    Cold adaptation and replicable microbial community development during long-term low temperature anaerobic digestion treatment of synthetic sewage

    The development and, activity of a cold-adapting microbial community was monitored during low temperature anaerobic digestion (LtAD) treatment of wastewater. Two replicate hybrid anaerobic sludge bed-fixed-film reactors treated a synthetic sewage wastewater at 12°C, at organic loading rates of 0.25–1.0 kg Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) m−3 d−1, over 889 days. The inoculum was obtained from a full-scale AD reactor, which was operated at 37˚C. Both LtAD reactors readily degraded the influent with COD removal efficiencies regularly exceeding 78% for both the total and soluble COD fractions. The biomass from both reactors was sampled temporally and tested for activity against hydrolytic and methanogenic substrates at 12˚C and 37˚C. Data indicated that significantly enhanced low-temperature hydrolytic and methanogenic activity developed in both systems. For example, the hydrolysis rate constant (K) at 12°C had increased 20–30-fold by comparison to the inoculum by day 500. Substrate affinity also increased for hydrolytic substrates at low temperature. Next generation sequencing demonstrated that a shift in community structure occurred over the trial, involving a 1-log-fold change in 25 SEQS (OTU-free approach) from the inoculum.     Effects of positive airway pressure therapy on cardiovascular and metabolic markers in males with obstructive sleep apnea

    Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with cardiovascular/ metabolic complications. Some analytical parameters (homocysteine, glycemic and lipidic profiles) are recognized markers of these consequences. Limited data is available on the association of these markers and OSAS’s severity/response to positive airway pressure therapy (PAP). Material and methods: In this prospective study we analyzed polysomnographic and analytical data of male patients admitted to sleep laboratory. The aim was to evaluate metabolic/cardiovascular markers in snorers and OSAS patients, to relate with sleep parameters and PAP response. One-hundred and three patients were included, and 73 (71%) were OSAS patients. OSAS patients were similar to snorers except for higher body mass index (BMI) and dyslipidemia. Severe OSAS patients showed higher glycemia, HbA1c, insulin, and insulin resistance, and lower HDL cholesterol in comparison to mild---moderate (p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.05, respectively). Glycemic profile and triglycerides were slightly correlated with OSAS severity. 46 OSAS patients were submitted to 6 months of PAP, with a statistical decrease in mean values of homocysteine, glycemia, total and LDL cholesterol(p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively), and in glycemia and LDL cholesterol in severe grouponly (p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively).Results: This study demonstrated an association between glucose metabolism parameters andtriglycerides with OSAS severity underlying the complexity of the process leading to cardiovas-cular/metabolic complications in this disorder. Moreover, homocysteine, glycemic and lipidicprofiles changed significantly after 6 months of PAP therapy in OSAS, supporting its cardiovas-cular and metabolic protective effect.Conclusion: Our study has reinforced the importance of analytical cardiovascular/metabolicevaluation as complementary tool of diagnosis/treatment response in OSAS.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Serum levels of magnesium in sudden cardiac deaths among people with schizophrenia: hit or miss?

    Schizophrenia is a devastating mental disorder, affecting cognitive, emotional, and behavioral conditions, ability to work, social functioning, family stability and self-esteem of the patient. People with schizophrenia show a two to three-fold increased risk to die prematurely than those without schizophrenia. Understanding the mechanisms behind sudden cardiac death in individuals with schizophrenia is a key to prevention. Although different mechanisms may be related, there are clear indications that cardiac abnormalities play a potential role. Some antipsychotics may be associated with cardiovascular adverse events, e.g., QT interval prolongation, metabolic dysfunction, blood pressure and heart rate alterations. Magnesium (Mg) abnormalities may lead to various morphological and functional dysfunctions of the heart and low levels of serum Mg are considered to be at high risk for sudden cardiac death. As low serum Mg is associated with detrimental effects on the heart and that antipsychotic-treated schizophrenia patients frequently affect the heart rate, possibly, these factors together must change the normal functioning of the heart and consequently being able to culminate in a catastrophic event

    Assessing composition in modeling approaches

    Modeling approaches are based on various paradigms, e.g., aspect-oriented, feature-oriented, object-oriented, and logic-based. Modeling approaches may cover requirements models to low-level design models, are developed for various purposes, use various means of composition, and thus are difficult to compare. However, such comparisons are critical to help practitioners know under which conditions approaches are most applicable, and how they might be successfully generalized and combined to achieve end-to-end methods. This paper reports on work done at the 2nd International Comparing Modeling Approaches (CMA) workshop towards the goal of identifying potential comprehensive modeling methodologies with a particular emphasis on composition: (i) an improved set of comparison criteria; (ii) 19 assessments of modeling approaches based on the comparison criteria and a common, focused case study
