Branes with Background Fields in Boundary State Formalism
Interaction of branes in presence of internal gauge fields is considered by
using the boundary state formalism. This approach enables us to consider the
problems that are not easily accessible to the canonical approach via open
strings. The effects of compactification of some of the dimensions on tori are
also discussed. Also we study the massless state contribution on this
interaction.Comment: 12 pp. No figure
Number of arrhythmia beats determination in Holter electrocardiogram: How many clusters?
Holter signals correspond to long-term electrocardiograph (ECG) registers. Manual inspection of such signals is difficult because of the enormous quantity of beats involved. Throughout the literature several methods of automatically detecting and separating the significant beats using unsupervised learning were proposed. An important part of the unsupervised learning problem is determining the number of constituent clusters which best describe the data. In this paper we concentrate on the problem of the number of arrhythmia beats-clusters selection presented in Holter ECG. We apply and compare several criteria for assessing the number of clusters and we show that, with a Gaussian mixture model, the approach is able to select 'an optimal' number of arrhythmia beats and so partition a Holter ECG. The following criteria has been examined: Bayesian selection method, Akaike's information criteria, minimum description length, minimum message length, fuzzy hyper volume, evidence density and partition coefficient. We conclude that only minimum description length and Bayesian selection method are suitable for our real-world electrocardiogram data. In order to validate the procedure, an experimental comparative study is carried out, utilizing records from the MIT database
Mixed Branes Interaction in Compact Spacetime
We present a general description of two mixed branes interactions. For this
we consider two mixed branes with dimensions p_1 and p_2, in external field
B_{\mu\nu} and arbitrary gauge fields A^1_{\alpha_1} and A^2_{\alpha_2} on the
world volume of them, in spacetime in which some of its directions are
compactified on circles with different radii. Some examples are considered to
clear these general interactions. Finally contribution of the massless states
on the interactions is extracted. Closed string with mixed boundary conditions
and boundary state formalism, provide useful tools for calculation of these
interactions.Comment: 22 pages, to appear in Nucl. Phys.
Modular anomaly equations in N =2* theories and their large-N limit
We propose a modular anomaly equation for the prepotential of the N=2* super Yang-Mills theory on R^4 with gauge group U(N) in the presence of an Omega-background. We then study the behaviour of the prepotential in a large-N limit, in which N goes to infinity with the gauge coupling constant kept fixed. In this regime instantons are not suppressed. We focus on two representative choices of gauge theory vacua, where the vacuum expectation values of the scalar fields are distributed either homogeneously or according to the Wigner semi-circle law. In both cases we derive an all-instanton exact formula for the prepotential. As an application, we show that the gauge theory partition function on S^4 at large N localises around a Wigner distribution for the vacuum expectation values leading to a very simple expression in which the instanton contribution becomes independent of the coupling constant
Two Moving-Angled 1-Branes with Electric Fields in a Partially Compact Spacetime
In this article we consider two -branes at angle in the presence of the
background electric fields, in a partially compact spacetime. The branes have
motions along a common direction that is perpendicular to both of them. Using
the boundary state formalism, we calculate their interaction amplitude. Some
special cases of this interaction will be studied in detail.Comment: 10 pages, no figure, Late
Slope Instability along the northeastern Iberian and Balearic continental margins
This paper gathers the available information on submarine landslides identified in the northeastern Iberian continental margin and presents new data on both already known landslides and new, previously unknown ones. The 2,000 km2, 26 km3 resulting deposit of the BIG'95 debris flow in the Ebro margin; the 4 up to 16 km2, 0.4 km3 Eivissa slides in the Eivissa Channel; the 2 up to 65.6 km2, 1.46 km3 Barcelona slides in the shallow southern Catalan margin; and the western Gulf of Lions debris flow in the deep north Catalan margin are presented. This compilation is completed with several other previously undescribed small-scale mass-wasting deposits together with those observed in the Balearic Promontory. The amount and widespreading of submarine landslide deposits in the northern Iberian margins demonstrate that these margins are not an exception to the common occurence of these kind of structures worldwide, and gives an idea on this phenomena recurrence even in margins considered moderately quiet, in terms of seismicity
Comparing star formation models with interferometric observations of the protostar NGC 1333 IRAS 4A. I. Magnetohydrodynamic collapse models
Observations of dust polarized emission toward star forming regions trace the
magnetic field component in the plane of the sky and provide constraints to
theoretical models of cloud collapse. We compare high-angular resolution
observations of the submillimeter polarized emission of the low-mass
protostellar source NGC 1333 IRAS 4A with the predictions of three different
models of collapse of magnetized molecular cloud cores. We compute the Stokes
parameters for the dust emission for the three models. We then convolve the
results with the instrumental response of the Submillimeter Array observation
toward IRAS 4A. Finally, we compare the synthetic maps with the data, varying
the model parameters and orientation, and we assess the quality of the fit by a
\chi^2 analysis. High-angular resolution observations of polarized dust
emission can constraint the physical properties of protostars. In the case of
IRAS 4A, the best agreements with the data is obtained for models of collapse
of clouds with mass-to-flux ratio >2 times the critical value, initial uniform
magnetic field of strength ~0.5 mG, and age of the order of a few 10^4 yr since
the onset of collapse. Magnetic dissipation, if present, is found to occur
below the resolution level of the observations. Including a previously measured
temperature profile of IRAS 4A leads to a more realistic morphology and
intensity distribution. We also show that ALMA has the capability of
distinguishing among the three different models adopted in this work. Our
results are consistent with the standard theoretical scenario for the formation
of low-mass stars, where clouds initially threaded by large-scale magnetic
fields become unstable and collapse, trapping the field in the nascent
protostar and the surrounding circumstellar disk. In the collapsing cloud, the
dynamics is dominated by gravitational and magnetic forces.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy And Astrophysics. 14 pages, 11

Instanton effects in N=1 brane models and the Kahler metric of twisted matter
We consider locally consistent systems of magnetized D9 branes on an
orbifolded six-torus which support N=1 gauge theories. In such realizations,
the matter multiplets arise from "twisted" strings connecting different stacks
of branes. The introduction of Euclidean 5 branes (E5) wrapped on the
six-dimensional compact space leads to instanton effects. For instance, if the
system is engineered so as to yield SQCD, a single E5 brane may account for the
ADS/TVY superpotential. We discuss the subtle interplay that exists between the
annuli diagrams with an E5 boundary and the holomorphicity properties of the
effective low-energy action of the N=1 theory. The consistency of this picture
allows to obtain information on the Kahler metric of the chiral matter
multiplets arising from twisted strings.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figures. V2: improved discussion, clarifyng comments and
