A robust morphological classification of high-redshift galaxies using support vector machines on seeing limited images. I Method description
We present a new non-parametric method to quantify morphologies of galaxies
based on a particular family of learning machines called support vector
machines. The method, that can be seen as a generalization of the classical CAS
classification but with an unlimited number of dimensions and non-linear
boundaries between decision regions, is fully automated and thus particularly
well adapted to large cosmological surveys. The source code is available for

we use a seeing limited near-infrared ( band, ) sample observed
with WIRCam at CFHT at a median redshift of . The machine is trained
with a simulated sample built from a local visually classified sample from the
SDSS chosen in the high-redshift sample's rest-frame (i band, ) and
artificially redshifted to match the observing conditions. We use a
12-dimensional volume, including 5 morphological parameters and other
caracteristics of galaxies such as luminosity and redshift. We show that a
qualitative separation in two main morphological types (late type and early
type) can be obtained with an error lower than 20% up to the completeness limit
of the sample () which is more than 2 times better that what would
be obtained with a classical C/A classification on the same sample and indeed
comparable to space data. The method is optimized to solve a specific problem,
offering an objective and automated estimate of errors that enables a

We quantify the effects of \emph{morphological k-correction} at by
comparing morphologies measured in the K and I-bands in the COSMOS area.
Ks-band data have indeed the advantage of probing old stellar populations for
, enabling a determination of galaxy morphological types unaffected by
recent star formation. In paper I we presented a new non-parametric method to
quantify morphologies of galaxies on seeing limited images based on support
vector machines. Here we use this method to classify
selected galaxies in the COSMOS area observed with WIRCam at CFHT. The obtained
classification is used to investigate the redshift distributions and number
counts per morphological type up to and to compare to the results
obtained with HST/ACS in the I-band on the same objects from other works. We
associate to every galaxy with and a probability between 0 and
1 of being late-type or early-type. The classification is found to be reliable
up to . The mean probability is . It decreases with redshift
and with size, especially for the early-type population but remains above
. The classification is globally in good agreement with the one
obtained using HST/ACS for . Above , the I-band classification
tends to find less early-type galaxies than the Ks-band one by a factor
1.5 which might be a consequence of morphological k-correction effects.
We argue therefore that studies based on I-band HST/ACS classifications at

The spin axes orbital alignment of both stars within the eclipsing binary system V1143Cyg using the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect
Context: The Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect, a rotational effect in
eclipsing systems, provides unique insight into the relative orientation of
stellar spin axes and orbital axes of eclipsing binary systems.
Aims: Our aim is to develop a robust method to analyze the RM effect in an
eclipsing system with two nearly equally bright components. This gives access
to the orientation of the stellar rotation axes and may shed light on questions
of binary formation and evolution.
Methods: High-resolution spectra have been obtained both out of eclipse and
during the primary and secondary eclipses in the V1143Cyg system, using the
high-resolution Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph at the Lick Observatory. The
Rossiter-McLaughlin effect is analyzed in two ways: (1) by measuring the shift
of the line center of gravity during different phases of the eclipses and (2)
by analysis of the line shape change of the rotational broadening function
during eclipses.
Results: The projected axes of both stars are aligned with the orbital spin
within the observational uncertainties, with the angle of the primary rotation
axis beta_p=0.3+-1.5 deg, and the angle of the secondary rotation axis
beta_s=-1.2+-1.6 deg, thereby showing that the remaining difference between the
theoretical and observed apsidal motion for this system is not due to a
misalignment of the stellar rotation axes. Both methods utilized in this paper
work very well, even at times when the broadening profiles of the two stars

High-Power Broadly Tunable Electrooptic Frequency Comb Generator
Broadband traveling-wave electrooptic modulators made of lithium niobate have reached a high level of technological maturity. They can provide simultaneously low V pi, sustain high power (both optical and RF) and yet provide low propagation loss. By combining together these features, we present a high-power handling, broadly tunable, electrooptic frequency comb generator. The device produces between 60 and 75 lines within -10 dB bandwidth over its full tuning range-from 6 to 18 GHz- and can handle up to 1 W of optical input power. This optical frequency comb platform is very well suited for applications in RF photonics and optical communications that require independent RF and optical tuning as well as high-repetition rates but moderate bandwidth

Misaligned spin and orbital axes cause the anomalous precession of DI Herculis
The orbits of binary stars precess as a result of general relativistic
effects, forces arising from the asphericity of the stars, and forces from
additional stars or planets in the system. For most binaries, the theoretical
and observed precession rates are in agreement. One system, however -- DI
Herculis -- has resisted explanation for 30 years. The observed precession rate
is a factor of four slower than the theoretical rate, a disagreement that once
was interpreted as evidence for a failure of general relativity. Among the
contemporary explanations are the existence of a circumbinary planet and a
large tilt of the stellar spin axes with respect to the orbit. Here we report
that both stars of DI Herculis rotate with their spin axes nearly perpendicular
to the orbital axis (contrary to the usual assumption for close binary stars).
The rotationally induced stellar oblateness causes precession in the direction
opposite to that of relativistic precession, thereby reconciling the
