Background: Infertility is a condition with important psychological, economic, demographic and medical implications. Male infertility refers to a male’s inability to result pregnancy in a fertile female. Methods: The present hospital based study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Point Hospital, Bangalore. Duration of the study was for 6 months from October 2015 to March 2016. A total of 250 infertile couples couple coming for evaluation to the outpatient department (OPD) were selected in the study by convenient sampling technique. All infertile couples in the study were preliminarily investigated to rule out male factor in infertility. Semen analysis was done as a primary investigation procedure. Results: The overall prevalence of abnormal sperm count in the present study was found to be 34.4%; of which one fourth had oligospermia, 8.4% had Azoospermia and 1.2% had asthenozoospermia. Study found a significant association between type of occupation, obesity and alcohol addiction with abnormal sperm count. Conclusions: High prevalence of male factor in infertility was noted in the present study. Refraining from addictions, certain life style changes including exercise and timely medical attention can address the issue

Abdominal pregnancy is a rare obstetric complication with high maternal mortality. Advanced abdominal pregnancy is rare and accounts for 1 in 25,000 pregnancies. 32 years’ lady, P2L2, last child birth and interval tubectomy by modified Pomeroy’s method 12 years ago, reported with Amenorrhoea of two months with vague lower abdominal pain since 2 days. Ultrasonography (USG) abdomen and pelvis showed an extrauterine viable pregnancy of 20+ weeks POG with no hemoperitoneum. she travelled 4 hours by road to her hometown, for second opinion and was referred back to our institution. A laparotomy was done; hemoperitoneum of 1.5 litres was noted. The sac with the live foetus inside with placental implantation seen on entire left fallopian tube except the fimbrial end and a small portion of omentum was noted. Left salpingectomy with excision of the sac with the foetus along with partial omentectomy was performed. Patient received two units of PRBC postoperatively

Mineralization of Melanoidin by H₂O₂ Producing Enzymes from Marine Cyanobacteria Oscillatoria boryana BDU 92181

Intracellular enzymes of Oscillatoria boryana BDU 92181 exhibited mineralizing activity on melanoidin, a recalcitrant pigment present in the distillery wastewater. Melanoidin decolourization was postulated to be due to the production of hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen released by the cyanobacterium during photosynthesis. The present study was aimed to find out the efficacy of the marine cyanobacterium O. boryana BDU 92181 in producing H2O2 and enzymes involved in hydrogen peroxide production with a view to utilize its potential for decolorization of melanoidin pigment in the distillery effluent. The enzymes involved in the melanoidin degradation have not so far been attempted with cyanobacteria. The results obtained in the present work suggested the activity of the glucose oxidase and Manganese peroxidase enzymes in a marine cyanobacterium Oscillatoria boryana BDU 92181 and whose activity was found to be enhanced in the presence of melanoidin.</jats:p

Decline of functional competence is one of the markers of old age. Low functional competence imposes not only restrictions in mobility and increases dependency during old age. This study is an attempt to assess the patterns of functional competence in a sample of 300 elderly living in semi urban areas of Chittoor District. Patterns of functional competence were measured through ADL, IADL, PBADL and SPFC. Findings suggest a differential pattern of functional competence across physical and mental activities, social supports, health practices, age, gender and economic groups etc. The outcome of the study highlights the need for rehabilitation services for the need based vulnerable elderly.</jats:p
