The Quark Structure of Pentaquarks
Motivated by the possible observation of the , we study the
quark structure of pentaquark states in quenched lattice QCD. The complete set
of 19 local sources that have the proper symmetry for positive or negative
parity isoscalar pentaquarks is constructed, as well as a nonlocal source
composed of two displaced ``good'' diquarks. Quantitative structure information
is determined from diagonalizing the 19-dimensional correlation matrix and from
calculating the overlaps of sources with the lattice eigenstates. The volume
dependence of the overlap is studied to differentiate between scattering and
localized resonant states. The positive parity state has a small component of
two ``good'' diquarks, and its energy is too much higher than the negative

Estimating Lattice Artifacts from Flowed SU(2) Calorons
Lattice computations of the high-temperature topological susceptibility of
QCD receive lattice-spacing corrections and suffer from systematics arising
from the type and depth of gradient flow. We study the lattice spacing
corrections to semi-analytically by exploring the behavior
of discretized Harrington-Shepard calorons under the action of different forms
of gradient flow. From our study we conclude that is definitely
too small of a time extent to study the theory at temperatures of order
and we explore how the amount of gradient flow influences the

Scaling up antiretroviral therapy in Malawi-implications for managing other chronic diseases in resource-limited countries.
The national scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Malawi is based on the public health approach, with principles and practices borrowed from the successful DOTS (directly observed treatment, short course) tuberculosis control framework. The key principles include political commitment, free care, and standardized systems for case finding, treatment, recording and reporting, and drug procurement. Scale-up of ART started in June 2004, and by December 2008, 223,437 patients were registered for treatment within a health system that is severely underresourced. The Malawi model for delivering lifelong ART can be adapted and used for managing patients with chronic noncommunicable diseases, the burden of which is already high and continues to grow in low-income and middle-income countries. This article discusses how the principles behind the successful Malawi model of ART delivery can be applied to the management of other chronic diseases in resource-limited settings and how this paradigm can be used for health systems strengthening
The 'new' rhetoric of new labour in comparative perspective: a three-country discourse analysis
Over the last two decades, social democratic-labour parties (SDLPs) have been confronted by various challenges which have had a dramatic impact upon their ideological orientation. Not least of which, these include emerging challenger parties, as well as the Neo-Liberal discourse of the New Right. In this paper, we compare the ideological positioning of three parties in Sweden, Germany, and particularly in Great Britain. We conclude that the ideological profile of 'New Labour' now largely mirrors those of other SDLPs. The results are based upon a content analysis of the 1994 (Germany and Sweden) and 1997 (Great Britain) election rhetorics in party manifestos and television debates. The analysis centres on the extent to which the three SDLPs refer to the discourses of Socialism, the Welfare State, Neo-Liberalism, and Ecologism
The Path Integral for 1+1-dimensional QCD
We derive a path integral expression for the transition amplitude in
1+1-dimensional QCD starting from canonically quantized QCD. Gauge fixing after
quantization leads to a formulation in terms of gauge invariant but curvilinear
variables. Remainders of the curved space are Jacobians, an effective
potential, and sign factors just as for the problem of a particle in a box.
Based on this result we derive a Faddeev-Popov like expression for the
transition amplitude avoiding standard infinities that are caused by

First IBEX observations of the terrestrial plasma sheet and a possible disconnection event
The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission has recently provided the first all-sky maps of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) emitted from the edge of the heliosphere as well as the first observations of ENAs from the Moon and from the magnetosheath stagnation region at the nose of the magnetosphere. This study provides the first IBEX images of the ENA emissions from the nightside magnetosphere and plasma sheet. We show images from two IBEX orbits: one that displays typical plasma sheet emissions, which correlate reasonably well with a model magnetic field, and a second that shows a significant intensification that may indicate a near-Earth (similar to 10 R(E) behind the Earth) disconnection event. IBEX observations from similar to 0.5-6 keV indicate the simultaneous addition of both a hot (several keV) and colder (similar to 700 eV) component during the intensification; if IBEX directly observed magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail, the hot component may signify the plasma energization
Density functional electronic spectrum of the cluster and possible local Jahn-Teller distorsions in the La-Ba-Cu-O superconductor
We present a density functional theory (DFT) calculation in the generalized
gradient approximation to study the possibility for the existence of
Jahn-Teller (JT) or pseudo Jahn-Teller (PJT) type local distortions in the
La-Ba-Cu-O superconducting system. We performed the calculation and
correspondingly group theory classification of the electronic ground state of
the CuO elongated octahedra cluster, immersed in a background
simulating the superconductor. Part of the motivation to do this study is that
the origin of the apical deformation of the CuO cluster is not
due to a pure JT effect, having therefore a non {\it a priori} condition to
remove the degeneracy of the electronic ground state of the parent regular
octahedron. We present a comparative analysis of the symmetry classified
electron spectrum with previously reported results using unrestricted
Hartree-Fock calculations (UHF). Both the DFT and UHF calculations produced a
non degenerate electronic ground state, not having therefore the necessary
condition for a pure JT effect. However, the appearance of a degenerate E
state near to the highest occupied molecular orbital in the DFT calculation,
suggests the possibility for a PJT effect responsible for a local distortion of
