Preserving Value in the Post-BAPCPA Era — An Empirical Study
Through the use of a multivariate regression model, this article studies the effect on debtor reorganization values of the shortened reorganization timeframe imposed by the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (“BAPCPA”). The study shows that BAPCPA is positively correlated at a statistically significant level with higher reorganization recoveries. This result is attributed to the increased proportion of prepackaged and prenegotiated bankruptcies observed in the post-2005 era, as these “fast-track” bankruptcy cases entail lower costs and better preserve the firm’s value

Perturbations in neuroinflammatory pathways are associated with paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy in breast cancer survivors.
Paclitaxel is a common chemotherapy drug associated with the development of chronic paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy (PIPN). PIPN is associated with neuroinflammatory mechanisms in pre-clinical studies. Here, we evaluated for differential gene expression (DGE) in peripheral blood between breast cancer survivors with and without PIPN and for neuroinflammatory (NI) related signaling pathways and whole-transcriptome profiles from other experiments. Pathway impact analysis identified 8 perturbed NI related pathways. Expression profile analysis found 15 experiments having similar whole-transcriptome profiles of DGE related to neuroinflammation and PIPN. These findings suggest that perturbations in pathways associated with neuroinflammation are found in cancer survivors with PIPN
Eta Carinae across the 2003.5 Minimum: Analysis in the visible and near infrared spectral region
We present an analysis of the visible through near infrared spectrum of Eta
Carinae and its ejecta obtained during the "Eta Carinae Campaign with the UVES
at the ESO VLT". This is a part of larger effort to present a complete Eta
Carinae spectrum, and extends the previously presented analyses with the
HST/STIS in the UV (1240-3159 A) to 10,430 A. The spectrum in the mid and near
UV is characterized by the ejecta absorption. At longer wavelengths, stellar
wind features from the central source and narrow emission lines from the
Weigelt condensations dominate the spectrum. However, narrow absorption lines
from the circumstellar shells are present. This paper provides a description of
the spectrum between 3060 and 10,430 A, including line identifications of the
ejecta absorption spectrum, the emission spectrum from the Weigelt
condensations and the P-Cygni stellar wind features. The high spectral
resolving power of VLT/UVES enables equivalent width measurements of atomic and
molecular absorption lines for elements with no transitions at the shorter
wavelengths. However, the ground based seeing and contributions of nebular
scattered radiation prevent direct comparison of measured equivalent widths in
the VLT/UVES and HST/STIS spectra. Fortunately, HST/STIS and VLT/UVES have a
small overlap in wavelength coverage which allows us to compare and adjust for
the difference in scattered radiation entering the instruments' apertures. This
paper provides a complete online VLT/UVES spectrum with line identifications
and a spectral comparison between HST/STIS and VLT/UVES between 3060 and 3160

Geometry-dependent critical currents in superconducting nanocircuits
In this paper we calculate the critical currents in thin superconducting
strips with sharp right-angle turns, 180-degree turnarounds, and more
complicated geometries, where all the line widths are much smaller than the
Pearl length . We define the critical current as the
current that reduces the Gibbs free-energy barrier to zero. We show that
current crowding, which occurs whenever the current rounds a sharp turn, tends
to reduce the critical current, but we also show that when the radius of
curvature is less than the coherence length this effect is partially
compensated by a radius-of-curvature effect. We propose several patterns with
rounded corners to avoid critical-current reduction due to current crowding.
These results are relevant to superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors,
where they suggest a means of improving the bias conditions and reducing dark
counts. These results also have relevance to normal-metal nanocircuits, as
these patterns can reduce the electrical resistance, electromigration, and hot
spots caused by nonuniform heating.Comment: 29 pages, 24 figure
Risk Factors for High Early Mortality in Patients on Antiretroviral Treatment in a Rural District of Malawi.
OBJECTIVES: Among adults started on antiretroviral treatment (ART) in a rural district hospital (a) to determine the cumulative proportion of deaths that occur within 3 and 6 months of starting ART, and (b) to identify risk factors that may be associated with such mortality. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional analytical study set in Thyolo district, Malawi. METHODS: Over a 2-year period (April 2003 to April 2005) mortality within the first 3 and 6 months of starting ART was determined and risk factors were examined. RESULTS: A total of 1507 individuals (517 men and 990 women), whose median age was 35 years were included in the study. There were a total of 190 (12.6%) deaths on ART of which 116 (61%) occurred within the first 3 months (very early mortality) and 150 (79%) during the first 6 months of initiating ART. Significant risk factors associated with such mortality included WHO stage IV disease, a baseline CD4 cell count under 50 cells/mul and increasing grades of malnutrition. A linear trend in mortality was observed with increasing grades of malnutrition (chi for trend = 96.1, P </= 0.001) and decreasing CD4 cell counts (chi for trend = 72.4, P </= 0.001). Individuals who were severely malnourished [body mass index (BMI) < 16.0 kg/m] had a six times higher risk of dying in the first 3 months than those with a normal nutritional status. CONCLUSIONS: Among individuals starting ART, the BMI and clinical staging could be important screening tools for use to identify and target individuals who, despite ART, are still at a high risk of early death
High precision measurement of the associated strangeness production in proton proton interactions
A new high precision measurement of the reaction pp -> pK+Lambda at a beam
momentum of 2.95 GeV/c with more than 200,000 analyzed events allows a detailed
analysis of differential observables and their inter-dependencies. Correlations
of the angular distributions with momenta are examined. The invariant mass
distributions are compared for different regions in the Dalitz plots. The cusp
structure at the N Sigma threshold is described with the Flatt\'e formalism and

Video enhancement using adaptive spatio-temporal connective filter and piecewise mapping
This paper presents a novel video enhancement system based on an adaptive spatio-temporal connective (ASTC) noise filter and an adaptive piecewise mapping function (APMF). For ill-exposed videos or those with much noise, we first introduce a novel local image statistic to identify impulse noise pixels, and then incorporate it into the classical bilateral filter to form ASTC, aiming to reduce the mixture of the most two common types of noises - Gaussian and impulse noises in spatial and temporal directions. After noise removal, we enhance the video contrast with APMF based on the statistical information of frame segmentation results. The experiment results demonstrate that, for diverse low-quality videos corrupted by mixed noise, underexposure, overexposure, or any mixture of the above, the proposed system can automatically produce satisfactory results
Effect of molecular and electronic structure on the light harvesting properties of dye sensitizers
The systematic trends in structural and electronic properties of perylene
diimide (PDI) derived dye molecules have been investigated by DFT calculations
based on projector augmented wave (PAW) method including gradient corrected
exchange-correlation effects. TDDFT calculations have been performed to study
the visible absorbance activity of these complexes. The effect of different
ligands and halogen atoms attached to PDI were studied to characterize the
light harvesting properties. The atomic size and electronegativity of the
halogen were observed to alter the relaxed molecular geometries which in turn
influenced the electronic behavior of the dye molecules. Ground state molecular
structure of isolated dye molecules studied in this work depends on both the
halogen atom and the carboxylic acid groups. DFT calculations revealed that the
carboxylic acid ligands did not play an important role in changing the
HOMO-LUMO gap of the sensitizer. However, they serve as anchor between the PDI
and substrate titania surface of the solar cell or photocatalyst. A
commercially available dye-sensitizer, ruthenium bipyridine (RuBpy), was also
studied for electronic and structural properties in order to make a comparison
with PDI derivatives for light harvesting properties. Results of this work
suggest that fluorinated, chlorinated, brominated, and iyodinated PDI compounds
can be useful as sensitizers in solar cells and in artificial photosynthesis.Comment: Single pdf file, 14 pages with 7 figures and 4 table
Activation of PKA leads to mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition and loss of tumor-initiating ability
The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition enables carcinoma cells to acquire malignancy-associated traits and the properties of tumor-initiating cells (TICs). TICs have emerged in recent years as important targets for cancer therapy, owing to their ability to drive clinical relapse and enable metastasis. Here, we propose a strategy to eliminate mesenchymal TICs by inducing their conversion to more epithelial counterparts that have lost tumor-initiating ability. We report that increases in intracellular levels of the second messenger, adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate, and the subsequent activation of protein kinase A (PKA) induce a mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET) in mesenchymal human mammary epithelial cells. PKA activation triggers epigenetic reprogramming of TICs by the histone demethylase PHF2, which promotes their differentiation and loss of tumor-initiating ability. This study provides proof-of-principle for inducing an MET as differentiation therapy for TICs and uncovers a role for PKA in enforcing and maintaining the epithelial state
