The elevated Curie temperature and half-metallicity in the ferromagnetic semiconductor LaEuO
Here we study the effect of La doping in EuO thin films using SQUID
magnetometry, muon spin rotation (SR), polarized neutron reflectivity
(PNR), and density functional theory (DFT). The SR data shows that the
LaEuO is homogeneously magnetically ordered up to its
elevated . It is concluded that bound magnetic polaron behavior does
not explain the increase in and an RKKY-like interaction is
consistent with the SR data. The estimation of the magnetic moment by DFT
simulations concurs with the results obtained by PNR, showing a reduction of
the magnetic moment per LaEuO for increasing lanthanum doping.
This reduction of the magnetic moment is explained by the reduction of the
number of Eu-4 electrons present in all the magnetic interactions in EuO
films. Finally, we show that an upwards shift of the Fermi energy with La or Gd
doping gives rise to half-metallicity for doping levels as high as 3.2 %.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure
Carers of forensic mental health in-patients: what factors influence their satisfaction with services?
Background
Families are the main caring resource for service users with severe mental health problems. There has been limited work examining the needs of carers of people using forensic mental health services.
Aims
This study aimed to gain an understanding of carers satisfaction with services in forensic mental health inpatient settings.
Method
A survey design was used with 63 carers interviewed by telephone using a structured interview schedule. The data was analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Results
Most carers were pleased with the service provided although some negative views were expressed with specific types of contact. Giving appropriate information to carers was strongly associated with satisfaction with the service being provided.
Conclusions
Carer satisfaction with forensic mental health services is likely to be higher with services that address carers’ information needs. New ways of providing this information may offer greater opportunities for working with carers

Control of superconductivity with a single ferromagnetic layer in niobium/erbium bilayers
Superconducting spintronics in hybrid superconductor{ferromagnet (S{F) heterostructures provides an exciting potential new class of device. The prototypical super-spintronic device is the superconducting spin-valve, where the critical temperature, Tc, of the S-layer can be controlledby the relative orientation of two (or more) F-layers. Here, we show that such control is also possible in a simple S/F bilayer. Using eld history to set the remanent magnetic state of a thin Er layer, we demonstrate for a Nb/Er bilayer a high level of control of both Tc and the shape of the resistive transition, R(T), to zero resistance. We are able to model the origin of the remanent magnetization, treating it as an increase in the e ective exchange eld of the ferromagnet and link this, using conventional S{F theory, to the suppression of Tc. We observe stepped features in the R(T) which we argue is due to a fundamental interaction of superconductivity with inhomogeneous ferromagnetism, a phenomena currently lacking theoretical description
Influence of the liquid helium meniscus on neutron reflectometry data
Neutron reflectometry offers a unique opportunity for the direct observation of nano-stratification in 3He-4He mixtures in the ultra-low temperature limit. Unfortunately the results of recent experiments could not be well-modelled on account of a seemingly anomalous variation of reflectivity with momentum transfer. We now hypothesize that this effect is attributable to an optical distortion caused by the liquid’s meniscus near the container wall. The validity of this idea is tested and confirmed through a subsidiary experiment on a D2O sample, showing that the meniscus can significantly distort results if the beam size in the horizontal plane is comparable with, or bigger than, the diameter of the container. The meniscus problem can be eliminated if the beam size is substantially smaller than the diameter of the container, such that reflection takes place only from the flat region of the liquid surface thus excluding the meniscus tails. Practical measures for minimising the meniscus distortion effect are discussed
Effectiveness of psychological interventions for carers of patients with severe mental illness (SMI): a systematic review
Objectives
Interventions for carers of patients with severe mental illness (SMI) are effective in improving patient outcomes. This review examined the effectiveness of psychological interventions or support designed to help carers of patients with SMI.
Design
A systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted. Study selection, data abstraction and risk of bias assessments were independently conducted and duplicated. The reporting of this review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.
Data sources
CINAHL, CENTRAL, EMBASE, Medline and PsycINFO were searched from inception to 30 April 2024.
Eligibility criteria
Only studies using an RCT were considered. All other research designs were excluded. The included population was carers over 18 caring for a patient with SMI. Any psychological, psychosocial or psychoeducational interventions were included. Patients under 18, diagnosed with dementia or learning disabilities comorbidity, were excluded.
Data extraction and synthesis
Study characteristics and outcome data (mean and SD) for each included study were collected. Review Manager (RevMan) was used to manage the data. Meta-analysis was not considered appropriate due to the heterogeneity of the included studies. The results were presented as a narrative synthesis.
Results
This review included 3869 participants from 32 RCTs and demonstrated a beneficial effect of psychological interventions for carers. Psychoeducation was widely used and the most evaluated intervention for carers.
Conclusions
Psychological interventions for carers are beneficial in helping to reduce negative outcomes and enhance positive outcomes. Future research could focus on exploring the impact of interventions on less evaluated outcomes such as depressive and anxiety symptoms
Quantitative TEM imaging of the magnetostructural and phase transitions in FeRh thin film systems
Equi-atomic FeRh is a very interesting material as it undergoes a magnetostructural transition from an antiferromagnetic (AF) to a ferromagnetic (FM) phase between 75-105 °C. Its ability to present phase co-existence separated by domain walls (DWs) above room temperature provides immense potential for exploitation of their DW motion in spintronic devices. To be able to effectively control the DWs associated with AF/FM coexistence in FeRh thin films we must fully understand the magnetostructural transition and thermomagnetic behaviour of DWs at a localised scale. Here we present a transmission electron microscopy investigation of the transition in planar FeRh thin-film samples by combining differential phase contrast (DPC) magnetic imaging with in situ heating. We perform quantitative measurements from individual DWs as a function of temperature, showing that FeRh on NiAl exhibits thermomagnetic behaviour consistent with the transition from AF to FM. DPC imaging of an FeRh sample with HF-etched substrate reveals a state of AF/FM co-existence and shows the transition from AF to FM regions proceeds via nucleation of small vortex structures, which then grow by combining with newly nucleated vortex states into larger complex magnetic domains, until it is in a fully-FM state
A pilot trial to assess the effect of a structured COMmunication approach on QUality Of Life in secure mental health settings (Comquol)
Forensic mental health services have largely ignored examining users’ views on the nature of the service offered to them. Priebe and colleagues have developed a structured communication approach placing the service users’ perspective of their care at the heart of the discussions between service users and clinicians. This approach was used as the basis of a pilot study to evaluate a structured six-month approach designed to increase the quality of life of service users in secure settings. The specific objectives of the study were to:
• Establish the feasibility of the trial design as the basis for determining the viability of a large full-scale trial
• Determine the variability of the outcomes of interest
• Estimate the costs of the intervention
• If necessary, to refine the intervention following the study based upon the experiences of the clinicians and service users.
A 36 month pilot trial was undertaken. Participants were recruited from 6 medium secure in–patient services with 55 patients in the intervention group and 57 in the control group as well as 92 nurses (47 in the intervention group and 45 in the control group). The intervention was based on the structured communication approach. Assessments took place prior to the intervention (baseline), at 6 months (post intervention) and at 12 months (follow-up).
A review of the trial design indicated this approach was viable as the basis for a large full-scale trial; no refinements were needed to the intervention. The variability of the outcomes can be used start thinking about how large a full scale trial needs to be. A full trial would be able to estimate the effect of the intervention whereas this small pilot study cannot. The total cost of the intervention was £29,100 (£529 per patient) when assuming the intervention was part of the nurses normal work. Disturbed behaviour was also found to be costly since it was associated with significant use of NHS resources and police
A pilot cluster randomised trial to assess the effect of a structured communication approach on quality of life in secure mental health settings:The Comquol Study
Background: There is a lack of research in forensic settings examining therapeutic relationships. A structured communication approach, placing patients' perspectives at the heart of discussions about their care, was used to improve patients' quality of life in secure settings. The objectives were to: • Establish the feasibility of the trial design • Determine the variability of the outcomes of interest • Estimate the costs of the intervention • If necessary, refine the intervention Methods: A pilot cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted. Data was collected from July 2012 to January 2015 from participants in 6 medium secure in-patient services in London and Southern England. 55 patients and 47 nurses were in the intervention group with 57 patients and 45 nurses in the control group. The intervention comprised 6 nurse-patient meetings over a 6 month period. Patients rated their satisfaction with a range of domains followed by discussions on improving patient identified problems. Assessments took place at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Participants were not blind to their allocated group. The primary outcome was self-reported quality of life collected by a researcher blind to participants' allocation status. Results: The randomisation procedures and intervention approach functioned well. The measures used were understood by the participants and gave relevant outcome information. The response rates were good with low patient withdrawal rates. The quality of life estimated treatment effect was 0.2 (95 % CI: -0.4 to 0.8) at 6 months and 0.4 (95 % CI: -0.3 to 1.1) indicating the likely extreme boundaries of effect in the main trial. The estimated treatment effect of the primary outcome is clinically important, and a positive effect of the intervention is not ruled out. The estimate of the ICC for the primary outcome at 6 and 12 months was 0.04 (0.00 to 0.17) and 0.05 (0.00 to 0.18). The cost of the intervention was £529 per patient. Conclusions: The trial design was viable as the basis for a full-scale trial. A full trial is justified to estimate the effect of the intervention with greater certainty. The variability of the outcomes could be used to calculate numbers needed for a full-scale trial. Ratings of need for therapeutic security may be useful in any future study.
