    Observations of V592 Cas -— an Outflow at Optical Wavelengths

    We present new red optical spectra of V592 Cas aimed at exploring the properties of the outflow of this system in a spectral region where the underlying white dwarf and the accretion disk do not contribute significantly to the observed absorption components of the Hα and He I line profiles. We use the Hα emission line to study the wind, which appears as pronounced blueshifted P Cygni absorption troughs whose low velocity end contaminates the blue side of the emission line profile. The wind appears to be episodic in nature, with multiple events reaching velocities of 5000 km s^–1 in Hα. Similar (but weaker) wind signatures appear in the He I 5876 Å line but are absent in He I 6678 Å. Our data suggest that during wind episodes the wind is phase dependent and is visible for half of the orbit of the system. Considering that V592 Cas is viewed almost face-on, the symmetry axis of the outflow cannot be orthogonal to the disk and/or the outflow must have some other inherent asymmetry in outflow geometry. A possible origin of the wind is in a disk hotspot, either at the initial impact point of the accretion stream on the disk edge or as a result of disk overflow (similar to SW Sextantis stars). Simultaneous optical photometry during one night of our spectroscopic observations indicate that there is no clear relationship between the optical brightness variations and the strength of the outflow in this system

    The Photometric Period and Variability of the Cataclysmic Variable V849 Herculis (PG 1633+115)

    We report time-resolved photometry of the cataclysmic variable V849 Her, and measure a period of 0.1414 \pm 0.0030 days (3.394 \pm 0.072 hours). We also present photometry taken over several weeks in 2010 and 2011, as well as light curves from 1995 to 2011 by the American Association of Variable Star Observers. The spectra, absolute magnitude derived from infrared magnitudes, and variability all suggest that V849 Her is a nova-like variable. The shallow (0.5-magnitude) low states we observe resemble the erratic low states of the VY Sculptoris stars, although they may recur quasi-periodically over an average cycle of 12.462 \pm 0.074 days.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in New Astronom

    We point out that the correlation between folding times and σ=(TθTf)/Tθ\sigma = (T_{\theta } - T_{f})/T_{\theta } in protein-like heteropolymer models where TθT_{\theta } and TfT_{f} are the collapse and folding transition temperatures was already established in 1993 before the other presumed equivalent criterion (folding times correlating with TfT_{f} alone) was suggested.     Non-clasical Nucleation in Supercooled Nickel

    The dynamics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of crystalline nickel from the super-cooled melt is examined during rapid quenching using molecular dynamics and a modified embedded atom method potential. The character of the critical nuclei of the crystallization transition is examined using common neighbor analysis and visualization. At nucleation the saddle point droplet consists of randomly stacked planar structures with an in plane triangular order. These results are consistent with previous theoretical results that predict that the nucleation process in some metals is non-classical due to the presence of long-range forces and a spinodal.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    We show that the problem of non conservation of energy found in the spontaneous localization model developed by Ghirardi, Rimini and Weber is very similar to the inconsistency between the stochastic models for turbulence and the Navier-Stokes equation.     Partisan Asymmetries in Online Political Activity

    We examine partisan differences in the behavior, communication patterns and social interactions of more than 18,000 politically-active Twitter users to produce evidence that points to changing levels of partisan engagement with the American online political landscape. Analysis of a network defined by the communication activity of these users in proximity to the 2010 midterm congressional elections reveals a highly segregated, well clustered partisan community structure. Using cluster membership as a high-fidelity (87% accuracy) proxy for political affiliation, we characterize a wide range of differences in the behavior, communication and social connectivity of left- and right-leaning Twitter users. We find that in contrast to the online political dynamics of the 2008 campaign, right-leaning Twitter users exhibit greater levels of political activity, a more tightly interconnected social structure, and a communication network topology that facilitates the rapid and broad dissemination of political information.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 6 table

    Thermal expansion in small metal clusters and its impact on the electric polarizability

    The thermal expansion coefficients of NaN\mathrm{Na}_{N} clusters with 8N408 \le N \le 40 and Al7\mathrm{Al}_{7}, Al13\mathrm{Al}_{13}^- and Al14\mathrm{Al}_{14}^- are obtained from {\it ab initio} Born-Oppenheimer LDA molecular dynamics. Thermal expansion of small metal clusters is considerably larger than that in the bulk and size-dependent. We demonstrate that the average static electric dipole polarizability of Na clusters depends linearly on the mean interatomic distance and only to a minor extent on the detailed ionic configuration when the overall shape of the electron density is enforced by electronic shell effects. The polarizability is thus a sensitive indicator for thermal expansion. We show that taking this effect into account brings theoretical and experimental polarizabilities into quantitative agreement.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, one table.     The component masses of the cataclysmic variable V347 Puppis

    We present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the double-lined eclipsing cataclysmic variable V347 Pup (=LB 1800). There is evidence of irradiation on the inner hemisphere of the secondary star, which we correct for using a model to give a secondary-star radial velocity of KR= 198 ± 5 km s−1. The rotational velocity of the secondary star in V347 Pup is found to be v sin i= 131 ± 5 km s−1 and the system inclination is i= 840 ± 23. From these parameters we obtain masses of M1= 0.63 ± 0.04 M⊙ for the white dwarf primary and M2= 0.52 ± 0.06 M⊙ for the M0.5V secondary star, giving a mass ratio of q= 0.83 ± 0.05. On the basis of the component masses, and the spectral type and radius of the secondary star in V347 Pup, we find tentative evidence for an evolved companion. V347 Pup shows many of the characteristics of the SW Sex stars, exhibiting single-peaked emission lines, high-velocity S-wave components and phase-offsets in the radial velocity curve. We find spiral arms in the accretion disc of V347 Pup and measure the disc radius to be close to the maximum allowed in a pressureless disc
