The UN in the lab
We consider two alternatives to inaction for governments combating terrorism, which we term Defense and Prevention. Defense consists of investing in resources that reduce the impact of an attack, and generates a negative externality to other governments, making their countries a more attractive objective for terrorists. In contrast, Prevention, which consists of investing in resources that reduce the ability of the terrorist organization to mount an attack, creates a positive externality by reducing the overall threat of terrorism for all. This interaction is captured using a simple 3×3 “Nested Prisoner’s Dilemma” game, with a single Nash equilibrium where both countries choose Defense. Due to the structure of this interaction, countries can benefit from coordination of policy choices, and international institutions (such as the UN) can be utilized to facilitate coordination by implementing agreements to share the burden of Prevention. We introduce an institution that implements a burden-sharing policy for Prevention, and investigate experimentally whether subjects coordinate on a cooperative strategy more frequently under different levels of cost sharing. In all treatments, burden sharing leaves the Prisoner’s Dilemma structure and Nash equilibrium of the game unchanged. We compare three levels of burden sharing to a baseline in a between-subjects design, and find that burden sharing generates a non-linear effect on the choice of the efficient Prevention strategy and overall performance. Only an institution supporting a high level of mandatory burden sharing generates a significant improvement in the use of the Prevention strategy
Global Gene Expression Analysis Identifies Age-Related Differences in Knee Joint Transcriptome during the Development of Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis in Mice.
Aging and injury are two major risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA). Yet, very little is known about how aging and injury interact and contribute to OA pathogenesis. In the present study, we examined age- and injury-related molecular changes in mouse knee joints that could contribute to OA. Using RNA-seq, first we profiled the knee joint transcriptome of 10-week-old, 62-week-old, and 95-week-old mice and found that the expression of several inflammatory-response related genes increased as a result of aging, whereas the expression of several genes involved in cartilage metabolism decreased with age. To determine how aging impacts post-traumatic arthritis (PTOA) development, the right knee joints of 10-week-old and 62-week-old mice were injured using a non-invasive tibial compression injury model and injury-induced structural and molecular changes were assessed. At six-week post-injury, 62-week-old mice displayed significantly more cartilage degeneration and osteophyte formation compared with young mice. Although both age groups elicited similar transcriptional responses to injury, 62-week-old mice had higher activation of inflammatory cytokines than 10-week-old mice, whereas cartilage/bone metabolism genes had higher expression in 10-week-old mice, suggesting that the differential expression of these genes might contribute to the differences in PTOA severity observed between these age groups
Area selection for conservation of Mexican mammals
Three sets of priority cells for mammal conservation in Mexico were identified using distributional data. A complementarity approach was implemented through linear integer programming. The minimum set of sites required for the representation of each mammal species varied between 38 (5.4%) grid cells for at least one occurrence, 110 (15.6%) grid cells for at least three occurrences, and 173 (24.5%) grid cells for at least five occurrences. The complementary analyses mainly highlighted three regions of particular concern for mammal conservation in Mexico: (i) the trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and natural provinces of the Pacific Coast, (ii) Sierra Madre del Sur and the Highlands of Chiapas, and (iii) the northern portion of the Sierra Madre Occidental. The results reported here did not indicate absolute priority locations for conservation activities, but rather identified locations warranting further investigation at finer resolutions more appropriate to such activit
Unification of the conditional probability and semiclassical interpretations for the problem of time in quantum theory
We show that the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation (TDSE) is the
phenomenological dynamical law of evolution unraveled in the classical limit
from a timeless formulation in terms of probability amplitudes conditioned by
the values of suitably chosen internal clock variables, thereby unifying the
conditional probability interpretation (CPI) and the semiclassical approach for
the problem of time in quantum theory. Our formalism stems from an exact
factorization of the Hamiltonian eigenfunction of the clock plus system
composite, where the clock and system factors play the role of marginal and
conditional probability amplitudes, respectively. Application of the Variation
Principle leads to a pair of exact coupled pseudoeigenvalue equations for these
amplitudes, whose solution requires an iterative self-consistent procedure. The
equation for the conditional amplitude constitutes an effective "equation of
motion" for the quantum state of the system with respect to the clock
variables. These coupled equations also provide a convenient framework for
treating the back-reaction of the system on the clock at various levels of
approximation. At the lowest level, when the WKB approximation for the marginal
amplitude is appropriate, in the classical limit of the clock variables the
TDSE for the system emerges as a matter of course from the conditional
equation. In this connection, we provide a discussion of the characteristics
required by physical systems to serve as good clocks. This development is seen
to be advantageous over the original CPI and semiclassical approach since it
maintains the essence of the conventional formalism of quantum mechanics,
admits a transparent interpretation, avoids the use of the Born-Oppenheimer

A Micro Molecular Bipolar Outflow From HL Tau
We present detailed geometry and kinematics of the inner outflow toward HL
Tau observed using Near Infrared Integral Field Spectograph (NIFS) at the
Gemini-North 8-m Observatory. We analyzed H2 2.122 um emission and [Fe II]
1.644 um line emission as well as the adjacent continuum observed at a <0".2
resolution. The H2 emission shows (1) a bubble-like geometry to the northeast
of the star, as briefly reported in the previous paper, and (2) faint emission
in the southwest counterflow, which has been revealed through careful analysis.
The emission on both sides of the star show an arc 1".0 away from the star,
exhibiting a bipolar symmetry. Different brightness and morphologies in the
northeast and southwest flows are attributed to absorption and obscuration of
the latter by a flattened envelope and a circumstellar disk. The H2 emission
shows a remarkably different morphology from the collimated jet seen in [Fe II]
emission. The positions of some features coincide with scattering continuum,
indicating that these are associated with cavities in the dusty envelope. Such
properties are similar to millimeter CO outflows, although the spatial scale of
the H2 outflow in our image (~150 AU) is strikingly smaller than the mm
outflows, which often extend over 1000-10000 AU scales. The position-velocity
diagram of the H2 and [Fe II] emission do not show any evidence for kinematic
interaction between these flows. All results described above support the
scenario that the jet is surrounded by an unseen wide-angled wind, which
interacts with the ambient gas and produce the bipolar cavity and shocked H2

HAT-P-15b: A 10.9-day Extrasolar Planet Transiting a Solar-type Star
We report the discovery of HAT-P-15b, a transiting extrasolar planet in the
`period valley', a relatively sparsely-populated period regime of the known
extrasolar planets. The host star, GSC 2883-01687, is a G5 dwarf with V=12.16.
It has a mass of 1.01+/-0.04 M(Sun), radius of 1.08+/-0.04 R(Sun), effective
temperature 5568+/-90 K, and metallicity [Fe/H] = +0.22+/-0.08. The planetary
companion orbits the star with a period 10.863502+/-0.000027 days, transit
epoch Tc = 2454638.56019+/-0.00048 (BJD), and transit duration 0.2285+/-0.0015
days. It has a mass of 1.946+/-0.066 M(Jup), and radius of 1.072+/-0.043 R(Jup)
yielding a mean density of 1.96+/-0.22 g/cm3. At an age of 6.8+/-2.1 Gyr, the
planet is H/He-dominated and theoretical models require about 2% (10 M(Earth))
worth of heavy elements to reproduce its measured radius. With an estimated
equilibrium temperature of 820 K during transit, and 1000 K at occultation,
HAT-P-15b is a potential candidate to study moderately cool planetary

TMC-1C: an accreting starless core
We have mapped the starless core TMC-1C in a variety of molecular lines with
the IRAM 30m telescope. High density tracers show clear signs of
self-absorption and sub-sonic infall asymmetries are present in N2H+ (1-0) and
DCO+ (2-1) lines. The inward velocity profile in N2H+ (1-0) is extended over a
region of about 7,000 AU in radius around the dust continuum peak, which is the
most extended ``infalling'' region observed in a starless core with this
tracer. The kinetic temperature (~12 K) measured from C17O and C18O suggests
that their emission comes from a shell outside the colder interior traced by
the mm continuum dust. The C18O (2-1) excitation temperature drops from 12 K to
~10 K away from the center. This is consistent with a volume density drop of
the gas traced by the C18O lines, from ~4x10^4 cm^-3 towards the dust peak to
~6x10^3 cm^-3 at a projected distance from the dust peak of 80" (or 11,000 AU).
The column density implied by the gas and dust show similar N2H+ and CO
depletion factors (f_D < 6). This can be explained with a simple scenario in
which: (i) the TMC-1C core is embedded in a relatively dense environment (H2
~10^4 cm^-3), where CO is mostly in the gas phase and the N2H+ abundance had
time to reach equilibrium values; (ii) the surrounding material (rich in CO and
N2H+) is accreting onto the dense core nucleus; (iii) TMC-1C is older than
3x10^5 yr, to account for the observed abundance of N2H+ across the core
(~10^-10 w.r.t. H2); and (iv) the core nucleus is either much younger (~10^4
yr) or ``undepleted'' material from the surrounding envelope has fallen towards

Simultaneous monitoring of the photometric and polarimetric activity of the young star PV Cep in the optical/near-infrared bands
We present the results of a simultaneous monitoring, lasting more than 2
years, of the optical and near-infrared photometric and polarimetric activity
of the variable protostar PV Cep. During the monitoring period, an outburst has
occurred in all the photometric bands, whose declining phase (J
3 mag) lasted about 120 days. A time lag of 30 days between
optical and infrared light curves has been measured and interpreted in the
framework of an accretion event. This latter is directly recognizable in the
significant variations of the near-infrared colors, that appear bluer in the
outburst phase, when the star dominates the emission, and redder in declining
phase, when the disk emission prevails. All the observational data have been
combined to derive a coherent picture of the complex morphology of the whole PV
Cep system, that, in addition to the star and the accretion disk, is composed
also by a variable biconical nebula. In particular, the mutual interaction
between all these components is the cause of the high value of the polarization
( 20%) and of its fluctuations. The observational data concur to
indicate that PV Cep is not a genuine EXor star, but rather a more complex
object; moreover the case of PV Cep leads to argue about the classification of
other recently discovered young sources in outburst, that have been considered,
maybe over-simplifying, as EXor.Comment: Accepted for publication on Ap
CARMA Large Area Star Formation Survey: Observational Analysis of Filaments in the Serpens South Molecular Cloud
We present the N2H+(J=1-0) map of the Serpens South molecular cloud obtained
as part of the CARMA Large Area Star Formation Survey (CLASSy). The
observations cover 250 square arcminutes and fully sample structures from 3000
AU to 3 pc with a velocity resolution of 0.16 km/s, and they can be used to
constrain the origin and evolution of molecular cloud filaments. The spatial
distribution of the N2H+ emission is characterized by long filaments that
resemble those observed in the dust continuum emission by Herschel. However,
the gas filaments are typically narrower such that, in some cases, two or three
quasi-parallel N2H+ filaments comprise a single observed dust continuum
filament. The difference between the dust and gas filament widths casts doubt
on Herschel ability to resolve the Serpens South filaments. Some molecular
filaments show velocity gradients along their major axis, and two are
characterized by a steep velocity gradient in the direction perpendicular to
the filament axis. The observed velocity gradient along one of these filaments
was previously postulated as evidence for mass infall toward the central
cluster, but these kind of gradients can be interpreted as projection of

Medical students learning styles in Latin American and Spanish universities: relation with geographical and curricular contexts
Objetivo. Determinar si los estilos de aprendizaje (EA) de los estudiantes de medicina se correlacionan con el contexto geográfico, con el contexto curricular o con el nivel de la carrera.
Sujetos y métodos. El estudio se realizó en 490 estudiantes de las Escuelas de Medicina de las Universidades de Chile (Santiago, Chile), Nacional de Cuyo (Mendoza, Argentina), San Francisco Xavier (Sucre, Bolivia), Zaragoza y País Vasco (España). Se aplicó el cuestionario Honey-Alonso, que valora la preferencia por cada uno de cuatro EA: activo, reflexivo, teórico y pragmático. También se evaluó el EA de acuerdo al modelo de Kolb.
Resultados. Al relacionar el EA con el contexto geográfico se observó que mientras los estudiantes de universidades españolas muestran un estilo preferentemente asimilador, siguiendo la denominación de Kolb, para Chile fue el acomodador y para Bolivia los estudiantes se distribuyen entre los estilos asimilador y divergente. Al comparar la distribución de los EA durante el tercer curso de medicina en dos facultades que poseen diferente currículo, no se observaron diferencias significativas. Los EA en una Facultad de Medicina con un currículo basado en asignaturas (Chile) no mostraron diferencias en los tres cursos del estudio (1.o, 3.o y 5.o), siendo preferentes los estilos reflexivo y teórico.
Conclusiones. El estudio permitió establecer diferencias significativas entre los estilos de aprendizaje de los estudiantes de Medicina en relación con el contexto geográfico, más que con los diferentes currículos, o a lo largo de los distintos cursos de la carrera.Aim. To establish a correlation between medical student learning styles (LS) and the geographical context, the curricular context and different academic levels.
Subjects and methods. The study was performed in 490 undergraduate students from Medical Schools of the Universities of Chile (Santiago, Chile), Nacional de Cuyo (Mendoza, Argentina), San Francisco Xavier (Sucre, Bolivia), Zaragoza and País Vasco (Spain). The instrument used was the Honey-Alonso learning style questionnaire that assesses the student preference for one of four LS: active, reflexive, theoretic and pragmatic. In addition, LS according to the Kolb inventory were also assessed.
Results. Using the Kolb inventory, significant differences were found when the LS were correlated with the geographical context. While Spanish students showed a high preference for the assimilator style of learning, Chilean students resulted to be mainly accommodators, and Bolivian students were both assimilators and divergent. Comparing the LS distribution during the third course in two universities with different curricula (problem and lecture based learning), there were no significant differences. LS of medical students from a Medical School with a lecture based curriculum (University of Chile) were not significantly different during the first, the third and the fifth level of their undergraduate students. They showed a significant preference for reflexive and theoretic styles of learning.
Conclusions. The present study allowed demonstrating that significant differences among the styles of learning of medical students correlated with the geographical context more than with the different curricula, or along the different courses of the career.Fil: Diaz Veliz, G..
