Semantic annotation in ubiquitous healthcare skills-based learning environments
This paper describes initial work on developing a semantic annotation system for the augmentation of skills-based learning for Healthcare. Scenario driven skills-based learning takes place in an augmented hospital ward simulation involving a patient simulator known as SimMan. The semantic annotation software enables real-time annotations of these simulations for debriefing of the students, student self study and better analysis of the learning approaches of mentors. A description of the developed system is provided with initial findings and future directions for the work.<br/

The influence of soil moisture on threshold runoff generation processes in an alpine headwater catchment
This study investigates the role of soil moisture on the threshold runoff response in a small headwater catchment in the Italian Alps that is characterised by steep hillslopes and a distinct riparian zone. This study focuses on: (i) the threshold soil moisture-runoff relationship and the influence of catchment topography on this relation; (ii) the temporal dynamics of soil moisture, streamflow and groundwater that characterize the catchment's response to rainfall during dry and wet periods; and (iii) the combined effect of antecedent wetness conditions and rainfall amount on hillslope and riparian runoff. Our results highlight the strong control exerted by soil moisture on runoff in this catchment: a sharp threshold exists in the relationship between soil water content and runoff coefficient, streamflow, and hillslope-averaged depth to water table. Low runoff ratios were likely related to the response of the riparian zone, which was almost always close to saturation. High runoff ratios occurred during wet antecedent conditions, when the soil moisture threshold was exceeded. In these cases, subsurface flow was activated on hillslopes, which became a major contributor to runoff. Antecedent wetness conditions also controlled the catchment's response time: during dry periods, streamflow reacted and peaked prior to hillslope soil moisture whereas during wet conditions the opposite occurred. This difference resulted in a hysteretic behaviour in the soil moisture-streamflow relationship. Finally, the influence of antecedent moisture conditions on runoff was also evident in the relation between cumulative rainfall and total stormflow. Small storms during dry conditions produced low stormflow amounts, likely mainly from overland flow from the near saturated riparian zone. Conversely, for rainfall events during wet conditions, higher stormflow values were observed and hillslopes must have contributed to streamflow
MLT gravity wave climatology in the South America equatorial region observed by airglow imager
International audienceAn all-sky CCD imager for OH, O2 and OI (557.7 nm) airglow emission measurements was operated at São João do Cariri (Cariri), Brazil (7° S, 36° W), from October 2000 to December 2004. A large amount of image data, more than 3000 h of observation and around 1000 wave events, makes it possible to classify the gravity wave characteristics, which are statistically significant. The observed waves show a typically short horizontal wavelength (5?45 km) and a short period (5?35 min), and horizontal phase speeds of 1 to 80 m/s. In most cases band-type waves (horizontal wavelength between 10 and 60 km) showed a clear preference for the horizontal propagation direction from the South American continent to the Atlantic Ocean. Ripples also have similar features but with different anisotropy. In this paper we focus our discussion on the wave characteristics of the bands and ripples and a comparison between them
Charged pions from Ni on Ni collisions between 1 and 2 AGeV
Charged pions from Ni + Ni reactions at 1.05, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV are measured
with the FOPI detector. The mean multiplicities per mean number of
participants increase with beam energy, in accordance with earlier studies of
the Ar + KCl and La + La systems. The pion kinetic energy spectra have concave
shape and are fitted by the superposition of two Boltzmann distributions with
different temperatures. These apparent temperatures depend only weakly on
bombarding energy. The pion angular distributions show a forward/backward
enhancement at all energies, but not the enhancement which was
observed in case of the Au + Au system. These features also determine the
rapidity distributions which are therefore in disagreement with the hypothesis
of one thermal source. The importance of the Coulomb interaction and of the
pion rescattering by spectator matter in producing these phenomena is

Discontinuous galerkin spectral/hp element modelling of dispersive shallow water systems
Flow angle from intermediate mass fragment measurements
Directed sideward flow of light charged particles and intermediate mass
fragments was measured in different symmetric reactions at bombarding energies
from 90 to 800 AMeV. The flow parameter is found to increase with the charge of
the detected fragment up to Z = 3-4 and then turns into saturation for heavier
fragments. Guided by simple simulations of an anisotropic expanding thermal
source, we show that the value at saturation can provide a good estimate of the
flow angle, , in the participant region. It is found that
depends strongly on the impact parameter. The excitation
function of reveals striking deviations from the ideal
hydrodynamical scaling. The data exhibit a steep rise of \Theta_{\flow} to a
maximum at around 250-400 AMeV, followed by a moderate decrease as the

Charged pion production in Ru+Ru collisions at 400A and 1528A MeV
We present transverse momentum and rapidity spectra of charged pions in
central Ru + Ru collisions at 400 and 1528 MeV. The data exhibit enhanced
production at low transverse momenta compared to the expectations from the
thermal model that includes the decay of -resonances and thermal
pions. Modification of the -spectral function and the Coulomb
interaction are necessary to describe the detailed shape of the transverse
momentum spectra. Within the framework of the thermal model, the freeze-out
radii of pions are similar at both beam energies. The IQMD model reproduces the
shapes of the transverse momentum and rapidity spectra of pions, but the
predicted absolute yields are larger than in the measurements, especially at
lower beam energy.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure
Sideward flow of K+ mesons in Ru+Ru and Ni+Ni reactions near threshold
Experimental data on K+ meson and proton sideward flow measured with the FOPI
detector at SIS/GSI in the reactions Ru+Ru at 1.69 AGeV and Ni+Ni at 1.93 AGeV
are presented. The K+ sideward flow is found to be anti-correlated (correlated)
with the one of protons at low (high) transverse momenta. When compared to the
predictions of a transport model, the data favour the existence of an in-medium
