The gas phase cyclization of deprotonated N-aryl-2-cyano-2-diazoacetamides
The document attached has been archived with permission from the publisher.1-Aryl-4-cyano-5-hydroxy-1,2,3-triazoles can be obtained in solution by base-catalysed cyclization of N-aryl-2-cyano-2-diazoacetamides. A similar reaction was shown to take place under conditions of negative ion chemical ionization in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. High resolution mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, charge reversal spectra, synthesis of the ions with known structures and quantum chemical calculations were used to prove the latter statement. The fact of the observed cyclization demonstrates once again the ability of mass spectrometry to study the gas phase chemical reactions that take place in solution.Vladislav V. Lobodin, Yuriy Yu. Efficacy of Online Training for Improving Camp Staff Competency
Preparing competent staff is a critical issue within the camp community. This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of an online course for improving staff competency in camp healthcare practices among college-aged camp staff and a comparison group (N = 55). We hypothesized that working in camp would increase competency test scores due to opportunities for staff to experientially apply knowledge learned online. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyse the cross-level effects of a between-individuals factor (assignment to experimental or comparison group) and within-individual effects of time (pre-test, post-test #1, and post-test #2) on online course test scores. At post-test #2, the difference in average test scores between groups was ~30 points, with the treatment group scoring lower on average than the comparison group. Factors that may have influenced these findings are explored, including fatigue and the limited durability of online learning. Recommendations for research and practice are discussed
Investigating the New Landscapes of Welfare: Housing Policy, Politics and the Emerging Research Agenda
As debates about housing form an increasingly important arena of political controversy, much has been written about the new fissures that have appeared as governments not only struggle to reduce public expenditure deficits but also attempt to address problems such as affordability and homelessness. It is widely anticipated that new conflicts will be played out in the private rental market as access to homeownership becomes unrealistic and the supply of social housing diminishes. However, what other tensions might surface; that hitherto have not been subject to the critical gaze of housing research? In this paper, we provide some thoughts on the nascent policy issues as well as the ideological schisms that are likely to develop in coming years, offering suggestions as to how the focus of housing policy research might be reoriented towards a “politics” framework to capture and better understand the conflicts that are likely to arise
Asteroid Redirect Crewed Mission Space Suit and EVA System Architecture Trade Study
The Asteroid Redirect Crewed Mission (ARCM) requires a Launch/Entry/Abort (LEA) suit capability and short duration Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) capability for Orion. The EVAs will involve a two-person crew for approximately four hours. Currently, two EVAs are planned with one contingency EVA in reserve. Providing this EVA capability is very challenging due to system level constraints and a new and unknown environment. The goal of the EVA architecture for ARCM is one that builds upon previously developed technologies and lessons learned, and that accomplishes the ARCM mission while providing a stepping stone to future missions and destinations. The primary system level constraints are to 1) minimize system mass and volume and 2) minimize the interfacing impacts to the baseline Orion design. In order to minimize the interfacing impacts and to not perturb the baseline Orion schedule, the concept of adding "kits" to the baseline system is proposed. These kits consist of: an EVA kit (converts LEA suit to EVA suit), EVA Servicing and Recharge Kit (provides suit consumables), the EVA Tools, Translation Aids & Sample Container Kit (the tools and mobility aids to complete the tasks), the EVA Communications Kit (interface between the EVA radio and the MPCV), and the Cabin Repress Kit (represses the MPCV between EVAs). This paper will focus on the trade space, analysis, and testing regarding the space suit (pressure garment and life support system). Historical approaches and lessons learned from all past EVA operations were researched. Previous and current, successfully operated EVA hardware and high technology readiness level (TRL) hardware were evaluated, and a trade study was conducted for all possible pressure garment and life support options. Testing and analysis was conducted and a recommended EVA system architecture was proposed. Pressure garment options that were considered for this mission include the currently in-use ISS EVA Mobility Unit (EMU), all variations of the Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES), and the Exploration Z-suit. For this mission, the pressure garment that was selected is the Modified ACES (MACES) with EVA enhancements. Life support options that were considered included short closed-loop umbilicals, long open-loop umbilicals, the currently in-use ISS EMU Portable Life Support System (PLSS), and the currently in development Exploration PLSS. For this mission, the life support option that was selected is the Exploration PLSS. The greatest risk in the proposed architecture is viewed to be the comfort and mobility of the baseline MACES and the delicate balance between adding more mobility features while not compromising landing safety. Feasibility testing was accomplished in low fidelity analogs and in the JSC Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) to validate the concept before a final recommendation on the architecture was made. The proposed architecture was found to meet the mission constraints, but much more work is required to determine the details of the required suit upgrades, the integration with the PLSS, and the rest of the tools and equipment required to accomplish the mission. This work and further definition of the remaining kits will be conducted in government fiscal year 14

Opportunities for improved transparency in the timber trade through scientific verification
Published: 09 November 2016In May 2014, the Member States of the United Nations adopted Resolution 23/1 on “strengthening a targeted crime prevention and criminal justice response to combat illicit trafficking in forest products, including timber.” The resolution promotes the development of tools and technologies that can be used to combat the illicit trafficking of timber. Stopping illegal logging worldwide could substantially increase revenue from the legal trade in timber and halt the associated environmental degradation, but law enforcement and timber traders themselves are hampered by the lack of available tools to verify timber legality. Here, we outline how scientific methods can be used to verify global timber supply chains. We advocate that scientific methods are capable of supporting both enforcement and compliance with respect to timber laws but that work is required to expand the applicability of these methods and provide the certification, policy, and enforcement frameworks needed for effective routine implementation.Andrew J. The tilt of mean sea level along the east coast of North America
The tilt of mean sea level along the North American east coast has been a subject of debate for many decades. Improvements in geoid and ocean circulation models, and GPS positioning of tide gauge benchmarks, provide an opportunity to produce new tilt estimates. Tilts estimated using tide gauge measurements referenced to high-resolution geoid models (the geodetic approach) and ocean circulation models (the ocean approach) are compared. The geodetic estimates are broadly similar, with tilts downward to the north through the Florida Straits and at Cape Hatteras. Estimates from the ocean approach show good agreement with the geodetic estimates, indicating a convergence of the two approaches and resolving the long standing debate as to the sign of the tilt. These tilts differ from those used by Yin and Goddard (2013) to support a link between changing ocean circulation and coastal sea level rise
Revenue management: the impact on business-to-business relationships
Purpose - This paper explores the links between revenue management and business-to-business (B2B) relationships and explains how revenue management can both support and damage B2B relationships.
Design/methodology/approach - A single case study method was employed to conduct qualitative research into a company and its key accounts. In-depth data was collected from three divergent sources (company revenue managers, company account managers and nine of the company’s key accounts) through semi-structured interviews, observations and document studies.
Findings - The research findings reveal that from the company’s perspective, managers acknowledge that revenue management has positively influenced the process of identifying and analysing key account activities and conducting contractual decision-making with key accounts. However, from the key accounts’ perspective, revenue management practices were found to have significant negative consequences, which damage trust and undermine long-term relationships and commitment.
Research limitations - Although the research findings cannot be generalized to other service sectors because of the single-case study research method, the implications of this study suggest that the impact of revenue management practice on B2B relationships should be further investigated in a wide range of organizational and industry settings.
Practical implications - The research findings confirm the long-held assumption that revenue management can negatively affect B2B relationships. The benefits of revenue management primarily reward the company, whilst long-term B2B relationship development suffers from the short-term consequences of the company’s opportunistic behaviour.
Original/value of the paper - This paper bridges the gap in the literature between revenue management and key account management. It also explores the conceptual incompatibility between revenue management and a long-term relational approach to B2B relationships and provides evidence to support this proposition
Potentials of Mean Force for Protein Structure Prediction Vindicated, Formalized and Generalized
Understanding protein structure is of crucial importance in science, medicine
and biotechnology. For about two decades, knowledge based potentials based on
pairwise distances -- so-called "potentials of mean force" (PMFs) -- have been
center stage in the prediction and design of protein structure and the
simulation of protein folding. However, the validity, scope and limitations of
these potentials are still vigorously debated and disputed, and the optimal
choice of the reference state -- a necessary component of these potentials --
is an unsolved problem. PMFs are loosely justified by analogy to the reversible
work theorem in statistical physics, or by a statistical argument based on a
likelihood function. Both justifications are insightful but leave many
questions unanswered. Here, we show for the first time that PMFs can be seen as
approximations to quantities that do have a rigorous probabilistic
justification: they naturally arise when probability distributions over
different features of proteins need to be combined. We call these quantities
reference ratio distributions deriving from the application of the reference
ratio method. This new view is not only of theoretical relevance, but leads to
many insights that are of direct practical use: the reference state is uniquely
defined and does not require external physical insights; the approach can be
generalized beyond pairwise distances to arbitrary features of protein
structure; and it becomes clear for which purposes the use of these quantities
is justified. We illustrate these insights with two applications, involving the
radius of gyration and hydrogen bonding. In the latter case, we also show how
the reference ratio method can be iteratively applied to sculpt an energy
funnel. Our results considerably increase the understanding and scope of energy
functions derived from known biomolecular structures
