017 ECML PKD

A modified Brazilian test for the generalized-fracturetoughness determination in multimaterial corners. Numerical and experimental results

IX CONGRESO NACIONAL DE MATERIALES COMPUESTOS. Celebrado en Girona, 5, 6, 7 y 8 de julio de 2011In the present work, a general procedure for the experimental evaluation of the generalized fracture toughness in multimaterial corners is defined. The proposed method is suitable for closed corners (all material wedges being bonded) having two singular terms in the asymptotic stress representation at the corner tip. For a particular corner configuration, the method finds the load configuration at which one of the singular terms vanishes, thus the main stress contribution being controlled by the other non-vanishing singular term. The experimental test, until failure, using the previously defined load configuration allows the generalized fracture toughness associated to each singular term to be evaluated. The whole procedure has been applied to a bimaterial CFRP-Adhesive bimaterial corner and the generalized fracture toughness values have been obtained. The testing of mixed modes has permitted a failure envelope based on the generalized fracture toughness values at the corner tip to be defined. Previously published results, with different geometries, but involving the same corner, have shown that the failure envelope can predict accurately the failure initiation at these corners.Junta de Andalucía y Fondo Social Europeo P08-TEP-4071Junta de Andalucía y Fondo Social Europeo P08-TEP-4051Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación MAT2009-14022CAPES Ministerio de Educación de Brasi

New objects in old structures: The Iron Age hoard of the Palacio III megalithic funerary complex (Almadén de la Plata, Seville, Spain)

Cultural contact, exchange and interaction feature high in the list of challenging topics of current research on European Prehistory. Not far off is the issue of the changing role of monuments in the making and maintaining of key cultural devices such as memory and identity. Addressing both these highly-debated issues from a science-based perspective, in this paper we look at an unusual case study set in southern Iberia and illustrate how these archaeological questions can benefit from robust materials-science approaches. We present the contextual, morphological and analytical study of an exceptional Early Iron Age hoard composed of a number of different (and mostly exotic) materials such as amber, quartz, silver and ceramic. This hoard, found under the fallen orthostat of a megalithic structure built at least 2000 years earlier, throws new light on long-distance exchange networks and the effect they could have had on the cultural identities and social relations of local Iberian Early Iron Age communities. Moreover, the archaeometric study reveals how diverse and distant the sources of these item are (Northern Europe to Eastern and Western Mediterranean raw materials, as well as local and eastern technologies), therefore raising questions concerning the social mechanisms used to establish change and resistance in contexts of colonial encounter

A SAURON look at galaxy bulges

Kinematic and population studies show that bulges are generally rotationally flattened systems similar to low-luminosity ellipticals. However, observations with state-of-the-art integral field spectrographs, such as SAURON, indicate that the situation is much more complex, and allow us to investigate phenomena such as triaxiality, kinematic decoupling and population substructure, and to study their connection to current formation and evolution scenarios for bulges of early-type galaxies. We present the examples of two S0 bulges from galaxies in our sample of nearby galaxies: one that shows all the properties expected from classical bulges (NGC5866), and another case that presents kinematic features appropriate for barred disk galaxies (NGC7332).Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publishing in AN (refereed conf. proc. of the Euro3D Science workshop, IoA Cambridge, May 2003

    Coping in Transplantated Patients

    Note on CKM Matrix Renormalization

A simple inspection of the one loop quark self-energy suggests a prescription of the CKM matrix renormalization in the standard model. It leads to a CKM matrix counterterm which is gauge parameter independent and satisfies the unitarity constraint, and renormalized physical amplitudes which are gauge parameter independent and smooth in quark mass difference. We make a point that caution should be practiced when interpreting the CKM martix counterterm in terms of those of parameters in a given representation due to rephasing effects from renormalization. We show how this can be done using the degrees of freedom in the on-shell renormalization scheme.Comment: version 1: 10 pages, no figures; version 2: proofread version for Phys Rev D with minor revisions: (1) divided into 3 sections; (2) added a footnote Comment on Ref. Electroweak Corrections to the Top Quark Decay

    Get PDF
We have calculated the one-loop electroweak corrections to the decay t-> bW+, including the counterterm for the CKM matrix elements V(tb). Previous calculations used an incorrect delta V(tb) that led to a gauge dependent amplitude. However, since the contribution stemming from delta V(tb) is small, those calculations only underestimate the width by roughly one part in 10^5.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

Characterizing stellar populations in spiral disks

It is now possible to measure detailed spectral indices for stellar populations in spiral disks. We propose to interpret these data using evolutionary synthesis models computed from the Star Formation Histories obtained from chemical evolutionary models. We find that this technique is a powerful tool to discriminate between old and young stellar populations. We show an example of the power of Integral Field spectroscopy in unveiling the spatial distribution of populations in a barred galaxy.Comment: 5 pages, to be published in "Science Perspectives for 3D Spectroscopy", Eds.
