    We investigate the thermodynamical content of a cellular model which describes nuclear fragmentation as a process taking place in an excited disordered system.     Benchmarking of 3D space charge codes using direct phase space measurements from photoemission high voltage DC gun

    We present a comparison between space charge calculations and direct measurements of the transverse phase space for space charge dominated electron bunches after a high voltage photoemission DC gun followed by an emittance compensation solenoid magnet. The measurements were performed using a double-slit setup for a set of parameters such as charge per bunch and the solenoid current. The data is compared with detailed simulations using 3D space charge codes GPT and Parmela3D with initial particle distributions created from the measured transverse and temporal laser profiles. Beam brightness as a function of beam fraction is calculated for the measured phase space maps and found to approach the theoretical maximum set by the thermal energy and accelerating field at the photocathode.Comment: 11 pages, 23 figures. submitted to Phys Rev ST-A

    Allogeneic Stem Cells Alter Gene Expression and Improve Healing of Distal Limb Wounds in Horses.

    Distal extremity wounds are a significant clinical problem in horses and humans and may benefit from mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy. This study evaluated the effects of direct wound treatment with allogeneic stem cells, in terms of gross, histologic, and transcriptional features of healing. Three full-thickness cutaneous wounds were created on each distal forelimb in six healthy horses, for a total of six wounds per horse. Umbilical cord-blood derived equine MSCs were applied to each wound 1 day after wound creation, in one of four forms: (a) normoxic- or (b) hypoxic-preconditioned cells injected into wound margins, or (c) normoxic- or (d) hypoxic-preconditioned cells embedded in an autologous fibrin gel and applied topically to the wound bed. Controls were one blank (saline) injected wound and one blank fibrin gel-treated wound per horse. Data were collected weekly for 6 weeks and included wound surface area, thermography, gene expression, and histologic scoring. Results indicated that MSC treatment by either delivery method was safe and improved histologic outcomes and wound area. Hypoxic-preconditioning did not offer an advantage. MSC treatment by injection resulted in statistically significant increases in transforming growth factor beta and cyclooxygenase-2 expression at week 1. Histologically, significantly more MSC-treated wounds were categorized as pro-healing than pro-inflammatory. Wound area was significantly affected by treatment: MSC-injected wounds were consistently smaller than gel-treated or control wounds. In conclusion, MSC therapy shows promise for distal extremity wounds in horses, particularly when applied by direct injection into the wound margin. Stem Cells Translational Medicine 2018;7:98-108

    Equation of state and phase transitions in asymmetric nuclear matter

    The structure of the 3-dimension pressure-temperature-asymmetry surface of equilibrium of the asymmetric nuclear matter is studied within the thermal Thomas-Fermi approximation. Special attention is paid to the difference of the asymmetry parameter between the boiling sheet and that of the condensation sheet of the surface of equilibrium. We derive the condition of existence of the regime of retrograde condensation at the boiling of the asymmetric nuclear matter. We have performed calculations of the caloric curves in the case of isobaric heating. We have shown the presence of the plateau region in caloric curves at the isobaric heating of the asymmetric nuclear matter. The shape of the caloric curve depends on the pressure and is sensitive to the value of the asymmetry parameter. We point out that the experimental value of the plateau temperature T \approx 7 MeV corresponds to the pressure P = 0.01 MeV/fm^3 at the isobaric boiling.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys.     Photoinjector-generation of a flat electron beam with transverse emittance ratio of 100

    The generation of a flat electron beam directly from a photoinjector is an attractive alternative to the electron damping ring as envisioned for linear colliders. It also has potential applications to light sources such as the generation of ultra-short x-ray pulses or Smith-Purcell free electron lasers. In this Letter, we report on the experimental generation of a flat-beam with a measured transverse emittance ratio of 100±20.2100\pm 20.2 for a bunch charge of 0.5\sim 0.5 nC; the smaller measured normalized root-mean-square emittance is 0.4\sim 0.4 μ\mum and is limited by the resolution of our experimental setup. The experimental data, obtained at the Fermilab/NICADD Photoinjector Laboratory, are compared with numerical simulations and the expected scaling laws.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    The CORALIE survey for southern extra-solar planets XV. Discovery of two eccentric planets orbiting HD4113 and HD156846

    We report the detection of two very eccentric planets orbiting HD4113 and HD156846 with the CORALIE Echelle spectrograph mounted on the 1.2-m Euler Swiss telescope at La Silla. The first planet, HD4113b, has minimum mass of msini=1.6±0.2MJupm\sin{i}=1.6\pm0.2 M_{\rm Jup}, a period of P=526.59±0.21P=526.59\pm0.21 days and an eccentricity of e=0.903±0.02e=0.903\pm0.02. It orbits a metal rich G5V star at a=1.28a=1.28 AU which displays an additional radial velocity drift of 28 m s1^{-1}/yr observed during 8 years. The combination of the radial-velocity data and the non-detection of any main sequence stellar companion in our high contrast images taken at the VLT with NACO/SDI, characterizes the companion as a probable brown dwarf or as a faint white dwarf. The second planet, \object{HD 156846 b}, has minimum mass of msini=10.45±0.05m\sin{i}=10.45\pm0.05 MJup_{\rm Jup}, a period of P=359.51±0.09P=359.51\pm0.09 days, an eccentricity of e=0.847±0.002e=0.847\pm0.002 and is located at a=1.0a=1.0 AU from its parent star. HD156846 is a metal rich G0 dwarf and is also the primary of a wide binary system (a>250a>250 AU, P>4000P>4000 years). Its stellar companion, \object{IDS 17147-1914 B}, is a M4 dwarf. The very high eccentricities of both planets can be explained by Kozai oscillations induced by the presence of a third object.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, A&A Letter accepte

    A spectroscopic study of the blue stragglers in M67

    Based on spectrophotometric observations from the Guillermo Haro Observatory (Cananea, Mexico), a study of the spectral properties of the complete sample of 24 blue straggler stars (BSs) in the old Galactic open cluster M67 (NGC 2682) is presented. All spectra, calibrated using spectral standards, were recalibrated by means of photometric magnitudes in the Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut system, which includes fluxes in 11 bands covering ~3500-10000 A. The set of parameters was obtained using two complementary approaches that rely on a comparison of the spectra with (i) an empirical sample of stars with well-established spectral types and (ii) a theoretical grid of optical spectra computed at both low and high resolution. The overall results indicate that the BSs in M67 span a wide range in Teff(~ 5600 -12600 K) and surface gravities that are fully compatible with those expected for main-sequence objects (log g = 3.5 -5.0 dex).Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, published in MNRAS (2008, Volume 390, Issue 2, pp. 665-674
