Improvements in the storage and marketing quality of grain legumes: Final technical report
The objective of this three-year project based in northern Ghana was to identify qualitative and quantitative losses in the storage of grain legumes by small-scale farmers and develop means of reducing the losses. The project used participatory surveys to monitor the loss in value during storage, both on-farm and in the markets. These surveys showed that heavy losses occurred during storage in markets
Longitudinal study of the effects of teat condition on the risk of new intramammary infections in dairy cows
Machine milking–induced alterations of teat tissue may impair local defense
mechanisms and increase the risk of new intramammary infections. The objective
of the current study was to assess the influence of short-term and long-term
alterations of teat tissue and infectious status of the udder quarter on the
risk of naturally occurring new intramammary infections, inflammatory
responses, and mastitis. Short-term and long-term changes in teat condition of
right udder quarters of 135 cows of a commercial dairy farm in Saxony-Anhalt,
Germany, were recorded monthly for 10 mo using simple classification schemes.
Quarter milk samples were collected from all examined quarters at each farm
visit. Bacteriological culture results and somatic cell counts of quarter milk
samples were used to determine new inflammatory responses (increase from
≤100,000 cells/mL to >100,000 cells/mL between 2 samples), new infections
(detection of a pathogen from a quarter that was free of the same pathogen at
the preceding sampling), and new mastitis (combination of new inflammatory
response and new infection). Separate Poisson mixed models for new
inflammatory responses, new infections, and new mastitis caused by specific
pathogens or groups of pathogens (contagious, environmental, major, minor, or
any) were used to estimate risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Data
preparation and parameter estimation were performed using the open source
statistical analysis software R. We observed no effect of any variable
describing teat condition on the risk of new intramammary infections,
inflammatory responses, or mastitis. Intramammary infections of the same udder
quarter in the preceding month did not affect risk either
A comparative framework: how broadly applicable is a 'rigorous' critical junctures framework?
The paper tests Hogan and Doyle's (2007, 2008) framework for examining critical junctures. This framework sought to incorporate the concept of ideational change in understanding critical junctures. Until its development, frameworks utilized in identifying critical junctures were subjective, seeking only to identify crisis, and subsequent policy changes, arguing that one invariably led to the other, as both occurred around the same time. Hogan and Doyle (2007, 2008) hypothesized ideational change as an intermediating variable in their framework, determining if, and when, a crisis leads to radical policy change. Here we test this framework on cases similar to, but different from, those employed in developing the exemplar. This will enable us determine whether the framework's relegation of ideational change to a condition of crisis holds, or, if ideational change has more importance than is ascribed to it by this framework. This will also enable us determined if the framework itself is robust, and fit for the purposes it was designed to perform — identifying the nature of policy change
Evidence of and search for double-charmonium production in and decays
Using data samples of and
events collected with the Belle detector, a first experimental
search has been made for double-charmonium production in the exclusive decays
, where , , , , and . No significant signal is
observed in the spectra of the mass recoiling against the reconstructed
or except for the evidence of production with a
significance of for . The
measured branching fraction \BR(\Upsilon(1S)\rightarrow J/\psi+\chi_{c1}) is
. The
confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the other modes
having a significance of less than are determined. These results are
consistent with theoretical calculations using the nonrelativistic QCD
factorization approach.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. The fit range was extended to include
X(4160) signal according to referee's suggestions. Other results unchanged.

Search for B+ -> l+ nu gamma decays with hadronic tagging using the full Belle data sample
We search for the decay B+ -> l+ nu gamma with l+ = e+ or mu+ using the full
Belle data set of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with
the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We reconstruct
one B meson in a hadronic decay mode and search for the B+ -> l+ nu gamma decay
in the remainder of the event. We observe no significant signal within the
phase space of E_gamma^sig > 1 GeV and obtain upper limits of BR(B+ -> e+ nu
gamma) mu+ nu gamma) l+ nu
gamma) < 3.5 x 10^-6 at 90 % credibility level.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Measurement of phi_3 with Dalitz plot analysis of B+ -> D(*)K(*)+ decay
We present a measurement of the unitarity triangle angle phi_3 using a Dalitz
plot analysis of the K0_S pi+ pi- decay of the neutral D meson from the B+- ->
D(*)K(*)+- process. The method employs the interference between D0 and D0bar to
extract the angle phi_3, strong phase Delta and the ratio r of suppressed and
allowed amplitudes. We apply this method to a 357 fb-1 data sample collected by
the Belle experiment. The analysis uses three modes: B+ -> DK+, B+ -> D*K+ with
D* -> Dpi0, and B+ -> DK*+ with K*+ -> K0_S pi+, as well as the corresponding
charge-conjugate modes. From a combined maximum likelihood fit to the three
modes, we obtain phi_3=53+15-18(stat)+-3(syst)+-9(model) degrees. The
corresponding two standard deviation interval is 8<phi_3<111 degrees.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables. To be submitted to Phys. Rev.
Measurement of the CKM Matrix Element from at Belle
We present a new measurement of the CKM matrix element from decays, reconstructed with the full Belle data set
of integrated luminosity. Two form factor
parameterizations, originally conceived by the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert (CLN)
and the Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL) groups, are used to extract the product
and the decay form factors, where
is the normalization factor and is a small
electroweak correction. In the CLN parameterization we find
, , , . For the BGL parameterization we
obtain , which is consistent with the World Average when correcting for
. The branching fraction of is measured to be . We also present a new
test of lepton flavor universality violation in semileptonic decays,
. The errors correspond to the statistical and
systematic uncertainties respectively. This is the most precise measurement of
and form factors to date and the first
experimental study of the BGL form factor parameterization in an experimental
measurement
