    Two-leg three-phase inverter control for STATCOM and SSSC applications

    Flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices are attracting an increasing interest both in power system academic research and in electric utilities for their capabilities to improve steady-state performance as well as system stability. Several converter topologies for FACTS applications have been proposed in the recent literature, even if those based upon voltage source inverters (VSI) seem to be more attractive due to their intrinsic capability to rapidly respond to network changes such as perturbations subsequent to a fault and their property of being immune to resonance problem. In this paper, a new topology for inverter-based FACTS is proposed. This configuration, employing a two-leg three-phase inverter is employed for both series and parallel-connected reactive power compensators. The converter utilizes a modular topology for allowing a satisfaction of electronic components rating. A control strategy based on variable structure control technique with sliding mode is employed to track appropriate reference quantities. Design and control, as well as good tracking performances, are also verified through numerical simulations

    A Probabilistic Approach for the Optimal Sizing of Storage Devices to Increase the Penetration of Plug-in Electric Vehicles in Direct Current Networks

    The growing diffusion of electric vehicles connected to distribution networks for charging purposes is an ongoing problem that utilities must deal with. Direct current networks and storage devices have emerged as a feasible means of satisfying the expected increases in the numbers of vehicles while preserving the effective operation of the network. In this paper, an innovative probabilistic methodology is proposed for the optimal sizing of electrical storage devices with the aim of maximizing the penetration of plug-in electric vehicles while preserving efficient and effective operation of the network. The proposed methodology is based on an analytical solution of the problem concerning the power losses minimization in distribution networks equipped with storage devices. The closed-form expression that was obtained is included in a Monte Carlo simulation procedure aimed at handling the uncertainties in loads and renewable generation units. The results of several numerical applications are reported and discussed to demonstrate the validity of the proposed solution. Also, different penetration levels of generation units were analyzed in order to focus on the importance of renewable generation

This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.There is strong research evidence showing that people naturally align to each other’s vocabulary, sentence structure, and acoustic features in dialog, yet little is known about how the alignment mechanism operates in the interaction between users and computer systems let alone how it may be exploited to improve the efficiency of the interaction. This article provides an account of lexical alignment in human–computer dialogs, based on empirical data collected in a simulated human–computer interaction scenario. The results indicate that alignment is present, resulting in the gradual reduction and stabilization of the vocabulary-in-use, and that it is also reciprocal. Further, the results suggest that when system and user errors occur, the development of alignment is temporarily disrupted and users tend to introduce novel words to the dialog. The results also indicate that alignment in human–computer interaction may have a strong strategic component and is used as a resource to compensate for less optimal (visually impoverished) interaction conditions. Moreover, lower alignment is associated with less successful interaction, as measured by user perceptions. The article distills the results of the study into design recommendations for human–computer dialog systems and uses them to outline a model of dialog management that supports and exploits alignment through mechanisms for in-use adaptation of the system’s grammar and lexicon

    Plasma deoxysphingolipids: a novel class of biomarkers for the metabolic syndrome?

    Aims/hypothesis: Sphingolipid synthesis is typically initiated by the conjugation of l-serine and palmitoyl-CoA, a reaction catalysed by serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT). SPT can also metabolise other acyl-CoAs (C12 to C18) and other amino acids such as l-alanine and glycine, giving rise to a spectrum of atypical sphingolipids. Here, we aimed to identify changes in plasma levels of these atypical sphingolipids to explore their potential as biomarkers in the metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Methods: We compared the plasma profiles of ten sphingoid bases in healthy individuals with those of patients with the metabolic syndrome but not diabetes, and diabetic patients (n = 25 per group). The results were verified in a streptozotocin (STZ) rat model. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were used. Results: Deoxysphingolipids (dSLs) were significantly elevated ( p=5×106 p = {5} \times {1}{0^{{ - {6}}}} ) in patients with the metabolic syndrome (0.11 ± 0.04μmol/l) compared with controls (0.06 ± 0.02μmol/l) but did not differ between the metabolic syndrome and diabetes groups. Levels of C16-sphingosine-based sphingolipids were significantly lowered in diabetic patients but not in patients with the metabolic syndrome but without diabetes (p = 0.008). Significantly elevated dSL levels were also found in the plasma and liver of STZ rats. A principal component analysis revealed a similar or even closer association of dSLs with diabetes and the metabolic syndrome in comparison with the established biomarkers. Conclusions/interpretation: We showed that dSLs are significantly elevated in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and non-diabetic metabolic syndrome compared with healthy controls. They may, therefore, be useful novel biomarkers to improve risk prediction and therapy monitoring in these patient

    Computation of multiple series compensations using the compensation theorem

    This paper deals with the simultaneous calculation of the series compensation degrees of multiple lines in a transmission grid, in order to achieve the desired active power flows in the compensated lines, using an analytical approach based on the compensation theorem. The paper extends to the case of multiple compensated lines the methodological approach already proposed by the authors for a single compensated line. The mathematical basis beneath the proposed method is first presented and later the method is applied and validated using two test networks. The first network is a 10 buses, 14 lines customization of a portion of an existing 400 kV – 50 Hz transmission network. The second network represents a 400 kV – 50 Hz large real network consisting of 78 nodes and 109 overhead lines for a total extension of 10,900 km, including 17 series-compensated lines. The results show the robustness and accuracy of the analytical method proposed, which has the advantage to be simpler than the classical approach based on power flow procedures. Accordingly, the novel method proposed proves to be an interesting alternative to the classical calculation procedures

    Procedure for short-lived particle detection in the OPERA experiment and its application to charm decays

    The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of νμντ\nu_\mu \rightarrow \nu_\tau oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the τ\tau leptons produced in ντ\nu_\tau charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect τ\tau particle decays, occurring over distances of the order of 1 mm from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail. The results of its application to the search for charmed hadrons are then presented as a validation of the methods for ντ\nu_\tau appearance detection

    Cytotoxic lymphocytes in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia

    The occurrence of cytotoxic lymphocyte subpopulations (i.e., CD 16+, CD57+ and cytotoxic CD 8+) was studied in the peripheral blood of 18 B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) patients. The absolute numbers of CD 57+, CD 16+ and cytotoxic CD 8+ lymphocytes were increased in the peripheral blood of untreated patients as compared with healthy donors, suggesting a causal relation with the accumulation of malignant B-cells. For 5 B-CLL patients and 5 hematological normal donors, the lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood, lymph nodes and bone marrow were determined. A significant immune response was observed in the lymph nodes of the patients, as reflected by the CD 3+ lymphocytes, which were 1.7–27 times larger in the patients lymph nodes than in their peripheral blood and bone marrow. In contrast, with peripheral blood this was mainly caused by an increase in CD 4+ lymphocytes. The CD 57 lymphocytes in the lymph nodes of the patients had abnormal orthogonal light-scattering signals and an abnormal density of CD 57+ receptors in comparison with their peripheral blood CD 57+ lymphocytes or the CD57+ lymphocytes in the peripheral blood, bone marrow and tonsils of the hematological normal donors. This study shows that although a significant increase of cytotoxic lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of B-CLL patients is observed, the actual distributions of the non-malignant lymphocytes can be quite different at the actual tumor sites, i.e., bone marrow and lymph node

    A facility to Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) at the CERN SPS

    A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden particles are predicted by a large number of models beyond the Standard Model. The high intensity of the SPS 400~GeV beam allows probing a wide variety of models containing light long-lived exotic particles with masses below O{\cal O}(10)~GeV/c2^2, including very weakly interacting low-energy SUSY states. The experimental programme of the proposed facility is capable of being extended in the future, e.g. to include direct searches for Dark Matter and Lepton Flavour Violation.Comment: Technical Proposa

    Determination of the muon charge sign with the dipolar spectrometers of the OPERA experiment

    The OPERA long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment has observed the direct appearance of ντ\nu_\tau in the CNGS νμ\nu_\mu beam. Two large muon magnetic spectrometers are used to identify muons produced in the τ\tau leptonic decay and in νμCC\nu_\mu^{CC} interactions by measuring their charge and momentum. Besides the kinematic analysis of the τ\tau decays, background resulting from the decay of charmed particles produced in νμCC\nu_\mu^{CC} interactions is reduced by efficiently identifying the muon track. A new method for the charge sign determination has been applied, via a weighted angular matching of the straight track-segments reconstructed in the different parts of the dipole magnets. Results obtained for Monte Carlo and real data are presented.
