Bayesian Non-Exhaustive Classification A Case Study: Online Name Disambiguation using Temporal Record Streams

    Get PDF
The name entity disambiguation task aims to partition the records of multiple real-life persons so that each partition contains records pertaining to a unique person. Most of the existing solutions for this task operate in a batch mode, where all records to be disambiguated are initially available to the algorithm. However, more realistic settings require that the name disambiguation task be performed in an online fashion, in addition to, being able to identify records of new ambiguous entities having no preexisting records. In this work, we propose a Bayesian non-exhaustive classification framework for solving online name disambiguation task. Our proposed method uses a Dirichlet process prior with a Normal * Normal * Inverse Wishart data model which enables identification of new ambiguous entities who have no records in the training data. For online classification, we use one sweep Gibbs sampler which is very efficient and effective. As a case study we consider bibliographic data in a temporal stream format and disambiguate authors by partitioning their papers into homogeneous groups. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is better than existing methods for performing online name disambiguation task.Comment: to appear in CIKM 201

First and Second Sound Modes of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Harmonic Trap

We have calculated the first and second sound modes of a dilute interacting Bose gas in a spherical trap for temperatures (0.6<T/Tc<1.20.6<T/T_{c}<1.2) and for systems with 10410^4 to 10810^8 particles. The second sound modes (which exist only below TcT_{c}) generally have a stronger temperature dependence than the first sound modes. The puzzling temperature variations of the sound modes near TcT_{c} recently observed at JILA in systems with 10310^3 particles match surprisingly well with those of the first and second sound modes of much larger systems.Comment: a shorten version, more discussions are given on the nature of the second sound. A long footnote on the recent work of Zaremba, Griffin, and Nikuni (cond-mat/9705134) is added, the spectrum of the (\ell=1, n_2=0) mode is included in fig.

The Ground State of the Pseudogap in Cuprate Superconductors

We present studies of the electronic structure of La2-xBaxCuO4, a system where the superconductivity is strongly suppressed as static spin and charge orders or "stripes" develop near the doping level of x=1/8. Using angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy, we detect an energy gap at the Fermi surface with magnitude consistent with d-wave symmetry and with linear density of states, vanishing only at four nodal points, even when superconductivity disappears at x=1/8. Thus, the non-superconducting, "striped" state at x=1/8 is consistent with a phase incoherent d-wave superconductor whose Cooper pairs form spin/charge ordered structures instead of becoming superconducting.Comment: This is the author's version of the wor

Extended H? emission line sources from UWISH2

We present the extended source catalogue for the UKIRT Wide Field Infrared Survey for H2 (UWISH2). The survey is unbiased along the inner Galactic Plane from l ? 357° to l ? 65° and |b| ? 1.5° and covers 209 deg2. A further 42.0 and 35.5 deg2 of high dust column density regions have been targeted in Cygnus and Auriga. We have identified 33 200 individual extended H2 features. They have been classified to be associated with about 700 groups of jets and outflows, 284 individual (candidate) planetary nebulae, 30 supernova remnants and about 1300 photodissociation regions. We find a clear decline of star formation activity (traced by H2 emission from jets and photodissociation regions) with increasing distance from the Galactic Centre. About 60 per cent of the detected candidate planetary nebulae have no known counterpart and 25 per cent of all supernova remnants have detectable H2 emission associated with them

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Atoms in a Trap

We point out that the local density approximation (LDA) of Oliva is an adaptation of the Thomas-Fermi method, and is a good approximation when ε=ω/kT0\varepsilon = \hbar\omega/kT 0, the LDA leads to a quantitative result (14') easily checked by experiments. Critical remarks are made about the physics of the many body problem in terms of the scattering length aa.Comment: 9 pages, latex. one figure, available from author

Imaginary Squashing Mode Spectroscopy of Helium Three B

We have made precision measurements of the frequency of a collective mode of the superfluid 3He-B order parameter, the J=2- imaginary squashing mode. Measurements were performed at multiple pressures using interference of transverse sound in an acoustic cavity. Transverse waves propagate in the vicinity of this order parameter mode owing to off-resonant coupling. At the crossing of the sound mode and the order parameter mode, the sound wave is strongly attenuated. We use both velocity and attenuation measurements to determine precise values of the mode frequency with a resolution between 0.1% and 0.25%.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to proceedings of Quantum Fluids and Solids (QFS) Conference 2006; revised 9/26/0

    S1×S2S^1 \times S^2 wormholes and topological charge

I investigate solutions to the Euclidean Einstein-matter field equations with topology S1×S2×RS^1 \times S^2 \times R in a theory with a massless periodic scalar field and electromagnetism. These solutions carry winding number of the periodic scalar as well as magnetic flux. They induce violations of a quasi-topological conservation law which conserves the product of magnetic flux and winding number on the background spacetime. I extend these solutions to a model with stable loops of superconducting cosmic string, and interpret them as contributing to the decay of such loops.Comment: 18 pages (includes 6 figs.), harvmac and epsf, CU-TP-62
