The 2017 Irish Anglerfish and Megrim Survey (IAMS) took place from 14th February to 7th March (area 7bcjk) and 8-17th April 2017 (area 6a) on RV Celtic Explorer. The main objective of the survey is to obtain biomass estimates for anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius and L. budegassa) and establish an abundance index for megrim (Lepidorhombus whiffiaginis and L. boscii) in areas 6a (south of 58°N) and 7 (west of 8°W). Secondary objectives are to collect data on the distribution and relative abundance of anglerfish, megrim and other commercially exploited species. The survey also collects maturity and other biological information for commercial fish species. The IAMS survey is coordinated with the Scottish Anglerfish and Megrim Survey (SIAMISS) and uses the same gear and fishing practices
Searching speeds and the energetic feasibility of an obligate whale-scavenging fish
Two recently published models reach opposite conclusions on the energetic feasibility of a scavenging fish that specialises oil whale carcasses. We argue that the key difference between these models lies in their estimate of the likely searching speed of such a hypothetical scavenger. Neither of the previous models considers that although faster searching will allow food sites to be found more quickly, it will also reduce the time between meals that the fish can survive on its reserves. Hence, we present a novel model that encapsulates this trade-off, and use this model to predict the optimal searching speed for Such a hypothetical scavenger. The model predicts that the optimal speed should increase with mass and be in the range 0.1-0.2 m s(-1) for fish of the range of sizes found for the ubiquitous grenadier Coryphaenoides armatus. These values accord with most estimates of the swimming speeds for this species. Hence, we conclude that rejection of a whale-carcass feeding specialist fish on energetic grounds is premature. Although, we see no reason to dismiss Such a specialist oil energetic grounds, we argue that such a fish will be unlikely oil ecological grounds, although a deep-sea fish that gathered much of its energy from scavenging at relatively large food packages oil the ocean floor should be feasible
21st century fisheries management: a spatio-temporally explicit tariff-based approach combining multiple drivers and incentivising responsible fishing

Traditionally fisheries management has focused on biomass and mortality, expressed annually and across large management units. However, because fish abundance varies at much smaller spatio-temporal scales, fishing mortality can potentially be controlled more effectively if managed at finer scale. The ecosystem approach requires more indicators at finer scales as well. Incorporating ecosystem targets would need additional management tools with potentially conflicting results. We present a simple, integrated, management approach that provides incentives for “good behaviour”. Fishers would be given a number of fishing-impact credits, called real-time incentives (RTIs), to spend according to spatio-temporally varying tariffs per fishing day. RTI quotas and tariffs could be based on commercial stocks and ecosystem targets. Fishers could choose how to spend their RTIs, e.g. by limited fishing in high-catch or sensitive areas or by fishing longer in lower-catch or less sensitive areas. The RTI system does not prescribe and forbid, but instead allows fishers to fish wherever and whenever they want; ecosystem costs are internalized and fishers have to take them into account in their business decisions. We envisage no need for traditional landings or catch quotas for the fleets while operating under the scheme. The approach could facilitate further devolution of responsibility to industry.</jats:p

Spatial overlap of grey seals and fisheries in Irish waters, some new insights using telemetry technology and VMS
Seals and humans often target the same food resource, leading to competition. This is of mounting concern with fish stocks in global decline. Grey seals were tracked from southeast Ireland, an area of mixed demersal and pelagic fisheries, and overlap with fisheries on the Celtic Shelf and Irish Sea was assessed. Overall, there was low overlap between the tagged seals and fisheries. However, when we separate active (e.g. trawls) and passive gear (e.g. nets, lines) fisheries, a different picture emerged. Overlap with active fisheries was no different from that expected under a random distribution, but overlap with passive fisheries was significantly higher. This suggests that grey seals may be targeting the same areas as passive fisheries and/or specifically targeting passive gear. There was variation in foraging areas between individual seals suggesting habitat partitioning to reduce intra-specific competition or potential individual specialisation in foraging behaviour. Our findings support other recent assertions that seal/fisheries interactions in Irish waters are an issue in inshore passive fisheries, most likely at the operational and individual level. This suggests that seal population management measures would be unjustifiable, and mitigation is best focused on minimizing interactions at nets
The Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation
We explore the Tully-Fisher relation over five decades in stellar mass in
galaxies with circular velocities ranging over 30 < Vc < 300 km/s. We find a
clear break in the optical Tully-Fisher relation: field galaxies with Vc < 90
km/s fall below the relation defined by brighter galaxies. These faint galaxies
are however very gas rich; adding in the gas mass and plotting baryonic disk
mass Md = M* + Mg in place of luminosity restores a single linear relation. The
Tully-Fisher relation thus appears fundamentally to be a relation between
rotation velocity and total baryonic mass of the form Md = A Vc^4.Comment: 10 pages including 1 color figure. Accepted for publication in ApJ

Cosmological Feedback from High-Redshift Dwarf Galaxies
We model how repeated supernova explosions in high-redshift dwarf starburst
galaxies drive superbubbles and winds out of the galaxies. We compute the
efficiencies of metal and mass ejection and energy transport from the galactic
potentials, including the effect of cosmological infall of external gas. The
starburst bubbles quickly blow out of small, high-redshift, galactic disks, but
must compete with the ram pressure of the infalling gas to escape into
intergalactic space. We show that the assumed efficiency of the star formation
rate dominates the bubble evolution and the metal, mass, and energy feedback
efficiencies. With star formation efficiency f*=0.01, the ram pressure of
infall can confine the bubbles around high-redshift dwarf galaxies with
circular velocities v_c>52 km/s. We can expect high metal and mass ejection
efficiencies, and moderate energy transport efficiencies in halos with
v_c~30-50 km/s and f*~0.01 as well as in halos with v_c~100 km/s and f*>>0.01.
Such haloes collapse successively from 1-2 sigma peaks in LambdaCDM Gaussian
density perturbations as time progresses. These dwarf galaxies can probably
enrich low and high-density regions of intergalactic space with metals to
10^-3-10^-2 Zsun as they collapse at z~8 and z<5 respectively. They also may be
able to provide adequate turbulent energy to prevent the collapse of other
nearby halos, as well as to significantly broaden Lyman-alpha absorption lines
to v_rms~20-40 km/s. We compute the timescales for the next starbursts if gas
freely falls back after a starburst, and find that, for star formation
efficiencies as low as f*<0.01, the next starburst should occur in less than
half the Hubble time at the collapse redshift. This suggests that episodic star
formation may be ubiquitous in dwarf galaxies.Comment: Accepted for ApJ v613, 60 pages, 15 figure
Low Surface Brightness Galaxies around the HDF-S: II. Distances and volume densities
With this study we aim at the spectroscopic verification of a photometrically
selected sample of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy candidates in a field
around the Hubble Deep Field-South (HDF-S). The sample helps to extend the
parameter space for LSB galaxies to lower central surface brightnesses and to
provide better estimates on the volume densities of these objects. To derive
redshifts for the LSB candidates, long-slit spectra were obtained covering a
spectral range from 3400{\AA} to 7500{\AA}. The observations have been obtained
using the ESO 3.6m telescope, equipped with the EFOSC2 spectrograph. From the
measured radial velocities, distances could be estimated. With this distance
information, it is possible to differentiate between true LSB galaxies and
higher redshift High Surface Brightness (HSB) galaxies which may contaminate
the sample. A correction for the surface brightnesses can then be applied,
accounting for the cosmological dimming effect (``Tolman Dimming''). We show
that ~70% of the LSB candidates, selected based on their location in the
color-color space, are real LSB galaxies. Their position in the color-color
diagrams, therefore, indicate that the LSB galaxies have a different stellar
population mix resulting from a different star formation history compared to
HSBs. Our LSB galaxy sample consists only of large disk galaxies with
scale-length between 2.5kpc and 7.3kpc. We confirm the flat central surface
brightness distribution of previous surveys and extend this distribution down

The mass surface density in the local disk and the chemical evolution of the Galaxy
We have studied the effect of adopting different values of the total baryonic
mass surface density in the local disk at the present time in a model for the
chemical evolution of the Galaxy. We have compared our model results with the
G-dwarf metallicity distribution, the amounts of gas, stars, stellar remnants,
infall rate and SN rate in the solar vicinity, and with the radial abundance
gradients and gas distribution in the disk. This comparison strongly suggests
that the value of the total baryonic mass surface density in the local disk
which best fits the observational properties should lie in the range 50-75 Msun
