Can an independent organisation such as unites Pro (the union of information technology enabled services professionals) represent employees' interests and effectively work towards protecting their rights and improving their working conditions? A survey of unites members indicates that they identify with the need for such an organisation to deal with poor supervisory and managerial treatment, concerns for employee safety, grievances related to pay and workload, and even the indignities of favouritism

    RAT J0455+1305: A rare hybrid pulsating subdwarf B star

    We present results on the second-faintest pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) star known, RAT J0455+1305, derived from photometric data obtained in 2009. It shows both short and long periods oscillations, theoretically assigned as pressure and gravity modes. We identify six short-period frequencies (with one being a combination) and six long-period frequencies. This star is the fourth hybrid sdB star discovered so far which makes it of special interest as each type of mode probes a different part of the star. This star is similar to the sdB hybrid pulsator Balloon 090100001 in that it exhibits short-period mode groupings, which can be used to identify pulsation parameters and constrain theoretical models.Comment: published in MNRA

    J08069+1527: A newly discovered high amplitude, hybrid subdwarf B pulsator

    We present our discovery of a new hybrid pulsating subdwarf B star, J08069+1527. The effective temperature and surface gravity of 28,500±\pm400\,K and 5.37±\pm0.04\,dex, respectively, place this object inside the instability strip and also among other pulsating hot subdwarfs of a hybrid nature, right next to another fascinating star: Balloon\,090100001. From this proximity, we anticipated this star could pulsate in both high and low frequency modes. Indeed, our analysis of photometric data confirmed our prediction. We detected two peaks in the high frequency region and two other peaks at low frequencies. In addition, the amplitude of the dominant mode is very high and comparable to the dominant peaks in other hybrid subdwarf B stars. Since this star is bright, we performed time-series low resolution spectroscopy. Despite a low signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, we were able to detect the main peak from these data. All our results strongly indicate that J08069+1527 is a high amplitude pulsating hot subdwarf B star of hybrid nature. By analogy to the other pulsating sdB star, we judge that the dominant mode we detected here has radial nature. Future stellar modeling should provide us with quite good constrains as p- and g-modes presented in this star are driven in different parts of its interior.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Excitation of the 3.071mm Hyperfine Line in Li-Like 57-Fe in Astrophysical Plasmas

    As noted first by Sunyaev & Churazov (1984), the 3.071 mm hyperfine line from 57Fe+23^{57}Fe^{+23} might be observable in astrophysical plasmas. We assess the atomic processes which might contribute to the excitation of this line. We determine the intensity of the hyperfine line from an isothermal, coronal plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium and for a coronal plasma cooling isobarically due to its own radiation. Comparisons of the hyperfine line to other lines emitted by the same ion, Fe+23^{+23}, are shown to be useful for deriving the isotopic fraction of 57^{57}Fe. We calculate the ratios of the hyperfine line to the 2s--2p EUV lines at 192 \AA and 255 \AA, and the 2s--3p X-ray doublet at 10.6 \AA.Comment: 28 pages text+figures, Accepted to ApJ in Jan 98, also at http://www.astro.virginia.edu/~nld2n/research.htm

[email protected] Abstract OBJECTIVE: In the Euro-Lupus Nephritis Trial (ELNT), 90 patients with lupus nephritis were randomly assigned to a high-dose intravenous cyclophosphamide (IV CYC) regimen (6 monthly pulses and 2 quarterly pulses with escalating doses) or a low-dose IV CYC regimen (6 pulses of 500 mg given at intervals of 2 weeks), each of which was followed by azathioprine (AZA). After a median followup of 41 months, a difference in efficacy between the 2 regimens was not observed. The present analysis was undertaken to extend the followup and to identify prognostic factors. METHODS: Renal function was prospectively assessed quarterly in all 90 patients except 5 who were lost to followup. Survival curves were derived using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: After a median followup of 73 months, there was no significant difference in the cumulative probability of end-stage renal disease or doubling of the serum creatinine level in patients who received the low-dose IV CYC regimen versus those who received the high-dose regimen. At long-term followup, 18 patients (8 receiving low-dose and 10 receiving high-dose treatment) had developed permanent renal impairment and were classified as having poor long-term renal outcome. We demonstrated by multivariate analysis that early response to therapy at 6 months (defined as a decrease in serum creatinine level and proteinuria <1 g/24 hours) was the best predictor of good long-term renal outcome. CONCLUSION: Long-term followup of patients from the ELNT confirms that, in lupus nephritis, a remission-inducing regimen of low-dose IV CYC followed by AZA achieves clinical results comparable with those obtained with a high-dose regimen.     The Unseen Population of F to K-type Companions to Hot Subdwarf Stars

    We present a method to select hot subdwarf stars with A to M-type companions using photometric selection criteria. We cover a wide range in wavelength by combining GALEX ultraviolet data, optical photometry from the SDSS and the Carlsberg Meridian telescope, near-infrared data from 2MASS and UKIDSS. We construct two complimentary samples, one by matching GALEX, CMC and 2MASS, as well as a smaller, but deeper, sample using GALEX, SDSS and UKIDSS. In both cases, a large number of composite subdwarf plus main-sequence star candidates were found. We fit their spectral energy distributions with a composite model in order to estimate the subdwarf and companion star effective temperatures along with the distance to each system. The distribution of subdwarf effective temperature was found to primarily lie in the 20,000 - 30,000 K regime, but we also find cooler subdwarf candidates, making up ~5-10 per cent. The most prevalent companion spectral types were seen to be main-sequence stars between F0 and K0, while subdwarfs with M-type companions appear much rarer. This is clear observational confirmation that a very efficient first stable Roche-lobe overflow channel appears to produce a large number of subdwarfs with F to K-type companions.     Hot subdwarfs from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey: II. Atmospheric parameters of subdwarf O stars

    We address the origin and evolutionary status of hot subdwarf stars by studying the optical spectral properties of 58 subdwarf O (sdO) stars. Combining them with the results of our previously studied subdwarf B (sdB) stars, we aim at investigating possible evolutionary links. We analyze high-resolution ESO VLT UVES spectra from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY). Effective temperatures, gravities, and helium abundances are determined simultaneously by fitting the profiles of H and He lines using dedicated synthetic spectra in NLTE. Evidence for cool companions to 8 sdOs as well as a binary consisting of two sdO stars is found. A correlation between He abundances and the presence of carbon and/or nitrogen lines emerges: below solar He abundance, no sdO shows C or N lines. In contrast, C and/or N lines are present in ALL sdOs with super- solar He abundance. We thus use the solar He abundance to divide our sample into He-deficient and He-enriched sdOs. While He-deficient sdOs are scattered in a wide range of the Teff-log(g)-diagram, most of the He-enriched sdOs cluster in a narrow region at Teff = 40,000 ... 50,000K and log(g)=5.5 ... 6.0. An evolu- tionary link between sdBs and sdOs appears plausible only for the He-deficient sdOs indicating that they are the likely successors to sdBs. The properties of He-enriched sdOs cannot be explained with canonical single star evolutionary models. Alternative scenarios (late hot flasher) as well as for binary evolution (white dwarf merger; post-RGB evolution) are tested. While we regard the post-RGB scenario as inappropriate, the white dwarf merger and the late hot flasher scenarios remain viable to explain the origin of He-enriched sdOs.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics accepte

    Compact stellar systems in the Fornax cluster: a UV perspective

    In recent years, increasing evidence for chemical complexity and multiple stellar populations in massive globular clusters (GCs) has emerged, including extreme horizontal branches (EHBs) and UV excess. Our goal is to improve our understanding of UV excess in the regime of both massive GCs and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs). To this end, we use deep archival GALEX data of the central Fornax cluster to measure NUV and FUV magnitudes of UCDs and massive GCs. We obtain NUV photometry for a sample of 35 compact objects with -13.5<M_V<-10 mag. Of those, 21 objects also have FUV photometry. Roughly half of the sources fall into the UCD luminosity regime (M_V <=-11 mag). We find that seven out of 17 massive Fornax GCs exhibit a NUV excess with respect to expectations from stellar population models, even for models with enhanced Helium abundance. This suggests that not only He-enrichment has contributed to forming the EHB population of these GCs. The GCs extend to stronger UV excess than GCs in M31 and massive GCs in M87, at the 97% confidence level. Most of the UCDs with FUV photometry also show evidence for UV excess, but their UV colours can be matched by isochrones with enhanced Helium abundances and old ages 12-14 Gyrs. We find that Fornax compact objects with X-ray emission detected from Chandra images are almost disjunct in colour from compact objects with GALEX UV detection, with only one X-ray source among the 35 compact objects. However, since this source is one of the three most UV bright GCs, we cannot exclude that the physical processes causing X-ray emission also contribute to some of the observed UV excess.Comment: Research Note, 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    INTUITION is the European Network of Excellence on virtual reality and virtual environments applications for future workspaces. The purpose of the network is to gather expertise from partner members and determine the future research agenda for the development and use of virtual reality (VR) technologies. The working group on Education and Training (WG2.9) is specifically focused on understanding how VR is being used to support learning in educational and industrial contexts. This paper presents four case examples of VR technology currently in use or development for training in industry. Conclusions are drawn concerning future development of VR training applications and barriers that need to be overcome
