    Existence of positive solutions of a superlinear boundary value problem with indefinite weight

    We deal with the existence of positive solutions for a two-point boundary value problem associated with the nonlinear second order equation u+a(x)g(u)=0u''+a(x)g(u)=0. The weight a(x)a(x) is allowed to change its sign. We assume that the function g ⁣:[0,+[Rg\colon\mathopen{[}0,+\infty\mathclose{[}\to\mathbb{R} is continuous, g(0)=0g(0)=0 and satisfies suitable growth conditions, so as the case g(s)=spg(s)=s^{p}, with p>1p>1, is covered. In particular we suppose that g(s)/sg(s)/s is large near infinity, but we do not require that g(s)g(s) is non-negative in a neighborhood of zero. Using a topological approach based on the Leray-Schauder degree we obtain a result of existence of at least a positive solution that improves previous existence theorems.Comment: 12 pages, 4 PNG figure

    Importance of Spin-Orbit Coupling in Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Perovskites for Photovoltaic Applications

    International audienceThree-dimensional (3D) hybrid perovskites CH3NH3PbX3 (X = Br, I) have recently been suggested as new key materials for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) leading to a new class of hybrid semiconductor photovoltaic cells (HSPC). Thanks to density functional theory calculations, we show that the band gap of these compounds is dominated by a giant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the conduction-band (CB). At room temperature, direct and isotropic optical transitions are associated to a spin-orbit split-off band related to the triply degenerated CB of the cubic lattice without SOC. Due to the strong SOC, the electronic states involved in the optical absorption are only slightly perturbed by local distortions of the lattice. In addition, band offset calculations confirm that CH3NH3PbX3/TiO2 is a reference material for driving electrons toward the electrode in HSPC. Two-dimensional (2D) hybrids are also suggested to reach further flexibility for light conversion efficiency. Our study affords the basic concepts to reach the level of knowledge already attained for optoelectronic properties of conventional semiconductors

    Increasing distributed generation hosting capacity in distributionsystems via optimal coordination of electric vehicle aggregators

    This work presents a novel strategy, designed from the distribution system operator view-point, aimed at estimating the hosting capacity in electric distribution systems when con-trollable plug-in electric vehicles are in place. The strategy seeks to determine the maxi-mum wind-based distributed generation penetration by coordinating, on a forecast basis,the dispatch of electric vehicle aggregators, the operation of voltage regulation devices,and the active and reactive distributed generation power injections. Different from previ-ous works, the proposed approach leverages controllable features of electric vehicles takinginto account technical electric vehicle characteristics, driving behaviour of electric vehicleowners, and electric vehicle energy requirements to accomplish their primary purpose. Thepresented strategy is formulated as a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer linear program-ming problem. The first stage maximises the distributed generation installed capacity, whilethe second stage minimises the energy losses during the planning horizon. Probability den-sity functions are used to describe the uncertainties associated with renewable distributedgeneration, conventional demand, and electric vehicle driving patterns. Obtained resultsshow that controlling the power dispatched to electric vehicle aggregators can increase thedistributed generation hosting capacity by up to 15% (given a 40% electric vehicle penetra-tion), when compared to an uncontrolled electric vehicle approac

    Extended-Spectrum-Beta-Lactamases, AmpC Beta-Lactamases and Plasmid Mediated Quinolone Resistance in Klebsiella spp. from Companion Animals in Italy

    We report the genetic characterization of 15 Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) and 4 isolates of K. oxytoca (KO) from clinical cases in dogs and cats and showing extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC) resistance. Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC genes, plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) and co-resistances were investigated. Among KP isolates, ST101 clone was predominant (8/15, 53%), followed by ST15 (4/15, 27%). ST11 and ST340, belonging to Clonal Complex (CC)11, were detected in 2012 (3/15, 20%). MLST on KP isolates corresponded well with PFGE results, with 11 different PFGE patterns observed, including two clusters of two (ST340) and four (ST101) indistinguishable isolates, respectively. All isolates harbored at least one ESBL or AmpC gene, all carried on transferable plasmids (IncR, IncFII, IncI1, IncN), and 16/19 were positive for PMQR genes (qnr family or aac(6')-Ib-cr). The most frequent ESBL was CTX-M-15 (11/19, 58%), detected in all KP ST101, in one KP ST15 and in both KP ST340. blaCTX-M-15 was carried on IncR plasmids in all but one KP isolate. All KP ST15 isolates harbored different ESC resistance genes and different plasmids, and presented the non-transferable blaSHV-28 gene, in association with blaCTX-M-15, blaCTX-M-1 (on IncR, or on IncN), blaSHV-2a (on IncR) or blaCMY-2 genes (on IncI1). KO isolates were positive for blaCTX-M-9 gene (on IncHI2), or for the blaSHV-12 and blaDHA-1 genes (on IncL/M). They were all positive for qnr genes, and one also for the aac(6')-Ib-cr gene. All Klebsiella isolates showed multiresistance towards aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, trimethoprim and amphenicols, mediated by strA/B, aadA2, aadB, ant (2")-Ia, aac(6')-Ib, sul, tet, dfr and cat genes in various combinations. The emergence in pets of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella with ESBL, AmpC and PMQR determinants, poses further and serious challenges in companion animal therapy and raise concerns for possible bi-directional transmission between pets and humans, especially at household level

    High-efficiency micromorph silicon solar cells with in-situ intermediate reflector deposited on various rough LPCVD ZnO

    Light management using intermediate reflector layers (IRL) and advanced front transparent conductive oxide (TCO) morphologies is needed to rise the short-circuit current density (Jsc) of micromorph tandem solar cells above 14 mA/cm2. For micromorph cells deposited on surface-textured ZnO layers grown by low-pressure chemical vapour deposition (LPCVD), we study the interplay between the front TCO layer and the IRL and its impact on fill factor and current matching conditions. The key role of the angular distribution of the light scattered by the front LPCVD ZnO layer is highlighted. A micromorph cell with 11.1% stabilized conversion efficiency is demonstrated. By increasing the bottom cell thickness and adding an antireflection coating, a Jsc value of 13.8 mA/cm2 is achieved. This remarkably high Jsc yields 13.3% initial conversion efficiency

    Gestational age acceleration is associated with epigenetic biomarkers of prenatal physiologic stress exposure

    BACKGROUND: Physiological maternal stress response, such as imbalance in the glucocorticoid pathway and immune system seems to be mediated by DNA methylation (DNAm) and might translate intrauterine stress exposures into phenotypic changes in a sex-specific manner. DNAm in specific sites can also predict newborn gestational age and gestational age acceleration (GAA). GAA occurs when the predicted biological age is higher than the chronological age. In adults, poor health outcomes related to this deviance are well documented and raise questions for the interpretation and prediction in early stages of life. Boys seem to be more vulnerable to intrauterine stress exposure than girls; however, the mechanisms of adaptive sex-specific responses are still unclear. We hypothesize that intrauterine stress exposure is associated with GAA and could be different in boys and girls if inflammatory or glucocorticoid pathways exposure is considered. RESULTS: Using the Western Region Birth Cohort (ROC-Sao Paulo, Brazil) (n = 83), we calculated DNAm age and GAA from cord blood samples. Two epigenetic risk scores were calculated as an indirect proxy for low-grade inflammation (i-ePGS) and for glucocorticoid exposure (GES). Multivariate linear regression models were applied to investigate associations of GAA with prenatal exposures. The i-ePGS and GES were included in different models with the same co-variates considering sex interactions. The first multivariate model investigating inflammatory exposure (adj. R(2) = 0.31, p = < 0.001) showed that GAA was positively associated with i-ePGS (CI, 0.26-113.87, p = 0.049) and negative pregnancy-related feelings (CI, 0.04-0.48 p = 0.019). No sex interaction was observed. The second model investigating glucocorticoid exposure (adj. R(2) = 0.32, p = < 0.001) showed that the higher was the GAA was associated with a lower the lower was the GES in girls (CI, 0.04-2.55, p = 0.044). In both models, maternal self-reported mental disorder was negatively associated with GAA. CONCLUSION: Prenatal epigenetic score of exposure to low-grade inflammatory was a predictor of GAA for both sexes. Glucocorticoid epigenetic score seems to be more important to GAA in girls. This study supports the evidence of sex-specificity in stress response, suggesting the glucocorticoid as a possible pathway adopted by girls to accelerate the maturation in an adverse condition
