Electric field sensing near the surface microstructure of an atom chip using cold Rydberg atoms
The electric fields near the heterogeneous metal/dielectric surface of an
atom chip were measured using cold atoms. The atomic sensitivity to electric
fields was enhanced by exciting the atoms to Rydberg states that are 10^8 times
more polarizable than the ground state. We attribute the measured fields to
charging of the insulators between the atom chip wires. Surprisingly, it is
observed that these fields may be dramatically lowered with appropriate voltage
biasing, suggesting configurations for the future development of hybrid quantum

Coherent manipulation of cold Rydberg atoms near the surface of an atom chip
Coherent superpositions of the 49s and 48s Rydberg states of cold Rb atoms
were studied near the surface of an atom chip. The superpositions were created
and manipulated using microwaves resonant with the two-photon 49s-48s
transition. Coherent behavior was observed using Rabi flopping, Ramsey
sequences, spin-echo and spin-locking. These results are discussed in the
context of Rydberg atoms as electric field noise sensors. We consider the
coherence of systems quadratically coupled to noise fields with 1/f^k power

An Ecological Risk Model for Early Childhood Anxiety: The Importance of Early Child Symptoms and Temperament
Childhood anxiety is impairing and associated with later emotional disorders. Studying risk factors for child anxiety may allow earlier identification of at-risk children for prevention efforts. This study applied an ecological risk model to address how early childhood anxiety symptoms, child temperament, maternal anxiety and depression symptoms, violence exposure, and sociodemographic risk factors predict school-aged anxiety symptoms. This longitudinal, prospective study was conducted in a representative birth cohort (n=1109). Structural equation modeling was used to examine hypothesized associations between risk factors measured in toddlerhood/preschool (age=3.0 years) and anxiety symptoms measured in kindergarten (age=6.0 years) and second grade (age= 8.0 years). Early child risk factors (anxiety symptoms and temperament) emerged as the most robust predictor for both parent-and child-reported anxiety outcomes and mediated the effects of maternal and family risk factors. Implications for early intervention and prevention studies are discussed
KIC 2856960: the impossible triple star
KIC 2856960 is a star in the Kepler field which was observed by Kepler for 4
years. It shows the primary and secondary eclipses of a close binary of 0.258d
as well as complex dipping events that last for about 1.5d at a time and recur
on a 204d period. The dips are thought to result when the close binary passes
across the face of a third star. In this paper we present an attempt to model
the dips. Despite the apparent simplicity of the system and strenuous efforts
to find a solution, we find that we cannot match the dips with a triple star
while satisfying Kepler's laws. The problem is that to match the dips the
separation of the close binary has to be larger than possible relative to the
outer orbit given the orbital periods. Quadruple star models can get round this
problem but require the addition of a so-far undetected intermediate period of
order 5 -- 20d that has be a near-perfect integer divisor of the outer 204d
period. Although we have no good explanation for KIC 2856960, using the full
set of Kepler data we are able to update several of its parameters. We also
present a spectrum showing that KIC 2856960 is dominated by light from a K3- or

Patterns of anxiety symptoms in toddlers and preschool-age children: Evidence of early differentiation
The degree to which young children’s anxiety symptoms differentiate according to diagnostic groupings is under-studied, especially in children below the age of 4 years. Theoretical (confirmatory factor analysis, CFA) and statistical (exploratory factor analysis, EFA) analytical methods were employed to test the hypothesis that anxiety symptoms among 2–3-year-old children from a non-clinical, representative sample would differentiate in a manner consistent with current diagnostic nosology. Anxiety symptom items were selected from two norm-referenced parent-report scales of child behavior. CFA and EFA results suggested that anxiety symptoms aggregate in a manner consistent with generalized anxiety, obsessive–compulsive symptoms, separation anxiety, and social phobia. Multi-dimensional models achieved good model fit and fit the data significantly better than undifferentiated models. Results from EFA and CFA methods were predominantly consistent and supported the grouping of early childhood anxiety symptoms into differentiated, diagnostic-specific categories
