A comprehensive model to determine the effects of temperature and species fluctuations on reaction rates in turbulent reacting flows
Reaction rates in turbulent, reacting flows are reviewed. Assumed probability density functions (pdf) modeling of reaction rates is being investigated in relation to a three variable pdf employing a 'most likely pdf' model. Chemical kinetic mechanisms treating hydrogen air combustion is studied. Perfectly stirred reactor modeling of flame stabilizing recirculation regions was used to investigate the stable flame regions for silane, hydrogen, methane, and propane, and for certain mixtures thereof. It is concluded that in general, silane can be counted upon to stabilize flames only when the overall fuel air ratio is close to or greater than unity. For lean flames, silane may tend to destabilize the flame. Other factors favoring stable flames are high initial reactant temperatures and system pressure
A comprehensive model to determine the effects of temperature and species fluctuations on reaction rates in turbulent reacting flows
The use of probability theory to determine the effects of turbulent fluctuations on reaction rates in turbulent combustion systems is briefly reviewed. Results are presented for the effect of species fluctuations in particular. It is found that turbulent fluctuations of species act to reduce the reaction rates, in contrast with the temperature fluctuations previously determined to increase Arrhenius reaction rate constants. For the temperature fluctuations, a criterion is set forth for determining if, in a given region of a turbulent flow field, the temperature can be expected to exhibit ramp like fluctuations. Using the above results, along with results previously obtained, a model is described for testing the effects of turbulent fluctuations of temperature and species on reaction rates in computer programs dealing with turbulent reacting flows. An alternative model which employs three variable probability density functions (temperature and two species) and is currently being formulated is discussed as well

Heterogeneous Agglomeration
Many prior treatments of agglomeration explicitly or implicitly assume that all industries agglomerate for the same reasons. This paper uses U.K. establishment-level coagglomeration data to document substantial heterogeneity across industries in the microfoundations of agglomeration economies. It finds robust evidence of organizational and adaptive agglomeration forces as discussed by Chinitz (1961), Vernon (1960), and Jacobs (1969). These forces interact with the traditional Marshallian (1890) factors of input sharing, labor pooling, and knowledge spillovers, establishing a previously unrecognized complementarity between the approaches of Marshall and Jacobs, as well as others, to the analysis of agglomeration
Meson Exchange Currents in (e,e'p) recoil polarization observables
A study of the effects of meson-exchange currents and isobar configurations
in reactions is presented. We use a distorted wave
impulse approximation (DWIA) model where final-state interactions are treated
through a phenomenological optical potential. The model includes relativistic
corrections in the kinematics and in the electromagnetic one- and two-body
currents. The full set of polarized response functions is analyzed, as well as
the transferred polarization asymmetry. Results are presented for proton
knock-out from closed-shell nuclei, for moderate to high momentum transfer.Comment: 44 pages, 18 figures. Added physical arguments explaining the

Quaiselastic scattering from relativistic bound nucleons: Transverse-Longitudinal response
Predictions for electron induced proton knockout from the and
shells in O are presented using various approximations for the
relativistic nucleonic current. Results for the differential cross section,
transverse-longitudinal response () and left-right asymmetry
are compared at (GeV/c) corresponding to TJNAF experiment
89-003. We show that there are important dynamical and kinematical relativistic

Analysis of Meson Exchange and Isobar Currents in (e,e'p) Reactions from O-16
An analysis of the effects of meson exchange and isobar currents in exclusive
(e,e'p) processes from O-16 under quasi-free kinematics is presented. A model
that has probed its feasibility for inclusive quasi-elastic (e,e') processes is
considered. Sensitivity to final state interactions between the outgoing proton
and the residual nucleus is discussed by comparing the results obtained with
phenomenological optical potentials and a continuum nuclear shell-model
calculation. The contribution of the meson-exchange and isobar currents to the
response functions is evaluated and compared to previous calculations, which
differ notably from our results. These two-body contributions cannot solve the
puzzle of the simultaneous description of the different responses

Health information technology implementation - Impacts and policy considerations: a comparison between Israel and Portugal
The use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in health systems is increasing worldwide. While it is assumed that ICT holds great potential to make health services more efficient and grant patients more empowerment, research on these trends is at an early stage. Building on a study of the impact of ICT on physicians and patients in Israel, a Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) sponsored by COST Net in conjunction with CIES/ISCTE IUL (Portugal) facilitated a comparison of ICT in health in Israel and Portugal. The comparison focused on patient empowerment, physician behavior and the role of government in implementing ICT. The research in both countries was qualitative in nature. In-depth interviews with the Ministry of Health (MOH), the private sector, patients associations, health plans and researchers were used to collect data. Purposeful sampling was used to select respondents, and secondary sources were used for triangulation. The findings indicate that respondents in both countries feel that patient empowerment has indeed been furthered by introduction of ICT. Regarding physicians, in both countries ICT is seen as providing more information that can be used in medical decision making. Increased access of patients to web-based medical information can strengthen the role of patients in decision making and improve the physician-patient relationship, but also shift the latter in ways that may require adjustments in physician orientation. Physician uptake of ICT in both countries involves overcoming certain barriers, such as resistance to change. At the national level, important differences were found between the two countries. While in Israel, ICT was promoted and adopted by the meso level of the health system, in particular the health plans and government intervention can be found in a later stage, in Portugal the government was the main developer and national strategies were built from the beginning. These two approaches present different advantages and disadvantages. Government involvement in earlier stages could provide benefit in terms of interoperability of systems between different healthcare organizations. However, innovation could be slowed down due to government bureaucracy or lack of leadership. The work provides information in order to understand and improve ICT services. Effects of Short-Range Correlations in (e,e'p) reactions and nuclear overlap functions
A study of the effects of short-range correlations over the (e,e'p) reaction
for low missing energy in closed shell nuclei is presented. We use correlated,
quasi-hole overlap functions extracted from the asymptotic behavior of the
one-body density matrix, containing central correlations of Jastrow type, up to
first-order in a cluster expansion, and computed in the very high asymptotic
region, up to 100 fm. The method to extract the overlap functions is checked in
a simple shell model, where the exact results are known. We find that the
single-particle wave functions of the valence shells are shifted to the right
due to the short-range repulsion by the nuclear core. The corresponding
spectroscopic factors are reduced only a few percent with respect to the shell
model. However, the (e,e'p) response functions and cross sections are enhanced
in the region of the maximum of the missing momentum distribution due to
