    Reasoning about evaluative traits was investigated among a group of 7- and 8-year-olds (N = 34), a group of 11- to 13-year olds (N = 25), and a group of adults (N = 23) to determine whether their inferences would be sensitive to the valence of social and academic traits. Four aspects of trait-relevant beliefs were examined: (1) malleability, (2) stability over time, (3) origin in terms of nature versus nurture, and (4) an inference criterion that concerns how readily traits are inferred. Although there was evidence of an age-related decrease in the tendency to emphasize positive information, participants of all ages responded that positive traits are less malleable and more stable over time than negative traits, that the positive influences of biological and environmental factors are likely to override the negative influences, and that competence can be more readily inferred from positive outcomes than from negative outcomes

    A quantum computer is proposed in which information is stored in the two lowest electronic states of doped quantum dots (QDs). Many QDs are located in a microcavity. A pair of gates controls the energy levels in each QD. A Controlled Not (CNOT) operation involving any pair of QDs can be effected by a sequence of gate-voltage pulses which tune the QD energy levels into resonance with frequencies of the cavity or a laser.     Strain and dynamic measurements using fiber optic sensors embedded into graphite/epoxy tubes

    Graphite/epoxy tubes were fabricated with embedded optical fibers to evaluate the feasibility of monitoring strains with a fiber optic technique. Resistance strain gauges were attached to the tubes to measure strain at four locations along the tube for comparison with the fiber optic sensors. Both static and dynamic strain measurements were made with excellent agreement between the embedded fiber optic strain sensor and the strain gauges. Strain measurements of 10(exp -7) can be detected with the optical phase locked loop (OPLL) system using optical fiber. Because of their light weight, compatibility with composites, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and based on the static and dynamic results obtained, fiber optic sensors embedded in composites may be useful as the sensing component of smart structures

    Delipidating in vitro-produced bovine zygotes: effect on further development and consequences for freezability

    To study the effect of partial removal of intracytoplasmatic lipids from bovine zygotes on their in vitro and in vivo survival, presumptive zygotes were delipidated by micromanipulation and cocultured with Veto cells in B2+10% FCS. Blastocyst rates of delipidated (n=960), sham (centrifuged but not delipidated, n=830) and control embryos (n=950) were 42.1, 42.3 and 39.9% respectively (P > 0.05). Day 7 blastocysts derived from delipidated zygotes had a mean of 123.9 + 45.6 nuclei compared to 137.5 + 32.9 for control blastocysts (P > 0.05). The full-term development of delipidated blastocysts after single transfer to recipients was similar to that of control IVF blastocysts (41.2% vs 45.4% respectively). To assess the effect of delipidation on the embryo tolerance to freczing/thawing, delipidated (n=73), control (n=67) and shmn (n=50) Day 7 blastocysts were frozen in 1.36 M glycerol + 0.25 M sucrose in PBS. After thawing, embryos were cocultured for 72 h with Vero cells in B2+10% FCS. Survival rates at 24 h were not significantly different between groups. However, in the delipidated group, the survival rate after 48 h in culture was significantly higher than in the control group (56.2 vs 39.8, P < 0.02), resulting in a higher hatching rate after 3 days in culture (45.2 vs 22.4, P < 0.02). Pregnancy rates for delipidated and control frozen/thawed embryos were respectively 10.5 and 22.2% (P > 0.05). Electron microscopic observations showed much fewer lipid droplets (and smaller) in delipated blastocysts than in controls. Taken together, our data show that delipidation of one cell stage bovine embryos is compatible with their normal development to term and has a beneficial effect on their tolerance to freezing and thawing at the blastocyst stage. This procedure, however, alters the developmental potential of such blastocysts, suggesting that maternally inherited lipid stores interfere with metabolic recovery after thawing

    Long-Term Outcomes of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adolescent Body Dysmorphic Disorder

    Emerging evidence suggests that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious treatment for adolescent body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in the short term, but longer-term outcomes remain unknown. The current study aimed to follow up a group of adolescents who had originally participated in a randomized controlled trial of CBT for BDD to determine whether treatment gains were maintained. Twenty-six adolescents (mean age = 16.2, SD = 1.6) with a primary diagnosis of BDD received a course of developmentally tailored CBT and were followed up over 12 months. Participants were assessed at baseline, midtreatment, posttreatment, 2-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up. The primary outcome measure was the clinician-rated Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale Modified for BDD. Secondary outcomes included measures of insight, depression, quality of life, and global functioning. BDD symptoms decreased significantly from pre- to posttreatment and remained stable over the 12-month follow-up. At this time point, 50% of participants were classified as responders and 23% as remitters. Participants remained significantly improved on all secondary outcomes at 12-month follow-up. Neither baseline insight nor baseline depression predicted long-term outcomes. The positive effects of CBT appear to be durable up to 12-month follow-up. However, the majority of patients remained symptomatic and vulnerable to a range of risks at 12-month follow-up, indicating that longer-term monitoring is advisable in this population. Future research should focus on enhancing the efficacy of CBT in order to improve long-term outcomes.Full Tex

    The short term debt vs. long term debt puzzle: a model for the optimal mix

    This paper argues that the existing finance literature is inadequate with respect to its coverage of capital structure of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). In particular it is argued that the cost of equity (being both conceptually ill defined and empirically non quantifiable) is not applicable to the capital structure decisions for a large proportion of SMEs and the optimal capital structure depends only on the mix of short and long term debt. The paper then presents a model, developed by practitioners for optimising the debt mix and demonstrates its practical application using an Italian firm's debt structure as a case study
