    Heralded generation of entangled photon pairs

    Entangled photons are a crucial resource for quantum communication and linear optical quantum computation. Unfortunately, the applicability of many photon-based schemes is limited due to the stochastic character of the photon sources. Therefore, a worldwide effort has focused in overcoming the limitation of probabilistic emission by generating two-photon entangled states conditioned on the detection of auxiliary photons. Here we present the first heralded generation of photon states that are maximally entangled in polarization with linear optics and standard photon detection from spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We utilize the down-conversion state corresponding to the generation of three photon pairs, where the coincident detection of four auxiliary photons unambiguously heralds the successful preparation of the entangled state. This controlled generation of entangled photon states is a significant step towards the applicability of a linear optics quantum network, in particular for entanglement swapping, quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography and scalable approaches towards photonics-based quantum computing

    This article explores the emotional impact on the viewer of disturbing and disorienting images of infant-caregiver relationality in four “melo-horror” films: Imitation of Life (Stahl, 1934), Imitation of Life (Sirk, 1959), The Brood (Cronenberg, 1979), and Beloved (Demme, 1998). Comparing some of these filmic images with the infant performances of “disorganized” attachment styles captured on videotape by attachment researchers such as Mary Main, the author argues that the filmed audiovisual enactment of relational trauma, whether in the context of scientific research or cinematic art, offers the spectator an opportunity to work consciously and unconsciously with representations of unbearable psychic and psychosocial experience—both her own and that of others—that may hitherto have been thought unrepresentable or simply not thought at all

    Multidimensional Signals and Analytic Flexibility: Estimating Degrees of Freedom in Human-Speech Analyses

    Recent empirical studies have highlighted the large degree of analytic flexibility in data analysis that can lead to substantially different conclusions based on the same data set. Thus, researchers have expressed their concerns that these researcher degrees of freedom might facilitate bias and can lead to claims that do not stand the test of time. Even greater flexibility is to be expected in fields in which the primary data lend themselves to a variety of possible operationalizations. The multidimensional, temporally extended nature of speech constitutes an ideal testing ground for assessing the variability in analytic approaches, which derives not only from aspects of statistical modeling but also from decisions regarding the quantification of the measured behavior. In this study, we gave the same speech-production data set to 46 teams of researchers and asked them to answer the same research question, resulting in substantial variability in reported effect sizes and their interpretation. Using Bayesian meta-analytic tools, we further found little to no evidence that the observed variability can be explained by analysts’ prior beliefs, expertise, or the perceived quality of their analyses. In light of this idiosyncratic variability, we recommend that researchers more transparently share details of their analysis, strengthen the link between theoretical construct and quantitative system, and calibrate their (un)certainty in their conclusions

    Operational Events Noted for Power Uprated Plants and Potential Safety Implicationss

    ABSTRACT During the past several decades the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has reviewed and approved in excess of 50 licensee requests for power uprates, most of which have been in the range of 1-6% increase. More recently the agency has received License Amendment Requests (LARs) for significant power increases, in the range of 15-20%, which are under current review. Although each uprate request is evaluated to assure that current regulatory requirements are satisfied, concerns have developed regarding the safety implications of power uprates of this magnitude for the aging population of US-LWR plants. Such concerns stem from operational events noted for plants having received power uprates, including failure to fully-insert control rods in high-power/high-burnup PWR fuel assemblies, piping failures, and reactivity anomalies. Of particular concern is the potential for synergistic/compounding effects, for example higher core power when combined with system/component degradation via plant aging for plant license renewal, or higher power in conjunction with fuel life extensions to elevated burnup.     Glucose and pH microprofiles in UASB aggregates were interpreted with respect to the population distribution of fermentative and methanogenic bacteria. In order to map the activity distribution of these bacteria, microprofiles were measured with different substrates (glucose, propionate and acetate) and at varying buffer capacities of the medium. The measurements were compared to calcd. microprofiles, in which the spatial location of the activities was varied. The results suggested an inhomogeneous activity distribution in the aggregates investigated: fermentative were located dominantly at the outer 200-300 mm whereas methanogens were homogeneously distributed over the aggregate.
