Aspects of the analysis of multivariative failure time data
Multivariate failure time data arise in various forms including recurrent event data when individuals are followed to observe the sequence of occurrences of a certain type of event; correlated failure time when an individual is followed for the occurrence of two or more types of events for which the individual is simultaneously at risk, or when distinct individuals have dependent event times; or more complicated multistate processes when individuals may move among a number of discrete states over the course of a follow-up study and the states and associated sojourn times are recorded. Here we provide a critical review of statistical models and data analysis methods for the analysis of recurrent event data and correlated failure time data. This review suggests a valuable role for partially marginalized intensity models for the analysis of recurrent event data, and points to the usefulness of marginal hazard rate models and nonparametric estimates of pairwise dependencies for the analysis of correlated failure times. Areas in need of further methodology development are indicated
Block-Conditional Missing at Random Models for Missing Data
Two major ideas in the analysis of missing data are (a) the EM algorithm
[Dempster, Laird and Rubin, J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 39 (1977) 1--38] for
maximum likelihood (ML) estimation, and (b) the formulation of models for the
joint distribution of the data and missing data indicators , and
associated "missing at random"; (MAR) condition under which a model for
is unnecessary [Rubin, Biometrika 63 (1976) 581--592]. Most previous work has
treated and as single blocks, yielding selection or pattern-mixture
models depending on how their joint distribution is factorized. This paper
explores "block-sequential"; models that interleave subsets of the variables
and their missing data indicators, and then make parameter restrictions based
on assumptions in each block. These include models that are not MAR. We examine
a subclass of block-sequential models we call block-conditional MAR (BCMAR)
models, and an associated block-monotone reduced likelihood strategy that
typically yields consistent estimates by selectively discarding some data.
Alternatively, full ML estimation can often be achieved via the EM algorithm.
We examine in some detail BCMAR models for the case of two multinomially
distributed categorical variables, and a two block structure where the first
block is categorical and the second block arises from a (possibly multivariate)

Decision making in kidney paired donation programs with altruistic donors
In recent years, kidney paired donation has been extended to include living non-directed or altruistic donors, in which an altruistic donor donates to the candidate of an incompatible donor candidate pair with the understanding that the donor in that pair will further donate to the candidate of a second pair, and so on; such a process continues and thus forms an altruistic donor-initiated chain. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to sequentially allocate the altruistic donor (or bridge donor) so as to maximize the expected utility; analogous to the way a computer plays chess, the idea is to evaluate different allocations for each altruistic donor (or bridge donor) by looking several moves ahead in a derived look-ahead search tree. Simulation studies are provided to illustrate and evaluate our proposed method
Non-Coding RNA Sequencing of Equine Endometrium During Maternal Recognition of Pregnancy.
Maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) in the mare is not well defined. In a non-pregnant mare, prostaglandin F2α (PGF) is released on day 14 post-ovulation (PO) to cause luteal regression, resulting in loss of progesterone production. Equine MRP occurs prior to day 14 to halt PGF production. Studies have failed to identify a gene candidate for MRP, so attention has turned to small, non-coding RNAs. The objective of this study was to evaluate small RNA (<200 nucleotides) content in endometrium during MRP. Mares were used in a cross-over design with each having a pregnant and non-mated cycle. Each mare was randomly assigned to collection day 11 or 13 PO (n = 3/day) and endometrial biopsies were obtained. Total RNA was isolated and sequencing libraries were prepared using a small RNA library preparation kit and sequenced on a HiSeq 2000. EquCab3 was used as the reference genome and DESeq2 was used for statistical analysis. On day 11, 419 ncRNAs, representing miRNA, snRNA, snoRNA, scaRNA, and vaultRNA, were different between pregnancy statuses, but none on day 13. Equine endometrial ncRNAs with unknown structure and function were also identified. This study is the first to describe ncRNA transcriptome in equine endometrium. Identifying targets of these ncRNAs could lead to determining MRP
Inconsistency of the MLE for the joint distribution of interval censored survival times and continuous marks
This paper considers the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) for
the joint distribution function of an interval censored survival time and a
continuous mark variable. We provide a new explicit formula for the MLE in this
problem. We use this formula and the mark specific cumulative hazard function
of Huang and Louis (1998) to obtain the almost sure limit of the MLE. This
result leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for consistency of the MLE
which imply that the MLE is inconsistent in general. We show that the
inconsistency can be repaired by discretizing the marks. Our theoretical

Revision rates after primary hip and knee replacement in England between 2003 and 2006
<b>Background</b>:
Hip and knee replacement are some of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the world. Resurfacing of the hip and unicondylar knee replacement are increasingly being used. There is relatively little evidence on their performance. To study performance of joint replacement in England, we investigated revision rates in the first 3 y after hip or knee replacement according to prosthesis type.
<b>Methods and Findings</b>:
We linked records of the National Joint Registry for England and Wales and the Hospital Episode Statistics for patients with a primary hip or knee replacement in the National Health Service in England between April 2003 and September 2006. Hospital Episode Statistics records of succeeding admissions were used to identify revisions for any reason. 76,576 patients with a primary hip replacement and 80,697 with a primary knee replacement were included (51% of all primary hip and knee replacements done in the English National Health Service). In hip patients, 3-y revision rates were 0.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.8%–1.1%) with cemented, 2.0% (1.7%–2.3%) with cementless, 1.5% (1.1%–2.0% CI) with “hybrid” prostheses, and 2.6% (2.1%–3.1%) with hip resurfacing (p < 0.0001). Revision rates after hip resurfacing were increased especially in women. In knee patients, 3-y revision rates were 1.4% (1.2%–1.5% CI) with cemented, 1.5% (1.1%–2.1% CI) with cementless, and 2.8% (1.8%–4.5% CI) with unicondylar prostheses (p < 0.0001). Revision rates after knee replacement strongly decreased with age.
<b>Interpretation</b>:
Overall, about one in 75 patients needed a revision of their prosthesis within 3 y. On the basis of our data, consideration should be given to using hip resurfacing only in male patients and unicondylar knee replacement only in elderly patients
Superluminal neutrinos in long baseline experiments and SN1987a
Precise tests of Lorentz invariance in neutrinos can be performed using long
baseline experiments such as MINOS and OPERA or neutrinos from astrophysical
sources. The MINOS collaboration reported a measurement of the muonic neutrino
velocities that hints to super-luminal propagation, very recently confirmed at
6 sigma by OPERA. We consider a general parametrisation which goes beyond the
usual linear or quadratic violation considered in quantum-gravitational models.
We also propose a toy model showing why Lorentz violation can be specific to
the neutrino sector and give rise to a generic energy behaviour E^alpha, where
alpha is not necessarily an integer number. Supernova bounds and the preferred
MINOS and OPERA regions show a tension, due to the absence of shape distortion
in the neutrino bunch in the far detector of MINOS. The energy independence of

Improved Experimental Limits on the Production of Magnetic Monopoles
We present new limits on low mass accelerator-produced point-like Dirac
magnetic monopoles trapped and bound in matter surrounding the D\O collision
region of the Tevatron at Fermilab (experiment E-882). In the context of a
Drell-Yan mechanism, we obtain cross section limits for the production of
monopoles with magnetic charge values of 1, 2, 3, and 6 times the minimum Dirac
charge of the order of picobarns, some hundred times smaller than found in
similar previous Fermilab searches. Mass limits inferred from these cross

Organizational Mortality of Small Firms: The Effects of Entrepreneurial Age and Human Capital
This paper addresses the issue of internal determination of organizational outcomes. It is argued that in small and simply structured organizations a considerable proportion of the variance in organizational activities and outcomes is associated with individuals. In particular, the paper uses human capital theory to derive hypotheses about individual determinants of organizational mortality. These hypotheses are tested with event-history data of firm registrations and de-registrations in a West German region. The hypotheses are corroborated by the data, but the effects may nonetheless be due to processes linking individual characteristics with organizational performance other than those suggested by the human capital approach
