Ground simulation and tunnel blockage for a jet-flapped, basic STOL model tested to very high lift coefficients
Ground effects experiments and large/small-tunnel interference studies were carried out on a model with a 20-inch (50.8 cm) span wing. The wing, which includes a highly deflected knee-blown flap can be fitted with unflapped tips and slats. A low-mounted tailplane can be fitted to the aft fuselage. Three-component balance meaurements, made with a fixed ground equipped with a single boundary-layer blowing slot, were compared with datum, moving-ground results. Good comparisons were obtained up to model blowing momentum coefficients of approximately two, after which the particular floor blowing settings used proved insufficient to prevent floor separation in the vicinity of the model. Skin friction measurements, taken routinely along the floor centerline, proved invaluable during the analysis of results, and their use is recommended as input to determination of floor BLC setting. A careful investigation was made of pitching moments, including tail-on, close-to-ground cases, with favorable results. SN 2009E: a faint clone of SN 1987A
In this paper we investigate the properties of SN 2009E, which exploded in a
relatively nearby spiral galaxy (NGC 4141) and that is probably the faintest
1987A-like supernova discovered so far. Spectroscopic observations which
started about 2 months after the supernova explosion, highlight significant
differences between SN 2009E and the prototypical SN 1987A. Modelling the data
of SN 2009E allows us to constrain the explosion parameters and the properties
of the progenitor star, and compare the inferred estimates with those available
for the similar SNe 1987A and 1998A. The light curve of SN 2009E is less
luminous than that of SN 1987A and the other members of this class, and the
maximum light curve peak is reached at a slightly later epoch than in SN 1987A.
Late-time photometric observations suggest that SN 2009E ejected about 0.04
solar masses of 56Ni, which is the smallest 56Ni mass in our sample of
1987A-like events. Modelling the observations with a radiation hydrodynamics
code, we infer for SN 2009E a kinetic plus thermal energy of about 0.6 foe, an
initial radius of ~7 x 10^12 cm and an ejected mass of ~19 solar masses. The
photospheric spectra show a number of narrow (v~1800 km/s) metal lines, with
unusually strong Ba II lines. The nebular spectrum displays narrow emission
lines of H, Na I, [Ca II] and [O I], with the [O I] feature being relatively
strong compared to the [Ca II] doublet. The overall spectroscopic evolution is
reminiscent of that of the faint 56Ni-poor type II-plateau supernovae. This
suggests that SN 2009E belongs to the low-luminosity, low 56Ni mass, low-energy
tail in the distribution of the 1987A-like objects in the same manner as SN
1997D and similar events represent the faint tail in the distribution of

The Big Society and the Conjunction of Crises: Justifying Welfare Reform and Undermining Social Housing
The idea of the “Big Society” can be seen as culmination of a long-standing debate about the regulation of welfare. Situating the concept within governance theory, the article considers how the UK coalition government has justified a radical restructuring of welfare provision, and considers its implications for housing provision. Although drawing on earlier modernization processes, the article contends that the genesis for welfare reform was based on an analysis that the government was forced to respond to a unique conjunction of crises: in morality, the state, ideology and economics. The government has therefore embarked upon a programme, which has served to undermine the legitimacy of the social housing sector (most notably in England), with detrimental consequences for residents and raising significant dilemmas for those working in the housing sector
A Spitzer Survey for Dust in Type IIn Supernovae
Recent observations suggest that Type IIn supernovae (SNe IIn) may exhibit
late-time (>100 days) infrared (IR) emission from warm dust more than other
types of core-collapse SNe. Mid-IR observations, which span the peak of the
thermal spectral energy distribution, provide useful constraints on the
properties of the dust and, ultimately, the circumstellar environment,
explosion mechanism, and progenitor system. Due to the low SN IIn rate (<10% of
all core-collapse SNe), few IR observations exist for this subclass. The
handful of isolated studies, however, show late-time IR emission from warm dust
that, in some cases, extends for five or six years post-discovery. While
previous Spitzer/IRAC surveys have searched for dust in SNe, none have targeted
the Type IIn subclass. This article presents results from a warm Spitzer/IRAC
survey of the positions of all 68 known SNe IIn within a distance of 250 Mpc
between 1999 and 2008 that have remained unobserved by Spitzer more than 100
days post-discovery. The detection of late-time emission from ten targets
(~15%) nearly doubles the database of existing mid-IR observations of SNe IIn.
Although optical spectra show evidence for new dust formation in some cases,
the data show that in most cases the likely origin of the mid-IR emission is
pre-existing dust, which is continuously heated by optical emission generated
by ongoing circumstellar interaction between the forward shock and
circumstellar medium. Furthermore, an emerging trend suggests that these SNe
decline at ~1000--2000 days post-discovery once the forward shock overruns the
dust shell. The mass-loss rates associated with these dust shells are

Modeling DNA Structure, Elasticity and Deformations at the Base-pair Level
We present a generic model for DNA at the base-pair level. We use a variant
of the Gay-Berne potential to represent the stacking energy between neighboring
base-pairs. The sugar-phosphate backbones are taken into account by semi-rigid
harmonic springs with a non-zero spring length. The competition of these two
interactions and the introduction of a simple geometrical constraint leads to a
stacked right-handed B-DNA-like conformation. The mapping of the presented
model to the Marko-Siggia and the Stack-of-Plates model enables us to optimize
the free model parameters so as to reproduce the experimentally known
observables such as persistence lengths, mean and mean squared base-pair step
parameters. For the optimized model parameters we measured the critical force
where the transition from B- to S-DNA occurs to be approximately . We
observe an overstretched S-DNA conformation with highly inclined bases that

Bi-allelic JAM2 Variants Lead to Early-Onset Recessive Primary Familial Brain Calcification.
Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a combination of neurological, psychiatric, and cognitive decline associated with calcium deposition on brain imaging. To date, mutations in five genes have been linked to PFBC. However, more than 50% of individuals affected by PFBC have no molecular diagnosis. We report four unrelated families presenting with initial learning difficulties and seizures and later psychiatric symptoms, cerebellar ataxia, extrapyramidal signs, and extensive calcifications on brain imaging. Through a combination of homozygosity mapping and exome sequencing, we mapped this phenotype to chromosome 21q21.3 and identified bi-allelic variants in JAM2. JAM2 encodes for the junctional-adhesion-molecule-2, a key tight-junction protein in blood-brain-barrier permeability. We show that JAM2 variants lead to reduction of JAM2 mRNA expression and absence of JAM2 protein in patient's fibroblasts, consistent with a loss-of-function mechanism. We show that the human phenotype is replicated in the jam2 complete knockout mouse (jam2 KO). Furthermore, neuropathology of jam2 KO mouse showed prominent vacuolation in the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and cerebellum and particularly widespread vacuolation in the midbrain with reactive astrogliosis and neuronal density reduction. The regions of the human brain affected on neuroimaging are similar to the affected brain areas in the myorg PFBC null mouse. Along with JAM3 and OCLN, JAM2 is the third tight-junction gene in which bi-allelic variants are associated with brain calcification, suggesting that defective cell-to-cell adhesion and dysfunction of the movement of solutes through the paracellular spaces in the neurovascular unit is a key mechanism in CNS calcification
Validity and reliability of the semi-quantitative self-report Home Food Availability Inventory Checklist (HFAI-C) in White and South Asian populations.
Despite interest in the importance of the home food environment and its potential influence on children's diets and social norms, there remain few self-report checklist methods that have been validated against the gold standard of researcher-conducted inventories. This study aimed to assess the criterion validity and reliability of the 'Home Food Availability Inventory Checklist' (HFAI-C), a 39-item checklist including categories of fruit, vegetables, snacks and drinks.The HFAI-C was completed by 97 participants of White and Pakistani origin in the UK. Validity was determined by comparing participant-reported HFAI-C responses to data from researcher observations of home food availability using PABAK and weighted kappa statistics. The validity of measuring the amount of items (in addition to presence/absence) available was also determined. Test-retest reliability compared repeated administrations of the HFAI-C using intra-class correlation coefficients.Validity and reliability was fair to moderate overall. For validity, the average category-level PABAK ranged from 0.31 (95 % CI: 0.25, 0.37) for vegetables to 0.44 (95 % CI: 0.40, 0.49) for fruits. Assessment of the presence/absence of items demonstrated higher validity compared to quantity measurements. Reliability was increased when the HFAI-C was repeated close to the time of the first administration. For example, ICCs for reliability of the measurement of fruits were 0.52 (95 %CI: 0.47, 0.56) if re-administered within 5 months, 0.58 (95 % CI: 0.51, 0.64) within 30 days and 0.97 (95 %CI: 0.94, 1.00) if re-administered on the same day.Overall, the HFAI-C demonstrated fair to moderate validity and reliability in a population of White and South Asian participants. This evaluation is consistent with previous work on other checklists in less diverse, more affluent populations. Our research supports the use of the HFAI-C as a useful, albeit imperfect, representation of researcher-conducted inventories. The feasibility of collecting information using the HFAI-C in large, multi-ethnic samples can facilitate examination of home food availability in relation to exposures such as ethnicity and outcomes including behavioural, social and health outcomes. Future work using the HFAI-C could provide important insights into a modifiable influence with potential to impact health
