Solar neutrinos as background in dark matter searches involving electron detection
In the present work we estimate the potential background of solar neutrinos
on electron detectors. These detectors are considered relevant for detecting
light dark matter particles in the MeV region, currently sought by experiments.
We find that the copious low energy pp neutrinos are a dangerous background at
the energies involved in these experiments, in fact close to the anticipated
event rate, while the more energetic Boron neutrinos are harmlessComment: 12 pages, 5 figures, Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle

Multi-cell battery protection system
A multi-cell battery protection system is described wherein each cell has its own individual protective circuit. The protective circuits consist of a solid state comparator unit and a high current switching device such as a relay. The comparator units each continuously monitor the associated cell and when the cell voltage either exceeds a predetermined high level or falls below a predetermined low level, the relay is actuated whereby a bypass circuit is completed across the cell thereby effectively removing the cell from the series of cells
The total nucleon-nucleon cross section at large N_c
It is shown that at sufficiently large for incident momenta which are
much larger than the QCD, the total nucleon-nucleon cross section is
independent of incident momentum and given by . This result is valid in the extreme large
regime of and has corrections of relative order . A possible connection of this result to the
Froissart-Martin bound is discussed.Comment: 4 page
Electrode erosion in steady-state electric propulsion engines
The anode and cathode of a 30 kW class arcjet engine were sectioned and analyzed. This arcjet was operated for a total time of 573 hr at power levels between 25 and 30 kW with ammonia at flow rates of 0.25 and 0.27 gm/s. The accumulated run time was sufficient to clearly establish erosion patterns and their causes. The type of electron emission from various parts of the cathode surface was made clear by scanning electron microscope analysis. A scanning electron microscope was used to study recrystallization on the hot anode surface. These electrodes were made of 2 percent thoriated tungsten and the surface thorium content and gradient perpendicular to the surfaces was determined by quantitative microprobe analysis. The results of this material analysis on the electrodes and recommendations for improving electrode operational life time are presented
Workplace Safety Policy: Past, Present, and Future
With an annual budget of about 210 billion per year, that workers receive for accepting job-related health hazards give employers a stronger economic incentive to eliminate workplace health and safety hazards than the $132 million per year in fines imposed by OSHA and its state counterparts for violations of workplace safety standards. Because of the heterogeneity of workers and firms, we argue that public policy should expand the economic incentives for workplace safety while allowing firms and workers freedom to discover on their own the best ways to improve workplace safety.
Risk measurement: an introduction to value at risk
This paper is a self-contained introduction to the concept and methodology of "value at risk," which is a new tool for measuring an entity's exposure to market risk. We explain the concept of value at risk, and then describe in detail the three methods for computing it: historical simulation; the variance-covariance method; and Monte Carlo or stochastic simulation. We then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the three methods for computing value at risk. Finally, we briefly describe some alternative measures of market risk.Risk and Uncertainty,
Status of the Pacific Mackerel resource during 1997 and management recommendations for the fishery
Based on a California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) projected biomass estimate of 91,200 metric tons for July 1, 1997, the recommended commercial fishery quota for the 1997/98 fishing season is 22,000 metric tons. Age-specific abundance for 1996 was estimated using output from a stock
assessment model called ADEPT and certain assumptions about growth and fishing mortality during the first half of 1997. In this year's assessment, abundance estimates made by ADEPT were expanded back in time to cover the 68-year period of 1929 through 1996. The commercial fishery quota recommendation is based upon the prescribed harvest formula for Pacific mackerel that is specified in the California Fish and Game Code.
Several sources of information are available for the Pacific mackerel stock, all of which suggest a smaller biomass than was present in the 1980's. Landings from both California and Ensenada, Mexico have sharply decreased and catch rates from the southern California Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel (CPFV) fleet have declined. Fishery-independent indices of abundance from aerial spotter observations and California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) ichthyoplankton surveys show similar trends.
The 1997 biomass estimate is higher than last year's estimate of 47,160 metric tons because data added to the model this year increased abundance for fish of 1994 and older year classes (age 2+). This year's results indicate there were more fish in the older year classes than estimated in previous assessments. (27pp.
Testing the Standard Model by precision measurement of the weak charges of quarks
In a global analysis of the latest parity-violating electron scattering
measurements on nuclear targets, we demonstrate a significant improvement in
the experimental knowledge of the weak neutral-current lepton-quark
interactions at low energy. The precision of this new result, combined with
earlier atomic parity-violation measurements, places tight constraints on the
size of possible contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model.
Consequently, this result improves the lower-bound on the scale of relevant new
physics to ~1 TeV.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; v2: further details on extraction of electroweak
