    Deep Tree Transductions - A Short Survey

    The paper surveys recent extensions of the Long-Short Term Memory networks to handle tree structures from the perspective of learning non-trivial forms of isomorph structured transductions. It provides a discussion of modern TreeLSTM models, showing the effect of the bias induced by the direction of tree processing.     Deferring the learning for better generalization in radial basis neural networks

Vienna, Austria, August 21–25, 2001The level of generalization of neural networks is heavily dependent on the quality of the training data. That is, some of the training patterns can be redundant or irrelevant. It has been shown that with careful dynamic selection of training patterns, better generalization performance may be obtained. Nevertheless, generalization is carried out independently of the novel patterns to be approximated. In this paper, we present a learning method that automatically selects the most appropriate training patterns to the new sample to be predicted. The proposed method has been applied to Radial Basis Neural Networks, whose generalization capability is usually very poor. The learning strategy slows down the response of the network in the generalisation phase. However, this does not introduces a significance limitation in the application of the method because of the fast training of Radial Basis Neural Networks

    The Effects of Massive Substructures on Image Multiplicities in Gravitati onal Lenses

    Surveys for gravitational lens systems have typically found a significantly larger fraction of lenses with four (or more) images than are predicted by standard ellipsoidal lens models (50% versus 25-30%). We show that including the effects of smaller satellite galaxies, with an abundance normalized by the observations, significantly increases the expected number of systems with more than two images and largely explains the discrepancy. The effect is dominated by satellites with ~20% the luminosity of the primary lens, in rough agreement with the typical luminosities of the observed satellites. We find that the lens systems with satellites cannot, however, be dropped from estimates of the cosmological model based on gravitational lens statistics without significantly biasing the results.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, more discussion of sis vs sie and inclusion of uncorrelated contribution

    Applications of DFT to the theory of twentieth-century harmony

    Music theorists have only recently, following groundbreaking work by Quinn, recognized the potential for the DFT on pcsets, initially proposed by Lewin, to serve as the foundation of a theory of harmony for the twentieth century. This paper investigates pcset “arithmetic” – subset structure, transpositional combination, and interval content – through the lens of the DFT. It discusses relationships between interval classes and DFT magnitudes, considers special properties of dyads, pcset products, and generated collections, and suggest methods of using the DFT in analysis, including interpreting DFT magnitudes, using phase spaces to understand subset structure, and interpreting the DFT of Lewin’s interval function.     Local Thermal Equilibrium in Quantum Field Theory on Flat and Curved Spacetimes

    The existence of local thermal equilibrium (LTE) states for quantum field theory in the sense of Buchholz, Ojima and Roos is discussed in a model-independent setting. It is shown that for spaces of finitely many independent thermal observables there always exist states which are in LTE in any compact region of Minkowski spacetime. Furthermore, LTE states in curved spacetime are discussed and it is observed that the original definition of LTE on curved backgrounds given by Buchholz and Schlemmer needs to be modified. Under an assumption related to certain unboundedness properties of the pointlike thermal observables, existence of states which are in LTE at a given point in curved spacetime is established.     Faint X-ray Sources in the Globular Cluster Terzan 5

    We report our analysis of a Chandra X-ray observation of the rich globular cluster Terzan 5, in which we detect 50 sources to a limiting 1.0-6 keV X-ray luminosity of 3*10^{31} ergs/s within the half-mass radius of the cluster. Thirty-three of these have L_X>10^{32} ergs/s, the largest number yet seen in any globular cluster. In addition to the quiescent low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB, identified by Wijnands et al.), another 12 relatively soft sources may be quiescent LMXBs. We compare the X-ray colors of the harder sources in Terzan 5 to the Galactic Center sources studied by Muno and collaborators, and find the Galactic Center sources to have harder X-ray colors, indicating a possible difference in the populations. We cannot clearly identify a metallicity dependence in the production of low-luminosity X-ray binaries in Galactic globular clusters, but a metallicity dependence of the form suggested by Jordan et al. for extragalactic LMXBs is consistent with our data.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures (3 color).     Hole Localization in Underdoped Superconducting Cuprates Near 1/8th Doping

    Measurements of thermal conductivity versus temperature over a broad range of doping in YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} and HgBa2_2Can1_{n-1}Cun_nO2n+2+δ_{2n+2+\delta} (nn=1,2,3) suggest that small domains of localized holes develop for hole concentrations near pp=1/8. The data imply a mechanism for localization that is intrinsic to the CuO2_2-planes and is enhanced via pinning associated with oxygen-vacancy clusters.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps fig.'s, to be published, Phys.
