    Dissociative electron attachment to the H2O molecule. I. Complex-valued potential-energy surfaces for the 2B1, 2A1, and 2B2 metastable states of the water anion

    We present the results of calculations defining global, three-dimensional representations of the complex-valued potential-energy surfaces of the doublet B1, doublet A1, and doublet B2 metastable states of the water anion that underlie the physical process of dissociative electron attachment to water. The real part of the resonance energies is obtained from configuration-interaction calculations performed in a restricted Hilbert space, while the imaginary part of the energies (the widths) is derived from complex Kohn scattering calculations. A diabatization is performed on the 2A1 and 2B2 surfaces, due to the presence of a conical intersection between them. We discuss the implications that the shapes of the constructed potential-energy surfaces will have upon the nuclear dynamics of dissociative electron attachment to H2O.     Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) incidence and prevalence in Italy

    Background: Studies of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) epidemiology show regional variations of incidence and prevalence; no epidemiological studies have been carried out in Italy. Objective: To determine incidence and prevalence rates of IPF in the population of a large Italian region.Methods: in this cross-sectional study study data were collected on all patients of 18 years of age and older admitted as primary or secondary idiopathic fibrosing alveolitis (ICD9-CM 516.3) to Lazio hospitals, from 1/1/2005 to 31/12/2009, using regional hospital discharge, population and cause of death databases. Reporting accuracy was assessed on a random sample of hospital charts carrying the ICD9-CM 516.3, 516.8, 516.9 and 515 codes, by reviewing radiology and pathology findings to define cases as IPF “confident”, “possible” or “inconsistent”. Results: Annual prevalence and incidence of IPF were estimated at 25.6 per 100,000 and 7.5 per 100,000 using the ICD9-CM code 516.3 without chart audit while they were estimated at 31.6 per 100,000 and at 9,3 per 100,000 for the IPF “confident” definition after hospital chart audit. Conclusion: The data provide a first estimate of IPF incidence in Italy and indicate that incidence and prevalence in southern European regions may be similar to those observed in northern Europe and North America.     A Quantum Model of Feshbach Resonances

    We consider a quantum model of two-channel scattering to describe the mechanism of a Feshbach resonance. We perform a rigorous analysis in order to count and localize the energy resonances in the perturbative regime, i.e., for small inter-channel coupling, and in the non-perturbative one. We provide an expansion of the effective scattering length near the resonances, via a detailed study of an effective Lippmann-Schwinger equation with energy-dependent potential.Comment: 29 pages, pdfLaTe

    Role of fosfomycin tromethamine in modulating non-specific defence mechanisms in chronic uremic patients towards ESBL-producing Escherichia coli.

    Antimicrobial agents and polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) have the potential to interact in such a way that improve the therapy for infectious diseases. In immunocompromised patients highly susceptible to microbial infections with high morbidity and mortality, several metabolic and functional alterations in PMNs, mostly related to microbicidal activity, are observed. Therefore, the antibiotic of choice should have a good antimicrobial effect without impairing host defences. The aim of this study is to evaluate in vitro effects of sub-inhibiting fosfomycin tromethamine (FT) concentrations on the primary functions of PMNs from healthy subjects and immunocompromised patients (haemodialysed and renal transplant recipients), against an ESBL-producing Escherichia coli, the most common aetiological agent in urinary tract infections (UTIs). FT is considered a first line drug in the eradication of UTIs due to its appropriate antimicrobial spectrum, oral bioavailability and minimal risk of microbial resistance. Our results provide evidence that FT is able to induce enhancement of the depressed phagocytic response of PMNs from patients on chronic haemodialysis and from renal transplant recipients, restoring their primary functions in vitro against ESBL-producing E. coll All these data permit the conclusion that uremic-infected patients might additionally benefit from the immunomodulating properties of FT

    Insights into the reactivity of 2-hydroxycyclobutanones with thiols corroborated by quantum chemical DFT investigations, NMR and Raman analysis

    A general strategy for the synthesis of 2-substituted cyclobutanone sulfides via a tandem Br nsted acid-catalyzed nucleophile addition/ring contraction/C3-C4 ring expansion reaction sequence has been exploited. The procedure led to a wide panel of four-membered cyclic ketones in good to excellent yields and with broad substrate scope. Mechanistic aspects and kinetic parameters were investigated by quantum chemical DFT calculations, allowing us to rationalize the different reactivity of 2-aryl- and 2-alkyl-substituted 2-hydroxycyclobutanones towards thiol nucleophiles in reactions mediated by sulfonic acids. NMR and in situ Raman techniques were employed to better understand the reaction kinetics and parameters that affect the desired outcome

    Resonances in Models of Spin Dependent Point Interactions

    In dimension d=1,2,3d=1,2,3 we define a family of two-channel Hamiltonians obtained as point perturbations of the generator of the free decoupled dynamics. Within the family we choose two Hamiltonians, H^0\hat H_0 and \hat H_\ve, giving rise respectively to the unperturbed and to the perturbed evolution. The Hamiltonian H^0\hat H_0 does not couple the channels and has an eigenvalue embedded in the continuous spectrum. The Hamiltonian \hat H_\ve is a small perturbation, in resolvent sense, of H^0\hat H_0 and exhibits a small coupling between the channels. We take advantage of the complete solvability of our model to prove with simple arguments that the embedded eigenvalue of H^0\hat H_0 shifts into a resonance for \hat H_\ve.
