    Irreversible and reversible modes of operation of deterministic ratchets

    We discuss a problem of optimization of the energetic efficiency of a simple rocked ratchet. We concentrate on a low-temperature case in which the particle's motion in a ratchet potential is deterministic. We show that the energetic efficiency of a ratchet working adiabatically is bounded from above by a value depending on the form of ratchet potential. The ratchets with strongly asymmetric potentials can achieve ideal efficiency of unity without approaching reversibility. On the other hand we show that for any form of the ratchet potential a set of time-protocols of the outer force exist under which the operation is reversible and the ideal value of efficiency is also achieved. The mode of operation of the ratchet is still quasistatic but not adiabatic. The high values of efficiency can be preserved even under elevated temperatures

    Plasma propulsion simulation using particles

    This perspective paper deals with an overview of particle-in-cell / Monte Carlo collision models applied to different plasma-propulsion configurations and scenarios, from electrostatic (E x B and pulsed arc) devices to electromagnetic (RF inductive, helicon, electron cyclotron resonance) thrusters, with an emphasis on plasma plumes and their interaction with the satellite. The most important elements related to the modeling of plasma-wall interaction are also presented.     Modeling of the plasma jet of a stationary plasma thruster

    We have developed a two-dimensional hybrid fluid – particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collisions (PIC- MCC) model to study the plume of a stationary plasma thruster. The model is based on a fluid description of the electrons (the electron density follows a Boltzmann distribution) and a particle description of the ion and neutral transport. Collisions between heavy species are taken into account with a Monte Carlo method. The electric field is obtained from Poisson's equation or from the quasineutrality assumption. We first show that the results from the PIC-MCC model are close to the results of a more time-consuming direct simulation Monte Carlo approach. We then compare the model predictions of the plume density and ion energy distribution with experimental measurements.     Interobserver reliability of classification and characterization of proximal humeral fractures: a comparison of two and three-dimensional CT

    Interobserver reliability for the classification of proximal humeral fractures is limited. The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that interobserver reliability of the AO classification of proximal humeral fractures, the preferred treatment, and fracture characteristics is the same for two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) computed tomography (CT). Members of the Science of Variation Group--fully trained practicing orthopaedic and trauma surgeons from around the world--were randomized to evaluate radiographs and either 2-D CT or 3-D CT images of fifteen proximal humeral fractures via a web-based survey and respond to the following four questions: (1) Is the greater tuberosity displaced? (2) Is the humeral head split? (3) Is the arterial supply compromised? (4) Is the glenohumeral joint dislocated? They also classified the fracture according to the AO system and indicated their preferred treatment of the fracture (operative or nonoperative). Agreement among observers was assessed with use of the multirater kappa (κ) measure. Interobserver reliability of the AO classification, fracture characteristics, and preferred treatment generally ranged from "slight" to "fair." A few small but statistically significant differences were found. Observers randomized to the 2-D CT group had slightly but significantly better agreement on displacement of the greater tuberosity (κ = 0.35 compared with 0.30, p < 0.001) and on the AO classification (κ = 0.18 compared with 0.17, p = 0.018). A subgroup analysis of the AO classification results revealed that shoulder and elbow surgeons, orthopaedic trauma surgeons, and surgeons in the United States had slightly greater reliability on 2-D CT, whereas surgeons in practice for ten years or less and surgeons from other subspecialties had slightly greater reliability on 3-D CT. Proximal humeral fracture classifications may be helpful conceptually, but they have poor interobserver reliability even when 3-D rather than 2-D CT is utilized. This may contribute to the similarly poor interobserver reliability that was observed for selection of the treatment for proximal humeral fractures.     ID-HALL, a new double stage Hall thruster design. I. Principle and hybrid model of ID-HALL

    International audienceIn Hall thrusters, ions are extracted from a quasineutral plasma by the electric field induced by the local drop of electron conductivity associated with the presence of a magnetic barrier. Since the electric field is used both to extract and accelerate ions and to generate the plasma, thrust and specific impulse are not independent in a Hall thruster. There is a need for versatile thrusters that can be used for a variety of maneuvers, i.e., that can operate either at high thrust or at high specific impulse for a given power. The double stage Hall thruster (DSHT) design could allow a separate control of ionization and acceleration, and hence separate control of thrust and specific impulse. In the DSHT configuration, a supplementary plasma source (ionization stage), independent of the applied voltage, is added and placed upstream of the magnetic barrier (acceleration stage). The DSHT concept is also well adapted to the use of alternative propellants, lighter and with a less efficient ionization than xenon. Several designs of double stage Hall thrusters have been proposed in the past, but these attempts were not really successful. In this paper, we present a brief review of the main DSHT designs described in the literature, we discuss the relevance of the DSHT concept, and, on the basis of simple physics arguments and simulation results, we propose a new design, called ID-HALL (Inductive Double stage HALL thruster). In this design, the ionization stage is a magnetized inductively coupled RF plasma. The inductive coil is inside the central cylinder of the thruster and located nearby the acceleration stage.     Submillimetric GPS distance measurement over short baselines: noise mitigation by global robust estimation

    The potential use of GPS technology for precise length determination is currently a topic of extensive research. A prior work was dedicated to submillimetric length determination over short baselines and under ideal conditions of data availability and a clear environment. This paper presents a new computation method suited to the less favourable working conditions that are usually encountered in practice. It is based on both robust estimation theory and the use of an ambiguity-free estimation method.     A Structural Basis for Inhibition of the Complement Initiator Protease C1r by Lyme Disease Spirochetes

    Complement evasion is a hallmark of extracellular microbial pathogens such as Borreliella burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Lyme disease spirochetes express nearly a dozen outer surface lipoproteins that bind complement components and interfere with their native activities. Among these, BBK32 is unique in its selective inhibition of the classical pathway. BBK32 blocks activation of this pathway by selectively binding and inhibiting the C1r serine protease of the first component of complement, C1. To understand the structural basis for BBK32-mediated C1r inhibition, we performed crystallography and size exclusion chromatography-coupled small angle x-ray scattering experiments, which revealed a molecular model of BBK32-C in complex with activated human C1r. Structure-guided site-directed mutagenesis was combined with surface plasmon resonance binding experiments and assays of complement function to validate the predicted molecular interface. Analysis of the structures shows that BBK32 inhibits activated forms of C1r by occluding substrate interaction subsites (i.e., S1 and S1’) and reveals a surprising role for the C1r B loop for full inhibitory activity of BBK32.     Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy as a screening tool for the urinary calculi characterization.

    The aim of this study has been the development of a fast and reduced cost screening tool for the kidney stones characterization based on attenuated total reflectance infrared measurements (ATR-FT-IR) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). The method was compared with the traditional chemical methods used in hospitals based on reagents kits. 111 renal calculi samples were analyzed by a reference chemical method and their infrared ATR spectra obtained. The cluster analysis was made using the regions from 3662 to 2247 cm-1 and from 1956 to 565 cm-1 after vector normalization of spectra data and using Ward”™s linkage method and the Euclidean distance for the discrimination of the different sample groups. Dendrographic classification provides four groups of samples, according to the presence of uric acid, calcium oxalate or a combination of this compound with other phosphate salts. The IR spectra and dendrographic classification evidences the bad discrimination of some stone samples by the chemical method. As a conclusion, hierarchical cluster analysis of ATR-FT-IR spectra of kidney stones provides a fast, low-cost and environmental friendly method to classify samples in order to establish the clinical origin of urinary calculi, being evidenced that this methodology is free from the mistakes found in some cases using chemical kits
