A relationship between eye movement patterns and performance in a precognitive tracking task

    Get PDF
Eye movements made by various subjects in the performance of a precognitive tracking task are studied. The tracking task persented by an antiaircraft artillery (AAA) simulator has an input forcing function represented by a deterministic aircraft fly-by. The performance of subjects is ranked by two metrics. Good, mediocre, and poor trackers are selected for analysis based on performance during the difficult segment of the tracking task and over replications. Using phase planes to characterize both the eye movement patterns and the displayed error signal, a simple metric is developed to study these patterns. Two characterizations of eye movement strategies are defined and quantified. Using these two types of eye strategies, two conclusions are obtained about good, mediocre, and poor trackers. First, the eye tracker who used a fixed strategy will consistently perform better. Secondly, the best fixed strategy is defined as a Crosshair Fixator

Scaling forces to asteroid surfaces: The role of cohesion

The scaling of physical forces to the extremely low ambient gravitational acceleration regimes found on the surfaces of small asteroids is performed. Resulting from this, it is found that van der Waals cohesive forces between regolith grains on asteroid surfaces should be a dominant force and compete with particle weights and be greater, in general, than electrostatic and solar radiation pressure forces. Based on this scaling, we interpret previous experiments performed on cohesive powders in the terrestrial environment as being relevant for the understanding of processes on asteroid surfaces. The implications of these terrestrial experiments for interpreting observations of asteroid surfaces and macro-porosity are considered, and yield interpretations that differ from previously assumed processes for these environments. Based on this understanding, we propose a new model for the end state of small, rapidly rotating asteroids which allows them to be comprised of relatively fine regolith grains held together by van der Waals cohesive forces.Comment: 54 pages, 7 figure

Amp\`ere-Class Pulsed Field Emission from Carbon-Nanotube Cathodes in a Radiofrequency Resonator

    Get PDF
Pulsed field emission from cold carbon-nanotube cathodes placed in a radiofrequency resonant cavity was observed. The cathodes were located on the backplate of a conventional 1+121+\frac{1}{2}-cell resonant cavity operating at 1.3-GHz and resulted in the production of bunch train with maximum average current close to 0.7 Amp\`ere. The measured Fowler-Nordheim characteristic, transverse emittance, and pulse duration are presented and, when possible, compared to numerical simulations. The implications of our results to high-average-current electron sources are briefly discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures; submitted to Applied Physics Letter

The role of glacier mice in the invertebrate colonisation of glacial surfaces: the moss balls of the Falljökull, Iceland

Glacier surfaces have a surprisingly complex ecology. Cryoconite holes contain diverse invertebrate communities while other invertebrates, such as Collembola often graze on algae and windblown dead organic on the glacier surface. Glacier mice (ovoid unattached moss balls) occur on some glaciers worldwide. Studies of these glacier mice have concentrated on their occurrence and mode of formation. There are no reports of the invertebrate communities. But, such glacier mice may provide a suitable favourable habitat and refuge for a variety of invertebrate groups to colonise the glacier surface. Here we describe the invertebrate fauna of the glacier mice (moss balls) of the Falljökull, Iceland. The glacier mice were composed of Racomitrium sp. and varied in size from 8.0 to 10.0 cm in length. All glacier mice studied contained invertebrates. Two species of Collembola were present. Pseudisotoma sensibilis (Tullberg, 1876) was numerically dominant with between 12 and 73 individuals per glacier mouse while Desoria olivacea (Tullberg, 1871) occurred but in far lower numbers. Tardigrada and Nematoda had mean densities of approximately 200 and 1,000 respectively. No Acari, Arachnida or Enchytraeidae were observed which may be related to the difficulty these groups have in colonizing the glacier mice. We suggest that glacier mice provide an unusual environmentally ameliorated microhabitat for an invertebrate community dwelling on a glacial surface. The glacier mice thereby enable an invertebrate fauna to colonise an otherwise largely inhospitable location with implications for carbon flow in the system

Increased risk of acute kidney injury in patients undergoing tricuspid valve surgery

OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine which patients undergoing tricuspid valve (TV) surgery are at increased risk for acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS We reviewed 951 patients [mean age 67 ± 13 years, 573 (60%) female] having TV surgery between 2000 and 2007. Analysis focused on clinical outcome; AKI was defined by the consensus RIFLE criteria (risk, injury, failure). RESULTS Surgical procedures included isolated TV surgery in 224 (24%) and TV surgery in conjunction with another cardiac operation in 727 (76%) patients. TV surgery involved redo surgery in 395 (42%). The incidence of postoperative AKI was 30% (n = 285), and 75 (7.9%) of these patients required renal replacement therapy. AKI stratified by increased RIFLE class was associated with worse postoperative outcomes (prolonged intubation, length of hospital stay and mortality; P < 0.001 for each variable). For patients with AKI, odds ratio for mortality was 4.2 [95% confidence interval (CI) 3.2-5.4, P < 0.001; area under receiver operating curves 0.85 (95% CI 0.80-0.91)], and 2.3 (95% CI 1.9-2.9, P < 0.001) for prolonged intubation for each increase in RIFLE class. Independent risk factors for AKI were older age, male gender, previous surgery, preoperative anaemia, length of cardiopulmonary bypass and TV replacement. Importantly, preoperative creatinine and pulmonary artery pressure were not independently associated with AKI. CONCLUSIONS TV surgery carries a high incidence of postoperative AKI that is associated with adverse outcome. The use of the RIFLE criteria allows comparison with prior studies and is an important predictor of early mortality. The estimation of patient risk for AKI should be based on multivariable predictio

    Non-Linear Optimization Applied to Angle-of-Arrival Satellite-Based Geolocation

    Get PDF
Geolocation is a common application for satellite systems. This involves estimating an object\u27s location (herein called the subject) based on noisy satellite data. Many geolocation methods exist; however, none are tailored specifically for the unique problems faced by satellite systems. Some satellites are so far from the subject being localized that by the time the satellite receives a signal from the subject it might have moved appreciably. Furthermore, some satellites or terrestrial sensors may be much closer to the subject than others. Therefore, sensors may need to be weighted based upon their distance to the subject being localized. In addition, even if a subject can be localized, the confidence in this localization may be unknown. Non-linear optimization is proposed, implemented, and analyzed as a means of geolocating objects and providing confidence estimates from passive satellite line-of-sight data. Non-linear optimization requires an initial estimate. This estimate is provided by a triangulation method. The non-linear optimization then improves upon this estimate iteratively by finding estimates that are more likely to have produced the observed line-of-sight measurements. The covariance matrix of the geolocation parameters being estimated is naturally produced by the optimization which provides quantified confidence in the geolocation estimate. Simulations are developed to provide a means of evaluating the performance of the non-linear optimization algorithm. It was found that non-linear optimization can reduce the average error in geolocation estimates, provide improved estimation confidence, and accurately estimate its geolocation confidence for some subjects. The results from the theoretical development of the non-linear optimization algorithm and its simulated performance is quantified and discussed

Rate-equation calculations of the current flow through two-site molecular device and DNA-based junction

Here we present the calculations of incoherent current flowing through the two-site molecular device as well as the DNA-based junction within the rate-equation approach. Few interesting phenomena are discussed in detail. Structural asymmetry of two-site molecule results in rectification effect, which can be neutralized by asymmetric voltage drop at the molecule-metal contacts due to coupling asymmetry. The results received for poly(dG)-poly(dC) DNA molecule reveal the coupling- and temperature-independent saturation effect of the current at high voltages, where for short chains we establish the inverse square distance dependence. Besides, we document the shift of the conductance peak in the direction to higher voltages due to the temperature decrease.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

Importance of implant technique on risk of major paravalvular leak (PVL) after St. Jude mechanical heart valve replacement: a report from the Artificial Valve Endocarditis Reduction Trial (AVERT)

    Get PDF
Objective: To examine risk factors for major paravalvular leak (PVL) events after mechanical heart valve replacement. Methods: We analyzed outcome of 807 patients randomized into the Artificial Valve Endocarditis Reduction Trial (AVERT). The mean follow-up time was 30.6 months and 21 major PVL events were reported. Three additional major PVL events associated with endocarditis were excluded from analysis. All baseline medical history variables, as well as operative parameters (including use of pledgets and suture technique) were examined using Cox regression. Results: Major PVL was reported after 11 aortic, 9 mitral, and 1 double valve replacement. 6/404 (1.5%) patients with conventional valves experienced a major PVL event versus 15/403 (3.7%) in the Silzone group. 10/172 (5.8%) patients with valve suture technique without pledgets experienced a major PVL event versus 11/635 (1.7%) patients with pledgets. Final multivariable model showed that only suture technique without pledgets (p = 0.005) was an independent significant risk factor for major PVL events. Silzone cuff showed a strong trend (p = 0.055). Conclusions: Suture technique without pledgets is an independent significant risk factor for major PVL events. In this study, use of pledgets during valve replacement had a protective effect against subsequent paravalvular leak, supporting the use of buttress reinforcement for valve suture. The use of Silzone cuff, although not statistically significant, showed a strong trend as a risk facto

What influences real estate volatility in Hong Kong? An ARMA-GARCH approach

    Get PDF
Purpose: This paper aims to examine real estate price volatility in Hong Kong. Monthly data on housing, offices, retail and factories in Hong Kong were analyzed from February 1993 to February 2019 to test whether volatility clusters are present in the real estate market. Real estate price determinants were also investigated. / Design/methodology/approach: Autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity–Lagrange multiplier test is used to examine the volatility clustering effects in these four kinds of real estate. An autoregressive and moving average model–generalized auto regressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model was used to identify real estate price volatility determinants in Hong Kong. / Findings: There was volatility clustering in all four kinds of real estate. Determinants of price volatility vary among different types of real estate. In general, housing volatility in Hong Kong is influenced primarily by the foreign exchange rate (both RMB and USD), whereas commercial real estate is largely influenced by unemployment. The results of the exponential GARCH model show that there were no asymmetric effects in the Hong Kong real estate market. / Research limitations/implications: This volatility pattern has important implications for investors and policymakers. Residential and commercial real estate have different volatility determinants; investors may benefit from this when building a portfolio. The analysis and results are limited by the lack of data on real estate price determinants. / Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first study that evaluates volatility in the Hong Kong real estate market using the GARCH class model. Also, this paper is the first to investigate commercial real estate price determinants
