Probing the centre of the large circumstellar disc in M17
We investigated the nature of the hitherto unresolved elliptical infrared
emission in the centre of the ~20000 AU disc silhouette in M 17. We combined
high-resolution JHKsL'M' band imaging carried out with NAOS/CONICA at the VLT
with [Fe II] narrow band imaging using SOFI at the NTT. The analysis is
supported by Spitzer/GLIMPSE archival data and by already published SINFONI/VLT
Integral Field Spectroscopy data. For the first time, we resolve the elongated
central infrared emission into a point-source and a jet-like feature that
extends to the northeast in the opposite direction of the recently discovered
collimated H2 jet. They are both orientated almost perpendicular to the disc
plane. In addition, our images reveal a curved southwestern emission nebula
whose morphology resembles that of the previously detected northeastern one.
Both nebulae are located at a distance of 1500 AU from the disc centre. We
describe the infrared point-source in terms of a protostar that is embedded in
circumstellar material producing a visual extinction of 60 <= Av <= 82. The
observed Ks band magnitude is equivalent to a stellar mass range of 2.8 Msun <=
Mstar <= 8 Msun adopting conversions for a main-sequence star. Altogether, we
suggest that the large M 17 accretion disc is forming an intermediate to
high-mass protostar. Part of the accreted material is expelled through a

Impact and oviposition behaviour of Ageniaspis fuscicollis (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), a polyembryonic parasitoid of the apple ermine moth, Yponomeuta malinellus (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae)
The distribution and extent of parasitism of the apple ermine moth Yponomeuta malinellus Zeller by the polyembyronic encyrtid parasitoid Ageniaspis fuscicollis (Dalman) were examined in a three year field study and related to oviposition behaviour in the laboratory. Ageniaspis fuscicollis attacks egg batches of its host and kills the final instar larvae, which feed gregariously from within tents. Host population densities in the field were low, from 1.5 to 2.2 tents per 100 leaf clusters, and parasitism increased from 7.8% to 18% over the three year period. Parasitism was independent of host density at the whole tree scale, but at the individual tent scale, the probability of a tent containing parasitized host larvae increased and percent parasitism decreased with the number of host larvae per tent. Observations on the oviposition behaviour of A. fuscicollis in the laboratory revealed that parasitoids distributed their eggs randomly within host egg batches. On average, they spent almost two hours on an egg batch and laid 44% of their egg load of 132 eggs into the first egg batch visited, leading to a mean of 1.4 eggs laid per host egg through frequent self-superparasitism of hosts. The percentage of eggs receiving one or more ovipositions was independent of the size of an egg batch, contradicting our field observations of inverse density dependence. Predicting survival from colorectal cancer histology slides using deep learning: A retrospective multicenter study
BACKGROUND: For virtually every patient with colorectal cancer (CRC), hematoxylin-eosin (HE)-stained tissue slides are available. These images contain quantitative information, which is not routinely used to objectively extract prognostic biomarkers. In the present study, we investigated whether deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can extract prognosticators directly from these widely available images.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We hand-delineated single-tissue regions in 86 CRC tissue slides, yielding more than 100,000 HE image patches, and used these to train a CNN by transfer learning, reaching a nine-class accuracy of >94% in an independent data set of 7,180 images from 25 CRC patients. With this tool, we performed automated tissue decomposition of representative multitissue HE images from 862 HE slides in 500 stage I-IV CRC patients in the The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cohort, a large international multicenter collection of CRC tissue. Based on the output neuron activations in the CNN, we calculated a "deep stroma score," which was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) in a multivariable Cox proportional hazard model (hazard ratio [HR] with 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.99 [1.27-3.12], p = 0.0028), while in the same cohort, manual quantification of stromal areas and a gene expression signature of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) were only prognostic in specific tumor stages. We validated these findings in an independent cohort of 409 stage I-IV CRC patients from the "Darmkrebs: Chancen der Verhütung durch Screening" (DACHS) study who were recruited between 2003 and 2007 in multiple institutions in Germany. Again, the score was an independent prognostic factor for OS (HR 1.63 [1.14-2.33], p = 0.008), CRC-specific OS (HR 2.29 [1.5-3.48], p = 0.0004), and relapse-free survival (RFS; HR 1.92 [1.34-2.76], p = 0.0004). A prospective validation is required before this biomarker can be implemented in clinical workflows.
CONCLUSIONS: In our retrospective study, we show that a CNN can assess the human tumor microenvironment and predict prognosis directly from histopathological images
The {\eta}'-carbon potential at low meson momenta
The production of mesons in coincidence with forward-going
protons has been studied in photon-induced reactions on C and on a
liquid hydrogen (LH) target for incoming photon energies of 1.3-2.6 GeV at
the electron accelerator ELSA. The mesons have been identified
via the decay
registered with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system. Coincident protons have been
identified in the MiniTAPS BaF array at polar angles of . Under these kinematic constraints the
mesons are produced with relatively low kinetic energy (
150 MeV) since the coincident protons take over most of the momentum of the
incident-photon beam. For the C-target this allows the determination of the
real part of the -carbon potential at low meson momenta by
comparing with collision model calculations of the kinetic energy
distribution and excitation function. Fitting the latter data for
mesons going backwards in the center-of-mass system yields a potential depth of
V = (44 16(stat)15(syst)) MeV, consistent with earlier
determinations of the potential depth in inclusive measurements for average
momenta of 1.1 GeV/. Within the experimental
uncertainties, there is no indication of a momentum dependence of the
-carbon potential. The LH data, taken as a reference to check
the data analysis and the model calculations, provide differential and integral
cross sections in good agreement with previous results for

Star Formation Activity in the Galactic HII Complex S255-S257
We present results on the star-formation activity of an optically obscured
region containing an embedded cluster (S255-IR) and molecular gas between two
evolved HII regions S255 and S257. We have studied the complex using optical,
near-infrared (NIR) imaging, optical spectroscopy and radio continnum mapping
at 15 GHz, along with Spitzer-IRAC results. It is found that the main exciting
sources of the evolved HII regions S255 and S257 and the compact HII regions
associated with S255-IR are of O9.5 - B3 V nature, consistent with previous
observations. Our NIR observations reveal 109 likely young stellar object (YSO)
candidates in an area of ~ 4'.9 x 4'.9 centered on S255-IR, which include 69
new YSO candidates. Our observations increased the number of previously
identified YSOs in this region by 32%. To see the global star formation, we
constructed the V-I/V diagram for 51 optically identified IRAC YSOs in an area
of ~ 13' x 13' centered on S255-IR. We suggest that these YSOs have an
approximate age between 0.1 - 4 Myr, indicating a non-coeval star formation.
Using spectral energy distribution models, we constrained physical properties
and evolutionary status of 31 and 16 YSO candidates outside and inside the gas
ridge, respectively. The models suggest that the sources associated within the
gas ridge are of younger population (mean age ~ 1.2 Myr) than the sources
outside the gas ridge (mean age ~ 2.5 Myr). The positions of the young sources
inside the gas ridge at the interface of the HII regions S255 and S257, favor a

High statistics study of the reaction
The photoproduction of 2 mesons off protons was studied with the
Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn. The
energy of photons produced in a radiator was tagged in the energy range from
600\,MeV to 2.5\,GeV. Differential and total cross sections and
Dalitz plots are presented. Part of the data was taken with a diamond radiator
producing linearly polarized photons, and beam asymmetries were derived.
Properties of nucleon and resonances contributing to the
final state were determined within the BnGa partial wave analysis. The data
presented here allow us to determine branching ratios of nucleon and
resonances for their decays into via several intermediate states.

Candidate X-ray-Emitting OB Stars in the Carina Nebula Identified Via Infrared Spectral Energy Distributions
We report the results of a new survey of massive, OB stars throughout the
Carina Nebula using the X-ray point source catalog provided by the Chandra
Carina Complex Project (CCCP) in conjunction with infrared (IR) photometry from
the Two Micron All-Sky Survey and the Spitzer Space Telescope Vela--Carina
survey. Mid-IR photometry is relatively unaffected by extinction, hence it
provides strong constraints on the luminosities of OB stars, assuming that
their association with the Carina Nebula, and hence their distance, is
confirmed. We fit model stellar atmospheres to the optical (UBV) and IR
spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 182 OB stars with known spectral types
and measure the bolometric luminosity and extinction for each star. We find
that the extinction law measured toward the OB stars has two components:
Av=1--1.5 mag produced by foreground dust with a ratio of total-to-selective
absorption Rv=3.1 plus a contribution from local dust with Rv>4.0 in the Carina
molecular clouds that increases as Av increases. Using X-ray emission as a
strong indicator of association with Carina, we identify 94 candidate OB stars
with Lbol\geq10^4 Lsun by fitting their IR SEDs. If the candidate OB stars are
eventually confirmed by follow-up spectroscopic observations, the number of
cataloged OB stars in the Carina Nebula will increase by ~50%. Correcting for
incompleteness due to OB stars falling below the Lbol cutoff or the CCCP
detection limit, these results potentially double the size of the young massive

Photoproduction of eta mesons from the neutron: cross sections and double polarization observable E
Photoproduction of mesons from neutrons} \abstract{Results from
measurements of the photoproduction of mesons from quasifree protons and
neutrons are summarized. The experiments were performed with the CBELSA/TAPS
detector at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn using the
decay. A liquid deuterium target was used for the
measurement of total cross sections and angular distributions. The results
confirm earlier measurements from Bonn and the MAMI facility in Mainz about the
existence of a narrow structure in the excitation function of . The current angular distributions show a forward-backward
asymmetry, which was previously not seen, but was predicted by model
calculations including an additional narrow state. Furthermore, data
obtained with a longitudinally polarized, deuterated butanol target and a
circularly polarized photon beam were analyzed to determine the double
polarization observable . Both data sets together were also used to extract
the helicity dependent cross sections and . The
narrow structure in the excitation function of
appears associated with the helicity-1/2 component of the reaction
Photoproduction of meson pairs: First measurement of the polarization observable I^s
The polarization observable I^s, a feature exclusive to the acoplanar
kinematics of multi-meson final states produced via linearly polarized photons,
has been measured for the first time. Results for the reaction g p -> p pi0 eta
are presented for incoming photon energies between 970 MeV and 1650 MeV along
with the beam asymmetry I^c. The comparably large asymmetries demonstrate a
high sensitivity of I^s to the dynamics of the reaction. Fits using
Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis demonstrate that the new polarization

Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons of the neutron
Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron
has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up
to 2.5 GeV at the Bonn ELSA accelerator. The eta-mesons have been detected in
coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons, which allows a detailed
comparison of the quasi-free n(gamma,eta)n and p(gamma,eta)p reactions. The
excitation function for eta-production off the neutron shows a pronounced
bump-like structure at W=1.68 GeV (E_g ~ 1 GeV), which is absent for the
