Peer-to-peer:is deviant behavior the norm on P2P file-sharing networks?
P2P file-sharing networks such as Kazaa, eDonkey, and Limewire boast millions of users. Because of scalability concerns and legal issues, such networks are moving away from the semicentralized approach that Napster typifies toward more scalable and anonymous decentralized P2P architectures. Because they lack any central authority, these networks provide a new, interesting context for the expression of human social behavior. However, the activities of P2P community members are sometimes at odds with what real-world authorities consider acceptable. One example is the use of P2P networks to distribute illegal pornography. To gauge the form and extent of P2P-based sharing of illegal pornography, we analyzed pornography-related resource-discovery traffic in the Gnutella P2P network. We found that a small yet significant proportion of Gnutella activity relates to illegal pornography: for example, 1.6 percent of searches and 2.4 percent of responses are for this type of material. But does this imply that such activity is widespread in the file-sharing population? On the contrary, our results show that a small yet particularly active subcommunity of users searches for and distributes illegal pornography, but it isn't a behavioral norm
Schistosome-induced portacaval haemodynamic changes in Rattus rattus are associated with translocation of adult worms to the lungs
The presence of naturally portacaval shunts has been investigated in the vasculature of normal and Schistosoma mansoni-infected Rattus rattus. Using the technique of injecting Polystyrene microspheres in the superior mesenteric vein, we demonstrated that the presence of adult schistosomes in the lungs of R. rattus was not due to an innate anomaly of the rat vasculature but resulted from the formation of portacaval shunts during infection. In rats harbouring a bisexual infection, microspheres were only detected in the lungs from week 7. The development and increasing size of the shunts were maximal between weeks 7 and 10 and coincident with the translocation of adult worms from the portal tract to the lungs. At weeks 20–25, only 1–2% of the microspheres were recovered from the lungs, suggesting that the portacaval anastomoses have regressed due to reduction in portal hypertension after worm translocation. R. rattus with a male-only schistosome infection harboured adult worms in the lungs, indicating that the development of shunts does not solely depend upon egg deposition in the liver to generate hypertension. The relationships between the presence of the schistosomes in the lungs, the portacaval shunting and the resistance to reinfection is discussed
Non-Equilibrium Phase Transitions and Domain Walls
Non-equilibrium phase transitions of a scalar field in an expanding spacetime
are discussed. These transitions are shown to lead, for appropriate potential
energy functions, to a biased choice of vacuum structure which can be
analytically described using percolation theory. The initial domain wall
networks, which form between different vacua, are evolved in time by computer
simulation and their behavior analyzed. It is shown that, unlike systems in
thermal equilibrium, domain walls formed in biased systems persist for only a
short time before decaying exponentially away. This result opens the door to a

Feasibility study of a hand guided robotic drill for cochleostomy
The concept of a hand guided robotic drill has been inspired by an automated, arm supported robotic drill recently applied in clinical practice to produce cochleostomies without penetrating the endosteum ready for inserting cochlear electrodes. The smart tactile sensing scheme within the drill enables precise control of the state of interaction between tissues and tools in real-time. This paper reports development studies of the hand guided robotic drill where the same consistent outcomes, augmentation of surgeon control and skill, and similar reduction of induced disturbances on the hearing organ are achieved. The device operates with differing presentation of tissues resulting from variation in anatomy and demonstrates the ability to control or avoid penetration of tissue layers as required and to respond to intended rather than involuntary motion of the surgeon operator. The advantage of hand guided over an arm supported system is that it offers flexibility in adjusting the drilling trajectory. This can be important to initiate cutting on a hard convex tissue surface without slipping and then to proceed on the desired trajectory after cutting has commenced. The results for trials on phantoms show that drill unit compliance is an important factor in the design
A sensory-guided surgical micro-drill

Copyright @ 2010 The Authors.This article describes a surgical robotic device that is able to discriminate tissue interfaces and other controlling parameters ahead of the drill tip. The advantage in such a surgery is that the tissues at the interfaces can be preserved. A smart tool detects ahead of the tool point and is able to control the interaction with respect to the flexing tissue, to avoid penetration or to control the extent of protrusion with respect to the position of the tissue. For surgical procedures, where precision is required, the tool offers significant benefit. To interpret the drilling conditions and the conditions leading up to breakthrough at a tissue interface, a sensing scheme is used that discriminates between the variety of conditions posed in the drilling environment. The result is a fully autonomous system, which is able to respond to the tissue type, behaviour, and deflection in real-time. The system is also robust in terms of disturbances encountered in the operating theatre. The device is pragmatic. It is intuitive to use, efficient to set up, and uses standard drill bits. The micro-drill, which has been used to prepare cochleostomies in the theatre, was used to remove the bone tissue leaving the endosteal membrane intact. This has enabled the preservation of sterility and the drilling debris to be removed prior to the insertion of the electrode. It is expected that this technique will promote the preservation of hearing and reduce the possibility of complications. Global Defects in Field Theory with Applications to Condensed Matter
We review investigations on defects in systems described by real scalar
fields in (D,1) space-time dimensions. We first work in one spatial dimension,
with models described by one and two real scalar fields, and in higher
dimensions. We show that when the potential assumes specific form, there are
models which support stable global defects for D arbitrary. We also show how to
find first-order differential equations that solve the equations of motion, and
how to solve models in D dimensions via soluble problems in D=1. We illustrate
the procedure examining specific models and showing how they may be used in
applications in different contexts in condensed matter physics, and in other

Power Spectra in Global Defect Theories of Cosmic Structure Formation
An efficient technique for computing perturbation power spectra in field
ordering theories of cosmic structure formation is introduced, enabling
computations to be carried out with unprecedented precision. Large scale
simulations are used to measure unequal time correlators of the source stress
energy, taking advantage of scaling during matter and radiation domination, and
causality, to make optimal use of the available dynamic range. The correlators
are then re-expressed in terms of a sum of eigenvector products, a
representation which we argue is optimal, enabling the computation of the final
power spectra to be performed at high accuracy. Microwave anisotropy and matter
perturbation power spectra for global strings, monopoles, textures and
