Fungal solid state fermentation on agro-industrial wastes for acid wastewater decolourization in a continuous flow packed-bed bioreactor
This study was aimed at developing a process of solid state fermentation (SSF) with the fungi Pleurotus ostreatus and Trametes versicolor on apple processing residues for wastewater decolorization. Both fungi were able to colonize apple residues without any addition of nutrients, material support or water. P. ostreatus produced the highest levels of laccases (up to 9 U g-1 of dry matter) and xylanases (up to 80 U g-1 of dry matter). A repeated batch decolorization experiment was set up with apple residues colonized by P. ostreatus, achieving 50% decolorization and 100% detoxification after 24 h, and, adding fresh wastewater every 24 h, a constant decolorization of 50% was measured for at least 1 month. A continuous decolorization experiment was set up by a packed-bed reactor based on colonized apple residues achieving a performance of 100 mg dye L-1 day-1 at a retention time of 50
Las enfermedades populares en la cultura española actual
Cabe suponer que cuando se goza de acceso universal a la sanidad, como sucede
en la España contemporánea, la creencia en enfermedades populares termina desapareciendo.
Sin embargo, una investigación de campo, desarrollada en el Suroeste de
Andalucía en la primavera de 2004, indica que aún resta en la generalidad de la población
un considerable conocimiento de un cierto número de enfermedades populares, y
en concreto de la denominada «Mal de ojo». A partir de los datos obtenidos mediante
un grupo de discusión con mujeres que curan estas enfermedades, la realización de una
serie de entrevistas a personas o bien muy familiarizadas con el Mal de ojo, o bien profanas
en esta enfermedad pero que creen en ella, y finalmente una revisión de materiales
de archivo. Este artículo describe un modelo actual explicativo del Mal de ojo y propone
algunas hipótesis sobre la pervivencia de la creencia en esta y otras enfermedades
populares.It might be assumed that in a situation of universal access to biomedical health care,
as is the case in contemporary Spain, folk illness beliefs would have vanished. Field research conducted in the spring of 2004 in Andalusia showed considerable knowledge
in the general population about a number of folk illnesses, including mal de ojo (evil
eye). Based on a focus group conducted with traditional healers, as well as in-depth
interviews with specialists in mal de ojo, in-depth interviews with lay people who believe
in this illness, and review of archival materials, this paper describes the contemporary
explanatory model of mal de ojo and offers some hypotheses as to why beliefs
in this illness, and other folk illnesses, persist
Beltrami equations with coefficient in the Sobolev space W1,p
We study the removable singularities for solutions to the Beltrami equation ∂f = µ ∂f, where µ is a bounded function, kµk∞ ≤ K−1 K+1 < 1, and such that µ ∈ W1,p for some p ≤ 2. Our results are based on an extended version of the well known Weyl's lemma, asserting that distributional solutions are actually true solutions. Our main result is that quasiconformal mappings with compactly supported Beltrami coefficient µ ∈ W1,p, 2K2 K2+1 < p ≤ 2, preserve compact sets of σ-finite length and vanishing analytic capacity, even though they need not be bilipschitz

Interaction of perceptual grouping and crossmodal temporal capture in tactile apparent-motion
Previous studies have shown that in tasks requiring participants to report the direction of apparent motion, task-irrelevant mono-beeps can "capture'' visual motion perception when the beeps occur temporally close to the visual stimuli. However, the contributions of the relative timing of multimodal events and the event structure, modulating uni- and/or crossmodal perceptual grouping, remain unclear. To examine this question and extend the investigation to the tactile modality, the current experiments presented tactile two-tap apparent-motion streams, with an SOA of 400 ms between successive, left-/right-hand middle-finger taps, accompanied by task-irrelevant, non-spatial auditory stimuli. The streams were shown for 90 seconds, and participants' task was to continuously report the perceived (left-or rightward) direction of tactile motion. In Experiment 1, each tactile stimulus was paired with an auditory beep, though odd-numbered taps were paired with an asynchronous beep, with audiotactile SOAs ranging from -75 ms to 75 ms. Perceived direction of tactile motion varied systematically with audiotactile SOA, indicative of a temporal-capture effect. In Experiment 2, two audiotactile SOAs-one short (75 ms), one long (325 ms)-were compared. The long-SOA condition preserved the crossmodal event structure (so the temporal-capture dynamics should have been similar to that in Experiment 1), but both beeps now occurred temporally close to the taps on one side (even-numbered taps). The two SOAs were found to produce opposite modulations of apparent motion, indicative of an influence of crossmodal grouping. In Experiment 3, only odd-numbered, but not even-numbered, taps were paired with auditory beeps. This abolished the temporal-capture effect and, instead, a dominant percept of apparent motion from the audiotactile side to the tactile-only side was observed independently of the SOA variation. These findings suggest that asymmetric crossmodal grouping leads to an attentional modulation of apparent motion, which inhibits crossmodal temporal-capture effects
Effectiveness of Chitosan Films Impregnated With Ciprofloxacin for the Prophylaxis of Osteomyelitis in Open Fractures: An Experimental Study in Rats
Background: The systemic antimicrobial prophylaxis is the standard treatment in the prevention of osteomyelitis after open fractures, with topical application of antimicrobials as an alternative due to their high concentrations at the site of the fracture, low systemic concentrations and fewer side effects.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of prophylaxis of osteomyelitis through experimental model of open fractures with the use of chitosan films, whether or not impregnated with ciprofloxacin.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 24 Holtzman rats were distributed into 4 groups of 6 rats each. The CT (control of treatment) group: an open fracture model treated with systemic antimicrobial; the IC (infection control) group: an open fracture untreated model; the C (chitosan) group: an open fracture model treated using a chitosan film; and the CA (chitosan with antimicrobial) group: an open fracture model treated using a chitosan film impregnated with antimicrobial. After 3 weeks the animals were killed by an overdose of anesthetic, and a fragment osseous was removed for histological and microbiological analysis. The comparisons between the groups considered significant values of P ≤ 0.05.
Results: In cultures of the CT group, there was less bacterial growth compared to the results of the cultures of the IC (P = 0.005), C (P = 0.005) and CA (P = 0.009) groups. The inflammation was lower in the CT group compared to the IC (P = 0.014), C (P = 0.001) and CA (P = 0.007) groups.
Conclusions: In this experimental model of open fracture, the chitosan film pure or impregnated with ciprofloxacin was not effective in the prophylaxis of osteomyelitis
Optimal lower exponent for the higher gradient integrability of solutions to two-phase elliptic equations in two dimensions
We study the higher gradient integrability of distributional solutions u to the equation div(σ∇u) = 0 in dimension two, in the case when the essential range of σ consists of only two elliptic matrices, i.e., σ ∈ {σ1,σ2} a.e. in Ω. In [9], for every pair of elliptic matrices σ1 and σ2 exponents pσ1,σ2 ∈ (2,+∞) and qσ1,σ2 ∈ (1,2) have been found so that if u ∈ W1,qσ1,σ2(Ω) is solution to the elliptic equation then ∇u ∈ Lpσ1,σ2(Ω) and the optimality of the upper exponent pσ1,σ2 has been proved. In this paper we complement the above result by proving the optimality of the lower exponent qσ1,σ2. Precisely, we show that for every arbitrarily small δ, one can find a particular microgeometry, i.e. an arrangement of the sets σ-1(σ1) and σ-1(σ2), for which there exists a solution u to the corresponding elliptic equation such that ∇u ∈ Lqσ1,σ2-δ, but ∇u Ɇ Lqσ1,σ2-δ. The existence of such optimal microgeometries is achieved by convex integration methods, adapting to the present setting the geometric constructions provided in [2] for the isotropic case
Novel role for the innate immune receptor toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in the regulation of the wnt signaling pathway and photoreceptor apoptosis
Recent evidence has implicated innate immunity in regulating neuronal survival in the brain during stroke and other neurodegenerations. Photoreceptors are specialized light-detecting neurons in the retina that are essential for vision. In this study, we investigated the role of the innate immunity receptor TLR4 in photoreceptors. TLR4 activation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) significantly reduced the survival of cultured mouse photoreceptors exposed to oxidative stress. With respect to mechanism, TLR4 suppressed Wnt signaling, decreased phosphorylation and activation of the Wnt receptor LRP6, and blocked the protective effect of the Wnt3a ligand. Paradoxically, TLR4 activation prior to oxidative injury protected photoreceptors, in a phenomenon known as preconditioning. Expression of TNFα and its receptors TNFR1 and TNFR2 decreased during preconditioning, and preconditioning was mimicked by TNFα antagonists, but was independent of Wnt signaling. Therefore, TLR4 is a novel regulator of photoreceptor survival that acts through the Wnt and TNFα pathways. © 2012 Yi et al
