Long-term stability test of a triple GEM detector
The main aim of the study is to perform the long-term stability test of gain
of the single mask triple GEM detector. A simple method is used for this long-
term stability test using a radioactive X-ray source with high activity. The
test is continued till accumulation of charge per unit area > 12.0 mC/mm2. The
details of the chamber fabrication, the test set-up, the method of measurement

Possible thermochemical disequilibrium in the atmosphere of the exoplanet GJ 436b
The nearby extrasolar planet GJ 436b--which has been labelled as a 'hot
Neptune'--reveals itself by the dimming of light as it crosses in front of and
behind its parent star as seen from Earth. Respectively known as the primary
transit and secondary eclipse, the former constrains the planet's radius and
mass, and the latter constrains the planet's temperature and, with measurements
at multiple wavelengths, its atmospheric composition. Previous work using
transmission spectroscopy failed to detect the 1.4-\mu m water vapour band,
leaving the planet's atmospheric composition poorly constrained. Here we report
the detection of planetary thermal emission from the dayside of GJ 436b at
multiple infrared wavelengths during the secondary eclipse. The best-fit
compositional models contain a high CO abundance and a substantial methane
(CH4) deficiency relative to thermochemical equilibrium models for the
predicted hydrogen-dominated atmosphere. Moreover, we report the presence of
some H2O and traces of CO2. Because CH4 is expected to be the dominant
carbon-bearing species, disequilibrium processes such as vertical mixing and
polymerization of methane into substances such as ethylene may be required to
explain the hot Neptune's small CH4-to-CO ratio, which is at least 10^5 times
smaller than predicted
Dust emission from a parsec-scale structure in the Seyfert 1 nucleus of NGC 4151
We report mid-IR interferometric measurements with \sim 10 mas resolution,
which resolve the warm (T = 285 +25 / -50 K) thermal emission at the center of
NGC 4151. Using pairs of VLT 8.2 m telescopes with MIDI and by comparing the
data to a Gaussian model, we determined the diameter of the dust emission
region, albeit only along one position angle, to be 2.0 +/- 0.4 pc (FWHM). This
is the first size and temperature estimate for the nuclear warm dust
distribution in a Seyfert 1 galaxy. The parameters found are comparable to
those in Seyfert 2 galaxies, thus providing direct support for the unified
model. Using simple analytic temperature distributions, we find that the
mid-infrared emission is probably not the smooth continuation of the hot
nuclear source that is marginally resolved with K band interferometry. We also
detected weak excess emission around 10.5 micron in our shorter baseline
observation, possibly indicating that silicate emission is extended to the

Surface induced disorder in body-centered cubic alloys
We present Monte Carlo simulations of surface induced disordering in a model
of a binary alloy on a bcc lattice which undergoes a first order bulk
transition from the ordered DO3 phase to the disordered A2 phase. The data are
analyzed in terms of an effective interface Hamiltonian for a system with
several order parameters in the framework of the linear renormalization
approach due to Brezin, Halperin and Leibler. We show that the model provides a
good description of the system in the vicinity of the interface. In particular,
we recover the logarithmic divergence of the thickness of the disordered layer
as the bulk transition is approached, we calculate the critical behavior of the
maxima of the layer susceptibilities, and demonstrate that it is in reasonable
agreement with the simulation data. Directly at the (110) surface, the theory
predicts that all order parameters vanish continuously at the surface with a
nonuniversal, but common critical exponent. However, we find different
exponents for the order parameter of the DO3 phase and the order parameter of
the B2 phase. Using the effective interface model, we derive the finite size
scaling function for the surface order parameter and show that the theory
accounts well for the finite size behavior of the DO3 ordering but not for that
of B2 ordering. The situation is even more complicated in the neighborhood of
the (100) surface, due to the presence of an ordering field which couples to

Optimal squeezing, pure states, and amplification of squeezing in resonance fluorescence
It is shown that 100% squeezed output can be produced in the resonance
fluorescence from a coherently driven two-level atom interacting with a
squeezed vacuum. This is only possible for squeezed input, and is
associated with a pure atomic state, i.e., a completely polarized state. The
quadrature for which optimal squeezing occurs depends on the squeezing phase
the Rabi frequency and the atomic detuning . Pure
states are described for arbitrary not just or as in
previous work. For small values of there may be a greater degree of
squeezing in the output field than the input - i.e., we have squeezing

Tales from the playing field: black and minority ethnic students' experiences of physical education teacher education
This article presents findings from recent research exploring black and minority ethnic (BME) students’ experiences of Physical Education teacher education (PETE) in England (Flintoff, 2008). Despite policy initiatives to increase the ethnic diversity of teacher education cohorts, BME students are under-represented in PETE, making up just 2.94% of the 2007/8 national cohort, the year in which this research was conducted. Drawing on in-depth interviews and questionnaires with 25 BME students in PETE, the study sought to contribute to our limited knowledge and understanding of racial and ethnic difference in PE, and to show how ‘race,’ ethnicity and gender are interwoven in individuals’ embodied, everyday experiences of learning how to teach. In the article, two narratives in the form of fictional stories are used to present the findings. I suggest that narratives can be useful for engaging with the experiences of those previously silenced or ignored within Physical Education (PE); they are also designed to provoke an emotional as well as an intellectual response in the reader. Given that teacher education is a place where we should be engaging students, emotionally and politically, to think deeply about teaching, education and social justice and their place within these, I suggest that such stories of difference might have a useful place within a critical PETE pedagogy
