    Geological mapping of mountains belts is fundamental to understanding their structure and evolution. Here, a 1:200,000 scale geological map of the central Himalaya of Western Region, Nepal is presented. This map represents a compilation of previously published maps, integrated with new geological field data. The wide spatial coverage of the map and the accompanying cross sections reveal the detailed structure of the Dhaulagiri-Annapurna-Manaslu Himalaya. The addition of modern topographic and infrastructure data makes this map suitable for navigation through the region

    The impact of the stringent response on TRAFAC GTPases and prokaryotic ribosome assembly

    Many facets of ribosome biogenesis and function, including ribosomal RNA (rRNA) transcription, 70S assembly and protein translation, are negatively impacted upon induction of a nutrient stress-sensing signalling pathway termed the stringent response. This stress response is mediated by the alarmones guanosine tetra- and penta-phosphate ((p)ppGpp), the accumulation of which leads to a massive cellular response that slows growth and aids survival. The 70S bacterial ribosome is an intricate structure, with assembly both complex and highly modular. Presiding over the assembly process is a group of P-loop GTPases within the TRAFAC (Translation Factor Association) superclass that are crucial for correct positioning of both early and late stage ribosomal proteins (r-proteins) onto the rRNA. Often described as ‘molecular switches’, members of this GTPase superfamily readily bind and hydrolyse GTP to GDP in a cyclic manner that alters the propensity of the GTPase to carry out a function. TRAFAC GTPases are considered to act as checkpoints to ribosome assembly, involved in binding to immature sections in the GTP-bound state, preventing further r-protein association until maturation is complete. Here we review our current understanding of the impact of the stringent response and (p)ppGpp production on ribosome maturation in prokaryotic cells, focusing on the inhibition of (p)ppGpp on GTPase-mediated subunit assembly, but also touching upon the inhibition of rRNA transcription and protein translation

    Visitor expenditure estimation for grocery store location planning: a case study of Cornwall

    Visitor expenditure is an important driver of demand in many local economies, supporting a range of services and facilities which may not be viable based solely on residential demand. In areas where self-catering accommodation is prevalent visitor demand makes up a considerable proportion of sales and revenue within grocery stores, yet this form of visitor consumption is commonly overlooked in supply and demand-side estimates of visitor spend. As such, store location planning in tourist resorts, decisions about local service provision and the local economic impacts of tourism are based on very limited demand-side estimates of visitor spend. Using Cornwall, South West England as a study area, we outline a methodology and data sources to estimate small-area visitor grocery spend. We use self-catering accommodation provision, utilisation and visitor expenditure rates as key factors driving visitor spend. We identify that the use of visitor accommodation accounts for the spatial and temporal complexities of visitor demand that may be overlooked when using alternative approaches, such as the up-scaling of residential demand. Using a spatial interaction model, we demonstrate that our expenditure estimates can be used to generate store level revenue estimation within tourist resorts, and we make a number of recommendations for service provision and store location planning in these areas

    Inducing social self‐sorting in organic cages to tune the shape of the internal cavity

    Many interesting target guest molecules have low symmetry, yet most methods for synthesising hosts result in highly symmetrical capsules. Methods of generating lower symmetry pores are thus required to maximise the binding affinity in host–guest complexes. Herein, we use mixtures of tetraaldehyde building blocks with cyclohexanediamine to access low-symmetry imine cages. Whether a low-energy cage is isolated can be correctly predicted from the thermodynamic preference observed in computational models. The stability of the observed structures depends on the geometrical match of the aldehyde building blocks. One bent aldehyde stands out as unable to assemble into high-symmetry cages-and the same aldehyde generates low-symmetry socially self-sorted cages when combined with a linear aldehyde. We exploit this finding to synthesise a family of low-symmetry cages containing heteroatoms, illustrating that pores of varying geometries and surface chemistries may be reliably accessed through computational prediction and self-sorting

    The response of glass window systems to blast loadings: An overview

    The failure of glass windows in terrorist bombing attacks and accidental explosion incidents has been cited as one of the major causes to the vast casualties. Many studies have been carried out to investigate the response and vulnerability of glass windows against blast loadings. These include laboratory and field tests that have been carried out to experimentally study glass window performance under explosion scenarios and development of analytical and numerical models to analyze and predict glass window responses. This article reviews literatures on the studies of the response of glass window systems to blast loadings. Over 100 papers and documents that are available in the open literature are reviewed. The background and history of the studies on the topic are also briefed. Understandings about the dynamic material properties of glass and available material models are summarized. Popularly used analysis methods and design standards for monolithic and laminated glass windows are outlined, and their accuracies are discussed. Recent studies including analytical solution, numerical simulation, and experimental investigations on glass window systems are summarized. Mitigation measures for blast-resistant windows are also briefly discussed
