Classical cloud-top entrainment instability condition formulation is discussed. A saturation point diagram is used to investigate the details of mixing in cases where the cloud-top entrainment instability criterion is satisfied
Haze in the Klang Valley of Malaysia
Continuous measurements of dry aerosol light scattering (Bsp) were made at two sites in the Klang Valley of Malaysia between December 1998 and December 2000. In addition 24-h PM2.5 samples were collected on a one-day-in-six cycle and the chemical composition of the aerosol was determined. Periods of excessive haze were defined as 24-h average Bsp values greater than 150 Mm-1 and these occurred on a number of occasions, between May and September 1999, during May 2000, and between July and September 2000. The evidence for smoke being a significant contributor to aerosol during periods of excessive haze is discussed and includes features of the aerosol chemistry, the diurnal cycle of Bsp, and the coincidence of forest fires on Sumatra during the southwest (SW) monsoon period, as well as transport modelling for one week of the southwest Monsoon of 2000. The study highlights that whilst transboundary smoke is a major contributor to poor visibility in the Klang Valley, smoke from fires on Peninsular Malaysia is also a contributor, and at all times, the domestic source of secondary particle production is present

Bragg spectroscopy of a superfluid Bose-Hubbard gas
Bragg spectroscopy is used to measure excitations of a trapped,
quantum-degenerate gas of 87Rb atoms in a 3-dimensional optical lattice. The
measurements are carried out over a range of optical lattice depths in the
superfluid phase of the Bose-Hubbard model. For fixed wavevector, the resonant
frequency of the excitation is found to decrease with increasing lattice depth.
A numerical calculation of the resonant frequencies based on Bogoliubov theory
shows a less steep rate of decrease than the measurements.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Bose-Einstein Condensate in Weak 3d Isotropic Speckle Disorder
The effect of a weak three-dimensional (3d) isotropic laser speckle disorder
on various thermodynamic properties of a dilute Bose gas is considered at zero
temperature. First, we summarize the derivation of the autocorrelation function
of laser speckles in 1d and 2d following the seminal work of Goodman. The goal
of this discussion is to show that a Gaussian approximation of this function,
proposed in some recent papers, is inconsistent with the general background of
laser speckle theory. Then we propose a possible experimental realization for
an isotropic 3d laser speckle potential and derive its corresponding
autocorrelation function. Using a Fourier transform of that function, we
calculate both condensate depletion and sound velocity of a Bose-Einstein
condensate as disorder ensemble averages of such a weak laser speckle potential
within a perturbative solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By doing so,
we reproduce the expression of the normalfluid density obtained earlier within
the treatment of Landau. This physically transparent derivation shows that
condensate particles, which are scattered by disorder, form a gas of
quasiparticles which is responsible for the normalfluid component

В данной работе представлены существующие подходы и методы применения генетических алгоритмов для решения задач многокритериальной оптимизации. Предложены математическая модель и алгоритмы решения многокритериальной задачи выбора стратегии развития производственной системы. Представлены также результаты применения для решения этой задачи метода присваивания рангов Голдберга и гибридного генетического алгоритма.Представлені існуючи підходи і методи застосування генетичних алгоритмів для рішення залач багатокритеріальної оптимізації. Запропоновано математичну модель і алгоритми розв’язку багатокритеріальної задачі вибору стратегії розвитку виробничої системи. Навелено результати застосування для розв’язку цієї задачі методу надання рангів Голдберга і гібридного генетичного алгоритму.This paper describes the existing approaches and methods of application of genetic algorithms for multiobjective optimization. Optical Lattices: Theory
This chapter presents an overview of the properties of a Bose-Einstein
condensate (BEC) trapped in a periodic potential. This system has attracted a
wide interest in the last years, and a few excellent reviews of the field have
already appeared in the literature (see, for instance, [1-3] and references
therein). For this reason, and because of the huge amount of published results,
we do not pretend here to be comprehensive, but we will be content to provide a
flavor of the richness of this subject, together with some useful references.
On the other hand, there are good reasons for our effort. Probably, the most
significant is that BEC in periodic potentials is a truly interdisciplinary
problem, with obvious connections with electrons in crystal lattices, polarons
and photons in optical fibers. Moreover, the BEC experimentalists have reached
such a high level of accuracy to create in the lab, so to speak, paradigmatic
Hamiltonians, which were first introduced as idealized theoretical models to

Comparison of different definitions to classify remission and sustained remission: 1 year TEMPO results
To assess methods to calculate achieving and sustaining remission in a double blind randomised trial in patients with RA who received etanercept, methotrexate, or an etanercept/methotrexate combination. Remission was defined as DAS <1.6, DAS28 <2.6, and ACR70 response. Sustaining remission was analysed in three ways: (a) analysis of sustained DAS remission, DAS28 remission, or ACR70 response continuously for 6 months; (b) analysis of sustained remission appraised through a continuity rewarded scoring system, which is the weighted sum of all intervals in the study in which patients are in DAS or DAS28 remission; or (c) longitudinal modelling of remission odds using generalised estimating equations. Significantly more patients treated with the etanercept/methotrexate combination reached DAS remission (37%) than those treated with either methotrexate (14%) or etanercept (18%) alone (p <0.01). Results for DAS28 and for the ACR70 response were similar. Agreement between DAS remission and DAS28 remission was good, but agreement between either of these and the ACR70 response was less. Patients in DAS or DAS28 remission had a lower level of disease activity (fewer active joints, lower ESR) than those achieving ACR70 response; the converse was seen using pain VAS. The three methods were comparable for sustainability of remission and showed significant advantage for combination therapy, which increased the number and durability of remission periods. DAS and DAS28 remission results were similar for assessing achieving and sustaining remission in RA, frequently differing from patients classified as ACR70 responders. The three methods of examining duration of remission produced comparable result
Localization from quantum interference in one-dimensional disordered potentials
We show that the tails of the asymptotic density distribution of a quantum
wave packet that localizes in the the presence of random or quasiperiodic
disorder can be described by the diagonal term of the projection over the
eingenstates of the disordered potential. This is equivalent of assuming a
phase randomization of the off-diagonal/interference terms. We demonstrate
these results through numerical calculations of the dynamics of ultracold atoms
in the one-dimensional speckle and quasiperiodic potentials used in the recent
experiments that lead to the observation of Anderson localization for matter
waves [Billy et al., Nature 453, 891 (2008); Roati et al., Nature 453, 895
(2008)]. For the quasiperiodic case, we also discuss the implications of using
