Comparison of Hadronic Interaction Models at Auger Energies
The three hadronic interaction models DPMJET 2.55, QGSJET 01, and SIBYLL 2.1,
implemented in the air shower simulation program CORSIKA, are compared in the
energy range of interest for the Pierre Auger experiment. The model dependence
of relevant quantities in individual hadronic interactions and air showers is
investigated.Comment: Contribution to XII Int. Symp. on Very High Energy Cosmic Ray

Residential treatment for combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder: Identifying trajectories of change and predictors of treatment response
Background
Combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be a difficult condition to treat and has been associated with serious medical and economic issues among U.S. military veterans. Distinguishing between treatment responders vs. non-responders in this population has become an important public health priority. This study was conducted to identify pre-treatment characteristics of U.S. veterans with combat-related PTSD that might contribute to favorable and unfavorable responses to high value treatments for this condition. Method
This study focused on 805 patients who completed a VHA PTSD residential program between 2000 and 2007. These patients completed the PTSD Clinical Checklist at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and a four-month follow-up assessment. Latent growth curve analysis (LCGA) was incorporated to determine trajectories of changes in PTSD across these assessments and whether several key clinical concerns for this population were associated with their treatment responses. Study Findings
LCGA indicated three distinct trajectories in PTSD outcomes and identified several clinical factors that were prospectively linked with changes in veterans\u27 posttraumatic symptomatology. When compared to a group with high PTSD symptom severity that decreased over the program but relapsed at follow-up (41%), the near half (48.8%) of the sample with an improving trajectory had less combat exposure and superior physical/mental health. However, when compared to a minority (10.2%) with relatively low symptomatology that also remained somewhat stable, patients in the improving group were younger and also reported greater combat exposure, poorer physical/mental health status, and more problems with substance abuse before the start of treatment. Conclusions
Findings suggest that veterans are most likely to benefit from residential treatment in an intermediate range of symptoms and risk factors, including PTSD symptom severity, history of combat exposure, and comorbid issues with physical/mental health. Addressing these factors in an integrative manner could help to optimize the effectiveness of treatments of combat-related PTSD in many cases
Study on initial geometry fluctuations via participant plane correlations in heavy ion collisions: part II
Further investigation of the participant plane correlations within a Glauber
model framework is presented, focusing on correlations between three or four
participant planes of different order. A strong correlation is observed for
which is a reflection of the
elliptic shape of the overlap region. The correlation between the corresponding
experimental reaction plane angles can be easily measured. Strong correlations
of similar geometric origin are also observed for
,
,
,
,
, and
, which are also measurable.
Experimental measurements of the corresponding reaction plane correlators in
heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC may improve our understanding of the
physics underlying the measured higher order flow harmonics.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
The eccentricity in heavy-ion collisions from Color Glass Condensate initial conditions
The eccentricity in coordinate-space at midrapidity of the overlap zone in
high-energy heavy-ion collisions predicted by the -factorization
formalism is generically larger than expected from scaling with the number of
participants. We provide a simple qualitative explanation of the effect which
shows that it is not caused predominantly by edge effects. We also show that it
is quite insensitive to ``details'' of the unintegrated gluon distribution
functions such as the presence of leading-twist shadowing and of an extended
geometric scaling window. The larger eccentricity increases the azimuthal
asymmetry of high transverse momentum particles. Finally, we point out that the
longitudinal structure of the Color Glass Condensate initial condition for
hydrodynamics away from midrapidity is non-trivial but requires understanding
of large- effects.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures; v3: added note regarding Qs2~n_part versus

Direct measurement of the flow field around swimming microorganisms
Swimming microorganisms create flows that influence their mutual interactions
and modify the rheology of their suspensions. While extensively studied
theoretically, these flows have not been measured in detail around any
freely-swimming microorganism. We report such measurements for the microphytes
Volvox carteri and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The minute ~0.3% density excess
of V. carteri over water leads to a strongly dominant Stokeslet contribution,
with the widely-assumed stresslet flow only a correction to the subleading
source dipole term. This implies that suspensions of V. carteri have features
similar to suspensions of sedimenting particles. The flow in the region around
C. reinhardtii where significant hydrodynamic interaction is likely to occur
differs qualitatively from a "puller" stresslet, and can be described by a
simple three-Stokeslet model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Impact of Uncertainties in Hadron Production on Air-Shower Predictions
At high energy, cosmic rays can only be studied by measuring the extensive
air showers they produce in the atmosphere of the Earth. Although the main
features of air showers can be understood within a simple model of successive
interactions, detailed simulations and a realistic description of particle
production are needed to calculate observables relevant to air shower
experiments. Currently hadronic interaction models are the main source of
uncertainty of such simulations. We will study the effect of using different
hadronic models available in CORSIKA and CONEX on extensive air shower
predictions.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, to appear in the proceedings of International

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions
The method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is developped
appropriately for the study of relativistic heavy ion collision processes. In
order to describe the flow of a high energy but low baryon number density
fluid, the entropy is taken as the SPH base. We formulate the method in terms
of the variational principle. Several examples show that the method is very
promising for the study of hadronic flow in RHIC physics.Comment: 14 pages, 8figure
