TIDAL AND TIDAL-RESONANT EFFECTS IN COALESCING BINARIES
Tidal and tidal-resonant effects in coalescing compact binary systems are
investigated by direct numerical integration of the equations of motion. For
the stars polytropic models are used. The tidal effects are found to be
dominated by the (non-resonant) -modes. The effect of the -mode-tidal
resonances is obtained. The tidal interaction is shown to be of interest
especially for low-mass binaries. There exists a characteristic final plunge
orbit beyond which the system cannot remain stable even if radiation reaction
is not taken into account; in agreement with results obtained by Lai et al.
\shortcite{Lai93}. The importance of the investigated effects for the

Directly Indecomposables in Semidegenerate Varieties of Connected po-Groupoids
We study varieties with a term-definable poset structure, "po-groupoids". It
is known that connected posets have the "strict refinement property" (SRP). In
[arXiv:0808.1860v1 [math.LO]] it is proved that semidegenerate varieties with
the SRP have definable factor congruences and if the similarity type is finite,
directly indecomposables are axiomatizable by a set of first-order sentences.
We obtain such a set for semidegenerate varieties of connected po-groupoids and
show its quantifier complexity is bounded in general
Recursive Estimation of Orientation Based on the Bingham Distribution
Directional estimation is a common problem in many tracking applications.
Traditional filters such as the Kalman filter perform poorly because they fail
to take the periodic nature of the problem into account. We present a recursive
filter for directional data based on the Bingham distribution in two
dimensions. The proposed filter can be applied to circular filtering problems
with 180 degree symmetry, i.e., rotations by 180 degrees cannot be
distinguished. It is easily implemented using standard numerical techniques and
suitable for real-time applications. The presented approach is extensible to
quaternions, which allow tracking arbitrary three-dimensional orientations. We
evaluate our filter in a challenging scenario and compare it to a traditional

Childhood maltreatment and amygdala connectivity in methamphetamine dependence: a pilot study.
IntroductionChildhood maltreatment, a well-known risk factor for the development of substance abuse disorders, is associated with functional and structural abnormalities in the adult brain, particularly in the limbic system. However, almost no research has examined the relationship between childhood maltreatment and brain function in individuals with drug abuse disorders.MethodsWe conducted a pilot study of the relationship between childhood maltreatment (evaluated with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire; Bernstein and Fink 1998) and resting-state functional connectivity of the amygdala (bilateral region of interest) with functional magnetic resonance imaging in 15 abstinent, methamphetamine-dependent research participants. Within regions that showed connectivity with the amygdala as a function of maltreatment, we also evaluated whether amygdala connectivity was associated positively with negative affect and negatively with healthy emotional processing.ResultsThe results indicated that childhood maltreatment was positively associated with resting-state connectivity between the amygdala and right hippocampus, right parahippocampal gyrus, right inferior temporal gyrus, right orbitofrontal cortex, cerebellum, and brainstem. Furthermore, connectivity between the amygdala and hippocampus was positively related to measures of depression, trait anxiety, and emotion dysregulation, and negatively related to self-compassion and dispositional mindfulness.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that childhood maltreatment may contribute to increased limbic connectivity and maladaptive emotional processing in methamphetamine-dependent adults, and that healthy emotion regulation strategies may serve as a therapeutic target to ameliorate the associated behavioral phenotype. Childhood maltreatment warrants further investigation as a potentially important etiological factor in the neurobiology and treatment of substance use disorders
Isolated Star Formation: A Compact HII Region in the Virgo Cluster
We report on the discovery of an isolated, compact HII region in the Virgo
cluster. The object is located in the diffuse outer halo of NGC 4388, or could
possibly be in intracluster space. Star formation can thus take place far
outside the main star forming regions of galaxies. This object is powered by a
small starburst with an estimated mass of \sim 400\msun and age of \sim
3\myr. From a total sample of 17 HII region candidates, the present rate of
isolated star formation estimated in our Virgo field is small, \sim 10^{-6}
Msun arcmin}^{-2} yr^{-1}. However, this mode of star formation might have
been more important at higher redshifts and be responsible for a fraction of
the observed intracluster stars and total cluster metal production. This object
is relevant also for distance determinations with the planetary nebula
luminosity function from emission line surveys, for high-velocity clouds and
the in situ origin of B stars in the Galactic halo, and for local enrichment of
