Pesticide Exposure Alters Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Levels in Mexican Agricultural Workers
Organophosphorous pesticides (OPs) are suspected of altering reproductive function by reducing brain acetylcholinesterase activity and monoamine levels, thus impairing hypothalamic and/or pituitary endocrine functions and gonadal processes. Our objective was to evaluate in a longitudinal study the association between OP exposure and serum levels of pituitary and sex hormones. Urinary OP metabolite levels were measured by gas–liquid chromatography, and serum pituitary and sex hormone levels by enzymatic immunoassay and radioimmunoassay in 64 men. A total of 147 urine and blood samples were analyzed for each parameter. More than 80% of the participants had at least one OP metabolite in their urine samples. The most frequent metabolite found was diethylthiophosphate (DETP; 55%), followed by diethylphosphate (DEP; 46%), dimethylthiophosphate (DMTP; 32%), and dimethyldithiophosphate (DMDTP; 31%). However, the metabolites detected at higher concentrations were DMTP, DEP, DMDTP, and dimethylphosphate. There was a high proportion of individuals with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations outside the range of normality (48%). The average FSH serum levels were higher during the heavy pesticide spraying season. However, a multivariate analysis of data collected in all periods showed that serum FSH levels were negatively associated with urinary concentrations of both DMTP and DMDTP, whereas luteinizing hormone (LH) was negatively associated with DMTP. We observed no significant associations between estradiol or testosterone serum levels with OP metabolites. The hormonal disruption in agricultural workers presented here, together with results from experimental animal studies, suggests that OP exposure disrupts the hypothalamic–pituitary endocrine function and also indicates that FSH and LH are the hormones most affected
Direct and Simultaneous Observation of Ultrafast Electron and Hole Dynamics in Germanium
Understanding excited carrier dynamics in semiconductors is crucial for the
development of photovoltaics and efficient photonic devices. However,
overlapping spectral features in optical/NIR pump-probe spectroscopy often
render assignments of separate electron and hole carrier dynamics ambiguous.
Here, ultrafast electron and hole dynamics in germanium nanocrystalline thin
films are directly and simultaneously observed by attosecond transient
absorption spectroscopy (ATAS) in the extreme ultraviolet at the germanium
M_{4,5}-edge (~30 eV). We decompose the ATAS spectra into contributions of
electronic state blocking and photo-induced band shifts at a carrier density of
8*10^{20}cm^{-3}. Separate electron and hole relaxation times are observed as a
function of hot carrier energies. A first order electron and hole decay of ~1
ps suggests a Shockley-Read-Hall recombination mechanism. The simultaneous
observation of electrons and holes with ATAS paves the way for investigating
few to sub-femtosecond dynamics of both holes and electrons in complex

Assessing the Health of Richibucto Estuary with the Latent Health Factor Index
The ability to quantitatively assess the health of an ecosystem is often of
great interest to those tasked with monitoring and conserving ecosystems. For
decades, research in this area has relied upon multimetric indices of various
forms. Although indices may be numbers, many are constructed based on
procedures that are highly qualitative in nature, thus limiting the
quantitative rigour of the practical interpretations made from these indices.
The statistical modelling approach to construct the latent health factor index
(LHFI) was recently developed to express ecological data, collected to
construct conventional multimetric health indices, in a rigorous quantitative
model that integrates qualitative features of ecosystem health and preconceived
ecological relationships among such features. This hierarchical modelling
approach allows (a) statistical inference of health for observed sites and (b)
prediction of health for unobserved sites, all accompanied by formal
uncertainty statements. Thus far, the LHFI approach has been demonstrated and
validated on freshwater ecosystems. The goal of this paper is to adapt this
approach to modelling estuarine ecosystem health, particularly that of the
previously unassessed system in Richibucto in New Brunswick, Canada. Field data
correspond to biotic health metrics that constitute the AZTI marine biotic
index (AMBI) and abiotic predictors preconceived to influence biota. We also
briefly discuss related LHFI research involving additional metrics that form
the infaunal trophic index (ITI). Our paper is the first to construct a
scientifically sensible model to rigorously identify the collective explanatory
capacity of salinity, distance downstream, channel depth, and silt-clay content
--- all regarded a priori as qualitatively important abiotic drivers ---

Hepatitis C virus seroprevalence in pregnant women delivering live-born infants in North Thames, England in 2012
To estimate HCV seroprevalence in subpopulations of women delivering live-born infants in the North Thames region in England in 2012, an unlinked anonymous (UA) cross-sectional survey of neonatal dried blood spot samples was conducted. Data were available from 31467 samples from live-born infants received by the North Thames screening laboratory. Thirty neonatal samples had HCV antibodies, corresponding to a maternal seroprevalence of 0·095% (95% confidence interval 0·067-0·136). Estimated HCV seroprevalences in women born in Eastern Europe, Southern Asia and the UK were 0·366%, 0·162% and 0·019%, respectively. For women born in Eastern Europe seroprevalence was highest in those aged around 27 years, while in women born in the UK and Asia-Pacific region, seroprevalence increased significantly with age. HCV seroprevalence in UK-born women whose infant's father was also UK-born was 0·016%. One of the 30 HCV-seropositive women was HIV-1 seropositive. Estimated HCV seroprevalence for women delivering live-born infants in North Thames in 2012 (0·095%) was significantly lower than that reported in an earlier UA survey in 1997-1998 (0·191%). Data indicate that the cohort of UK-born HCV-seropositive women is ageing and that, in this area of England, most perinatally HCV-exposed infants were born to women themselves born in Southern Asia or Eastern Europe
Privacy Threats in E-Shopping (Position Paper)

customers with convenience, merchants with increased sales, and
financial entities with an additional source of income. However, it may
also be the source of serious threats to privacy. In this paper, we review
the e-shopping process, discussing attacks or threats that have been analyzed
in the literature for each of its stages. By showing that there exist
threats to privacy in each of them, we argue our following position: “It is
not enough to protect a single independent stage, as is usually done in
privacy respectful proposals in this context. Rather, a complete solution
is necessary spanning the overall process, dealing also with the required
interconnections between stages.” Our overview also reflects the diverse
types of information that e-shopping manages, and the benefits (e.g.,
such as loyalty programs and fraud prevention) that system providers
extract from them. This also endorses the need for solutions that, while
privacy preserving, do not limit or remove these benefits, if we want

What are the costs and benefits of biodiversity recovery in a highly polluted estuary?
Biodiversity recovery measures have often been ignored when dealing with the restoration of degraded aquatic systems. Furthermore, biological valuation methods have been applied only spatially in previous studies, and not jointly on a temporal and spatial scale. The intense monitoring efforts carried out in a highly polluted estuary, in northern Spain (Nervión estuary), allowed for the economic valuation of the costs and the biological valuation of the benefits associated with a 21 years sewage scheme application. The analysis show that the total amount of money invested into the sewage scheme has contributed to the estuary's improvement of both environmental and biological features, as well as to an increase in the uses and services provided by the estuary. However, the inner and outer parts of the estuary showed different responses. An understanding of the costs and trajectories of the environmental recovery of degraded aquatic systems is increasingly necessary to allow policy makers and regulators to formulate robust, cost-efficient and feasible management decisions
Identification of genes expressed by immune cells of the colon that are regulated by colorectal cancer-associated variants.
A locus on human chromosome 11q23 tagged by marker rs3802842 was associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) in a genome-wide association study; this finding has been replicated in case-control studies worldwide. In order to identify biologic factors at this locus that are related to the etiopathology of CRC, we used microarray-based target selection methods, coupled to next-generation sequencing, to study 103 kb at the 11q23 locus. We genotyped 369 putative variants from 1,030 patients with CRC (cases) and 1,061 individuals without CRC (controls) from the Ontario Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry. Two previously uncharacterized genes, COLCA1 and COLCA2, were found to be co-regulated genes that are transcribed from opposite strands. Expression levels of COLCA1 and COLCA2 transcripts correlate with rs3802842 genotypes. In colon tissues, COLCA1 co-localizes with crystalloid granules of eosinophils and granular organelles of mast cells, neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells and differentiated myeloid-derived cell lines. COLCA2 is present in the cytoplasm of normal epithelial, immune and other cell lineages, as well as tumor cells. Tissue microarray analysis demonstrates the association of rs3802842 with lymphocyte density in the lamina propria (p = 0.014) and levels of COLCA1 in the lamina propria (p = 0.00016) and COLCA2 (tumor cells, p = 0.0041 and lamina propria, p = 6 × 10(-5)). In conclusion, genetic, expression and immunohistochemical data implicate COLCA1 and COLCA2 in the pathogenesis of colon cancer. Histologic analyses indicate the involvement of immune pathways

Classical Setting and Effective Dynamics for Spinfoam Cosmology
We explore how to extract effective dynamics from loop quantum gravity and
spinfoams truncated to a finite fixed graph, with the hope of modeling
symmetry-reduced gravitational systems. We particularize our study to the
2-vertex graph with N links. We describe the canonical data using the recent
formulation of the phase space in terms of spinors, and implement a
symmetry-reduction to the homogeneous and isotropic sector. From the canonical
point of view, we construct a consistent Hamiltonian for the model and discuss
its relation with Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies. Then, we analyze the
dynamics from the spinfoam approach. We compute exactly the transition
amplitude between initial and final coherent spin networks states with support
on the 2-vertex graph, for the choice of the simplest two-complex (with a
single space-time vertex). The transition amplitude verifies an exact
differential equation that agrees with the Hamiltonian constructed previously.
