Reversal of the extraordinary Hall effect polarity in thin Co/Pd multilayers
Thin Co/Pd multilayers, with room temperature perpendicular anisotropy and an
enhanced surface scattering, were studied for the possible use in the
extraordinary Hall effect (EHE) - based magnetic memory devices. Polarity of
the EHE signal was found to change from negative in thick samples to positive
in thin ones. Reversal of EHE sign was also observed in thick samples with
aging. The effect is argued to be related to the dominance of surface
scattering having the EHE polarity opposite to that of the bulk
Mixing and merging for spoken document retrieval
This paper describes a number of experiments that explo-
red the issues surrounding the retrieval of spoken documents. Two such
issues were examined. First, attempting to find the best use of speech
recogniser output to produce the highest retrieval effectiveness. Second,
investigating the potential problems of retrieving from a so-called "mi-
xed collection", i.e. one that contains documents from both a speech
recognition system (producing many errors) and from hand transcription (producing presumably near perfect documents). The result of the
first part of the work found that merging the transcripts of multiple
recognisers showed most promise. The investigation in the second part
showed how the term weighting scheme used in a retrieval system was
important in determining whether the system was affected detrimentally
when retrieving from a mixed collection
Optical Theorem and the Inversion of Cross Section Data for Atom Scattering from Defects on Surfaces
The information content and properties of the cross section for atom
scattering from a defect on a flat surface are investigated. Using the Sudden
approximation, a simple expression is obtained that relates the cross section
to the underlying atom/defect interaction potential. An approximate inversion
formula is given, that determines the shape function of the defect from the
scattering data. Another inversion formula approximately determines the
potential due to a weak corrugation in the case of substitutional disorder. An
Optical Theorem, derived in the framework of the Sudden approximation, plays a
central role in deriving the equations that conveniently relate the interaction
potential to the cross section. Also essential for the result is the
equivalence of the operational definition for the cross section for scattering
by a defect, given by Poelsema and Comsa, and the formal definition from
quantum scattering theory. This equivalence is established here. The inversion
result is applied to determine the shape function of an Ag atom on Pt(111) from

The impact of the state of the troposphere on the response to stratospheric heating in a simplified GCM
Previous studies have made use of simplified general circulation models (sGCMs) to investigate the atmospheric response to various forcings. In particular, several studies have investigated the tropospheric response to changes in stratospheric temperature. This is potentially relevant for many climate forcings. Here the impact of changing the tropospheric climatology on the modeled response to perturbations in stratospheric temperature is investigated by the introduction of topography into the model and altering the tropospheric jet structure.
The results highlight the need for very long integrations so as to determine accurately the magnitude of response. It is found that introducing topography into the model and thus removing the zonally symmetric nature of the model’s boundary conditions reduces the magnitude of response to stratospheric heating. However, this reduction is of comparable size to the variability in the magnitude of response between different ensemble members of the same 5000-day experiment.
Investigations into the impact of varying tropospheric jet structure reveal a trend with lower-latitude/narrower jets having a much larger magnitude response to stratospheric heating than higher-latitude/wider jets. The jet structures that respond more strongly to stratospheric heating also exhibit longer time scale variability in their control run simulations, consistent with the idea that a feedback between the eddies and the mean flow is both responsible for the persistence of the control run variability and important in producing the tropospheric response to stratospheric temperature perturbations
The MUCHFUSS photometric campaign
Hot subdwarfs (sdO/Bs) are the helium-burning cores of red giants, which lost
almost all of their hydrogen envelopes. This mass loss is often triggered by
common envelope interactions with close stellar or even substellar companions.
Cool companions like late-type stars or brown dwarfs are detectable via
characteristic light curve variations like reflection effects and often also
eclipses. To search for such objects we obtained multi-band light curves of 26
close sdO/B binary candidates from the MUCHFUSS project with the BUSCA
instrument. We discovered a new eclipsing reflection effect system
(~d) with a low-mass M dwarf companion ().
Three more reflection effect binaries found in the course of the campaign were
already published, two of them are eclipsing systems, in one system only
showing the reflection effect but no eclipses the sdB primary is found to be
pulsating. Amongst the targets without reflection effect a new long-period sdB
pulsator was discovered and irregular light variations were found in two sdO
stars. The found light variations allowed us to constrain the fraction of
reflection effect binaries and the substellar companion fraction around sdB
stars. The minimum fraction of reflection effect systems amongst the close sdB
binaries might be greater than 15\% and the fraction of close substellar
companions in sdB binaries might be as high as . This would result in a
close substellar companion fraction to sdB stars of about 3\%. This fraction is
much higher than the fraction of brown dwarfs around possible progenitor
systems, which are solar-type stars with substellar companions around 1 AU, as
well as close binary white dwarfs with brown dwarf companions. This might be a
hint that common envelope interactions with substellar objects are
preferentially followed by a hot subdwarf phase.Comment: accepted for A&
Towards Integrated Governance of Landscape Development : The Swiss Model of Regional Nature Parks
Coherent regulation of landscape as a resource is a major challenge. How can the development interests of some actors (eg cable car operators and property developers) be reconciled with those of others (agriculture, forestry) and with conservation of biodiversity and scenic value? To help understand how the newly introduced Regional Nature Parks (RNPs) can improve the coherence of the regulation regime in Switzerland, we highlight current direct mechanisms for regulation of landscape as a resource (bans, inventories, subsidies) as well as indirect mechanisms (taking place through the regulation of the physical basis of landscapes, eg forest, land, and water planning policies). We show that RNPs are fundamentally innovative because they make it possible to manage and coordinate indirect strategies for appropriate regulation of resources at a landscape scale. In other words, RNPs enable organization of governance of landscape as a resource in a perimeter that is not necessarily restricted to administrative boundaries
Pregnancy-associated breast cancer - Special features in diagnosis and treatment
For obvious psychological reasons it is difficult to associate pregnancy - a life-giving period of our existence with life-threatening malignancies. Symptoms pointing to malignancy are often ignored by both patients and physicians, and this, together with the greater difficulty of diagnostic imaging, probably results in the proven delay in the detection of breast cancers during pregnancy. The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are becoming more and more important, as the fulfillment of the desire to have children is increasingly postponed until a later age associated with a higher risk of carcinoma, and improved cure rates of solid tumors no longer exclude subsequent pregnancies. The following article summarizes the special features of the diagnosis and primary therapy of pregnancy-associated breast cancer with particular consideration of cytostatic therapy
Transverse "resistance overshoot" in a Si/SiGe two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall effect regime
We investigate the peculiarities of the "overshoot" phenomena in the
transverse Hall resistance R_{xy} in Si/SiGe. Near the low magnetic field end
of the quantum Hall effect plateaus, when the filling factor \nu approaches an
integer i, R_{xy} overshoots the normal plateau value h/ie^2. However, if
magnetic field B increases further, R_{xy} decreases to its normal value. It is
shown that in the investigated sample n-Si/Si_{0.7}Ge_{0.3}, overshoots exist
for almost all \nu. Existence of overshoot in R_{xy} observed in different
materials and for different \nu, where splitting of the adjacent Landau bands
has different character, hints at the common origin of this effect. Comparison
of the experimental curves R_{xy}(\nu) for \nu = 3 and \nu = 5 with and without
overshoot showed that this effect exist in the whole interval between plateaus,
not only in the region where R_{xy} exceeds the normal plateau value.Comment: 3 pages, 5 EPS figure
