Iterative-deepening heuristic search for optimal and semi-optimal resource allocation
It is demonstrated that when iterative-deepening A asterisk (IDA asterisk) is applied to one type of resource allocation problem, it uses far less storage than A asterisk, but opens far more nodes and thus has unacceptable time complexity. This is shown to be due, at least in part, to the low-valued effective branching factor that is a characteristic of problems with real-valued cost functions. The semi-optimal, epsilon-admissible IDA asterisk sub epsilon search algorithm that the authors described was shown to open fewer nodes than both A asterisk and IDA asterisk with storage complexity proportional to the depth of the search tree
Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis of Bianchi VII_h models
We have extended the analysis of Jaffe et al. to a complete Markov chain
Monte Carlo (MCMC) study of the Bianchi type models including a
dark energy density, using 1-year and 3-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy
Probe (WMAP) cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. Since we perform the
analysis in a Bayesian framework our entire inference is contained in the
multidimensional posterior distribution from which we can extract marginalised
parameter constraints and the comparative Bayesian evidence. Treating the
left-handed Bianchi CMB anisotropy as a template centred upon the `cold-spot'
in the southern hemisphere, the parameter estimates derived for the total
energy density, `tightness' and vorticity from 3-year data are found to be:
, , with orientation ). This template is preferred by a factor of roughly
unity in log-evidence over a concordance cosmology alone. A Bianchi type
template is supported by the data only if its position on the sky is heavily
restricted. The low total energy density of the preferred template, implies a
geometry that is incompatible with cosmologies inferred from recent CMB
observations. Jaffe et al. found that extending the Bianchi model to include a
term in creates a degeneracy in the plane. We explore this region fully by MCMC and find that the
degenerate likelihood contours do not intersect areas of parameter space that 1
or 3 year WMAP data would prefer at any significance above . Thus we
can confirm that a physical Bianchi model is not responsible for
this signature.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, significant update to include more accurate

Explanation production by expert planners
Although the explanation capability of expert systems is usually listed as one of the distinguishing characteristics of these systems, the explanation facilities of most existing systems are quite primitive. Computer generated explanations are typically produced from canned text or by direct translation of the knowledge structures. Explanations produced in this manner bear little resemblance to those produced by humans for similar tasks. The focus of our research in explanation is the production of justifications for decisions by expert planning systems. An analysis of justifications written by people for planning tasks has been taken as the starting point. The purpose of this analysis is two-fold. First, analysis of the information content of the justifications will provide a basis for deciding what knowledge must be represented if human-like justifications are to be produced. Second, an analysis of the textual organization of the justifications will be used in the development of a mechanism for selecting and organizing the knowledge to be included in a computer-produced explanation. This paper describes a preliminary analysis done of justifications written by people for a planning task. It is clear that these justifications differ significantly from those that would be produced by an expert system by tracing the firing of production rules. The results from the text analysis have been used to develop an augmented phrase structured grammar (APSG) describing the organization of the justifications. The grammar was designed to provide a computationally feasible method for determining textual organization that will allow the necessary information to be communicated in a cohesive manner
Production of gaseous fuel by pyrolysis of municipal solid waste
Pilot plant tests were conducted on a simulated solid waste which was a mixture of shredded newspaper, wood waste, polyethylene plastics, crushed glass, steel turnings, and water. Tests were conducted at 1400 F in a lead-bath pyrolyser. Cold feed was deaerated by compression and was dropped onto a moving hearth of molten lead before being transported to a sealed storage container. About 80 percent of the feed's organic content was converted to gaseous products which contain over 90 percent of the potential waste energy; 12 percent was converted to water; and 8 percent remained as partially pyrolyzed char and tars. Nearly half of the carbon in the feed is converted to benzene, toluene and medium-quality fuel gas, a potential credit of over $25 per ton of solid waste. The system was shown to require minimal preprocessing and less sorting then other methods
Enhancement of the Benjamin-Feir instability with dissipation
It is shown that there is an overlooked mechanism whereby some kinds of
dissipation can enhance the Benjamin-Feir instability of water waves. This
observation is new, and although it is counterintuitive, it is due to the fact
that the Benjamin-Feir instability involves the collision of modes with
opposite energy sign (relative to the carrier wave), and it is the negative
energy perturbations which are enhanced.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures To download more papers, go to

Flight test evaluation of a method to determine the level flight performance of a propeller-driven aircraft
The overall drag of the aircraft is expressed in terms of the measured increment of power required to overcome a corresponding known increment of drag, which is generated by a towed drogue. The simplest form of the governing equations, D = delta D SHP/delta SHP, is such that all of the parameters on the right side of the equation can be measured in flight. An evaluation of the governing equations has been performed using data generated by flight test of a Beechcraft T-34B. The simplicity of this technique and its proven applicability to sailplanes and small aircraft is well known. However, the method fails to account for airframe-propulsion system
