The Hutchinsonian defence of an Old Testament Trinitarian Christianity: The controversy over Elahim, 1735-1773

Cataloged from PDF version of article. The importance of Hebraic studies as part of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment debate can hardly be overestimated. The question of the authority of the Books of Scripture forced intellectuals in England to revisit the language of the Old Testament text. The agenda of the Hutchinsonians here was to highlight the Old Testament’s Trinitarian elements, as they saw them. The controversy over the etymology of the word Elahim illustrated that the Hutchinsonians were the young Turks of orthodoxy in the fight between fideism and rationalism. It also demonstrated the problem the Hutchinsonians represented for those who would otherwise be their Trinitarian allies. r 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Exact static solutions in four dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity

    Get PDF
Classes of exact static solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity are found. Besides of the well-known solutions previously found in the literature, new solutions are presented. It's shown that spherically symmetric solutions, except the case of charged dilaton black hole, represent globally naked strong curvature singularities.Comment: 8 pages, late

    Type IIB Colliding Plane Waves

Four-dimensional colliding plane wave (CPW) solutions have played an important role in understanding the classical non-linearities of Einstein's equations. In this note, we investigate CPW solutions in 2n+22n+2--dimensional Einstein gravity with a n+1n+1-form flux. By using an isomorphism with the four-dimensional problem, we construct exact solutions analogous to the Szekeres vacuum solution in four dimensions. The higher-dimensional versions of the Khan-Penrose and Bell-Szekeres CPW solutions are studied perturbatively in the vicinity of the light-cone. We find that under small perturbations, a curvature singularity is generically produced, leading to both space-like and time-like singularities. For n=4n=4, our results pertain to the collision of two ten-dimensional type IIB Blau - Figueroa o'Farrill - Hull - Papadopoulos plane waves.Comment: 20+10 pages, 2 figures, uses JHEP3.cls; v2: refs [3,10,22] corrected, remark added below (3.9) on inexistence of conformally flat CPW in our ansatz, final version to appear in JHE

    Chiral models in dilaton-Maxwell gravity

    Get PDF
We study symmetry properties of the Einstein-Maxwell theory nonminimaly coupled to the dilaton field. We consider a static case with pure electric (magnetic) Maxwell field and show that the resulting system becomes a nonlinear sigma-model wich possesses a chiral representation. We construct the corresponding chiral matrix and establish a representation which is related to the pair of Ernst-like potentials. These potentials are used for separation of the symmetry group into the gauge and nongauge (charging) sectors. New variables, which linearize the action of charging symmetries, are also established; a solution generation technique based on the use of charging symmetries is formulated. This technique is used for generation of the elecricaly (magneticaly) charged dilatonic fields from the static General Relativity ones.Comment: 9 pages in LaTex; published in Gen. Rel. Quasi-normal modes of warped black holes and warped AdS/CFT correspondence

We analytically calculate the quasi-normal modes of various perturbations of spacelike stretched and null warped AdS3AdS_3 black holes. From AdS/CFT correspondence, these quasi-normal modes are expected to appear as the poles in momentum space of retarded Green functions of dual operators in CFT at finite temperature. We find that this is indeed the case, after taking into account of the subtle identification of quantum numbers. The subtlety comes from the fact that only after appropriate coordinate transformation the asymptotic geometries of warped black holes are the same as the ones of warped AdS3AdS_3 spacetimes. We show that in general the quasi-normal modes are in good agreement with the prediction of the warped AdS/CFT correspondence, up to a constant factor. As a byproduct, we compute the conformal dimensions of boundary operators dual to the perturbations. Our result gives strong support to the conjectured warped AdS/CFT correspondence.Comment: 26 pages; typos corrected, references added; more clarifications, match the version to appear in JHE

All stationary axi-symmetric local solutions of topologically massive gravity

We classify all stationary axi-symmetric solutions of topologically massive gravity into Einstein, Schr\"odinger, warped and generic solutions. We construct explicitly all local solutions in the first three sectors and present an algorithm for the numerical construction of all local solutions in the generic sector. The only input for this algorithm is the value of one constant of motion if the solution has an analytic centre, and three constants of motion otherwise. We present several examples, including soliton solutions that asymptote to warped AdS.Comment: 42 pages, 9 figures. v2: Changed potentially confusing labelling of one sector, added references. v3: Minor changes, matches published versio

Topologically Massive Gravity and Ricci-Cotton Flow

We consider Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG), which is three dimensional general relativity with a cosmological constant and a gravitational Chern-Simons term. When the cosmological constant is negative the theory has two potential vacuum solutions: Anti-de Sitter space and Warped Anti-de Sitter space. The theory also contains a massive graviton state which renders these solutions unstable for certain values of the parameters and boundary conditions. We study the decay of these solutions due to the condensation of the massive graviton mode using Ricci-Cotton flow, which is the appropriate generalization of Ricci flow to TMG. When the Chern-Simons coupling is small the AdS solution flows to warped AdS by the condensation of the massive graviton mode. When the coupling is large the situation is reversed, and warped AdS flows to AdS. Minisuperspace models are constructed where these flows are studied explicitly

Behaviour of Magnetic Tubes in Neutron Star's Interior

It is found from Maxwell's equations that the magnetic field lines are good analogues of relativistic strings. It is shown that the super-conducting current in the neutron star's interior causes local rotation of magnetic flux tubes carrying quantized flux.Comment: 6 pages, no figure

Dynamics and stability of the Godel universe

We use covariant techniques to describe the properties of the Godel universe and then consider its linear response to a variety of perturbations. Against matter aggregations, we find that the stability of the Godel model depends primarily upon the presence of gradients in the centrifugal energy, and secondarily on the equation of state of the fluid. The latter dictates the behaviour of the model when dealing with homogeneous perturbations. The vorticity of the perturbed Godel model is found to evolve as in almost-FRW spacetimes, with some additional directional effects due to shape distortions. We also consider gravitational-wave perturbations by investigating the evolution of the magnetic Weyl component. This tensor obeys a simple plane-wave equation, which argues for the neutral stability of the Godel model against linear gravity-wave distortions. The implications of the background rotation for scalar-field Godel cosmologies are also discussed.Comment: Revised version, to match paper published in Class. Quantum Gra
