    Effect of wearing whole body compression garments on cardiovascular function using ECG signals

    The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of wearing whole body compression garments (WBCGs) on cardiovascular function of running trainers. Eight non-athletes (age: 25.1±3.8 years, height: 165.9±8.3 cm; weight: 61.4±13.7 kg) performed an incremental test followed by 30 minutes running on a treadmill, from 6 km.h-1 to 11 km.h-1 with correct size-compression garments (CCGs), undersize-compression garments (UCGs) and non-compression garments (NCGs). During the exercise, electrocardiogram (ECG) signals were collected between each completed speed by wearable sensors. There was a significant difference in heart rate (HR, p<0.05) between CCGs and NCGs from the velocity of 7km.h-1 onwards. Moreover, the group that wore UCGs has some significant effects on QT intervals and corrected QT at 10km.h-1 and 11km.h-1 (p<0.05). The utilization of WBCGs in a running test may influence the cardiovascular function of wearers. Based on the results of longer QTc, UCGs may cause an adverse effect on performance. Essentially, CCGs should be recommended for wearing during exercise due to the effects of lower HR

    Free fall and harmonic oscillations: Analyzing trampoline jumps

    © 2015 IOP Publishing Ltd. Trampolines can be found in many gardens and also in some playgrounds. They offer an easily accessible vertical motion that includes free fall. In this work, the motion on a trampoline is modelled by assuming a linear relation between force and deflection, giving harmonic oscillations for small amplitudes. An expression for the cycle-time is obtained in terms of maximum normalized force from the trampoline and the harmonic frequency. A simple expression is obtained for the ratio between air-time and harmonic period, and the maximum g-factor. The results are compared to experimental results, including accelerometer data showing 7g during bounces on a small trampoline in an amusement park play area. Similar results are obtained on a larger garden trampoline, and even larger accelerations have been measured for gymnastic trampolines

    Influence of voluntary standards and design modifications on trampoline injury in Victoria, Australia

Purpose To examine the influence of the voluntary Australian trampoline standard (AS 4989-2006) and market-driven design modifications on relevant trampoline injuries. Methods Trend and intervention analysis on frequencies and proportions of hospital-treated trampoline-related injury in Victoria, Australia, extracted from the Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset from 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2013. The injuries relevant to the AS were contact with spring and frame, and multipleuser injury. Falls from trampolines were relevant for netted trampolines, a market-driven modification. Results Frequency of all trampoline injuries increased by 11.4% (95% CI 10.0% to 11.7%) on average each year. Spring and frame, and fall injuries increased to a lesser extent (8.7%, 95% CI 6.9% to 9.8% and 7.3%, 95% CI 5.8% to 8.3%, respectively). Multiple-user injuries increased by 21.0% (95% CI 16.3% to 21.9%). As a proportion of all trampoline injuries, spring and frame injury and falls injury decreased, while multipleuser injuries increased. The intervention analysis showed no significant change in spring and frame injuries associated with the AS (p=0.17). A significant increase was found for multiple-user injuries (p=0.01), in particular for the 0-year to 4-year age group (p<0.0001), post 2007. Conclusions There was little evidence for an effect of the voluntary standard on spring and frame injury and none for multiple-user injury. Netted trampolines appear to be associated with a decrease in falls from trampolines but an increase in injuries to multiple users. A mandated trampoline safety standard and a safety campaign including warnings about multiple users is recommended. Continued monitoring of injury data will be required

    Accelerometers used in the measurement of jerk, snap, and crackle

Higher derivatives of motion are rarely considered when measuring vibration. This paper presents a novel usage of a triaxial accelerometer to measure acceleration and use these data to explain jerk and higher derivatives of motion. We are all familiar with the terms displacement, velocity and acceleration but few of us are familiar with the term jerk and even fewer of us are familiar with the terms snap and crackle. We experience velocity when we are displaced with respect to time and acceleration when we change our velocity. We do not feel velocity, but rather the change of velocity i.e. acceleration which is brought about by the force exerted on our body. Similarly, we feel jerk and higher derivatives when the force on our body experiences changes abruptly with respect to time. The results from a gymnastic trampolinist where the acceleration data were collected at 100 Hz using a device attached to the chest are presented and discussed. In particular the higher derivates of the Force total equation are extended and discussed, namely: ijerk∙d3x/dt3, rsnap∙d4x/dt4, ncrackle∙d5x/dt5 etc

    Vibration measurement as a tool to solve a murder

    This paper will discuss a novel use of vibration measurement used to assist the NSW Police Force to solve the ‘pogo stick’ murder. The authors were approached by the Homicide Squad regarding a suspicious death of a 7-year boy at Oatley in May 2013. The child had reportedly fallen from a pogo stick and suffered significant head injuries. The child had not been provided with medical attention after the fall and died some 24 hours later. The incident occurred inside a small unit which was used as a music recording studio. The studio is on the first level of a larger business complex. The studio consisted of a recording room, a lounge room, and a kitchenette. The child fell in the lounge room. At the time of the alleged incident the mother was in the kitchenette, and the accused was in the recording room. According to the accused, he had headphones on and was listening to loud music when he 'felt' the vibration of the thud. Kodi Maybir was found guilty of murder in November 2015
